RIDGEVILLE — The Highway Patrol shut down a stretch of westbound Interstate 26 in Berkeley County after a tractor-trailer caught fire this morning.
Troopers responded to the Columbia-bound lanes near Ridgeville at 7:06 a.m., a Highway Patrol Web site reported.
Hazardous materials teams were on scene to inspect the truck and make sure the truck did not pose any danger, Lance Cpl. Bob Beres said. Until they cleared the truck, traffic was being re-routed onto U.S. Highway 78 at exit 194. From U.S. 78, the detour was taking traffic to S.C. Highway 27 and back to the freeway at mile marker 187.
Eastbound traffic was flowing normally.
