Fires damage house, ship

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Separate fires damaged a North Charleston house and a government ship in the early hours Tuesday but left no injuries, firefighters said.

Crews spent about 10 minutes bringing flames under control at 2632 Dellwood Drive in the Brentwood subdivision after being dispatched at 12:17 a.m., said Bianca Sancic, a public information officer for the North Charleston Fire Department. Flames burned a carport. Smoke and heat also damaged the inside of the home.

The cause was under investigation. The house appeared repairable, Sancic said.

At 3:08 a.m., crews went to Pier P on the former Charleston Naval Base for an electrical fire on a vessel belonging to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Sancic said. Though the fire was contained in a few minutes, about $25,000 in electronics was damaged, she said.
