Princeton band 'humor' deserved to be booed
Video posted on YouTube confirms that it was impossible to hear the Princeton "scramble" band's performance on Saturday at Johnson Hagood Stadium. The band was drowned out by boos and chants of "Go home, Princeton!" from Citadel cadets.
And rightly so, it turns out.
Diligent research by The Post and Courier has uncovered the script used by the band Saturday (it was on the Princeton band's Web site).
Some highlights of Princeton's "humor" follow:
"There are some things we've done during our time in Charleston that we're sure you just won't tolerate:
--We replaced you drill rifles with Nerf guns.
--We introduced your pipe band to a new kind of pipe.
--And now we're going to Double-Double Rotating P on your field!"
But wait, it gets better (we mean, worse):
"While wandering through your campus today, we couldn't help but notice a few glaring differences between our schools. For example:
--At The Citadel, a tour involves one hour of forced marching; at Princeton, it involves enjoying beverages at every eating club.
--Princeton and The Citadel are both in the United States — but only one of them by choice.
--Your targets are silhouettes; ours are places we buy our shower caddies.
--At Princeton, we study abroad to learn a foreign language and experience a new culture; at The Citadel, you study a broad because you rarely see one on campus."
Who wrote these jokes, Carrot Top?
Learning experience
Citadel president Lt. Gen. John Rosa called Saturday's clash between the Princeton University band and Citadel cadets a "learning experience" for the military school.
An on-campus incident between the band, noted for its irreverent antics, and cadets before Saturday's game against Princeton has led to allegations of abuse and headlines in New Jersey newspapers.
A story in The Daily Princetonian, Princteon's student newspaper, reported that band members said they were "physically attacked and spit upon," and that one band member had an instrument broken.
One student was quoted as saying he was tackled by "three or four cadets" and pushed up against a tree. Senior Citadel cadets helped quell the disturbance and escorted the band before and after the game. .
In a statement released Monday, Rosa described the pre-game incident as a "brief but heated exchange."
"Developing principled leaders is our top priority at The Citadel," Rosa said in his statement. "This weekend has provided our cadets with an object lesson in the responsibility that leaders bear to demonstrate exemplary behavior. On Saturday, a brief but heated exchange between cadets and the Princeton 'scramble band' on our campus prefaced a halftime performance that was drowned out by booing and spirited chants by the Corps.
"As a former cadet I can certainly appreciate the enthusiasm with which the Corps responded to the Princeton band," Rosa said. "And I am proud of the command taken by senior cadets in responding to the situation that morning and in escorting the band to its bus after the game. However, if we are dedicated to the values of The Citadel, we must hold cadets to a higher standard.
"We will use this episode as a learning experience to reinforce with cadets that they are representatives of The Citadel, and that their behavior redounds to the reputation of the college. This lesson is vitally important because, after graduation, their actions will reflect on the military or civilian endeavors with which they will be associated."
The Citadel will play at Princeton next season.

So, Princeton....a guest....thinks it's OK to insult their hosts? And when they get a little push back...they start whining? Maybe they need to either: a) learn some manners, or b) learn to take it if they're going to dish it out. They need to get outside their conference a little more, it's a big, bad world outside those ivy covered walls....

None of the quotes from their show that are included in this article are offensive whatsoever. Why did they deserve to be so contemptuously booed for the whole show?
Additionally, just because a few individuals may not find certain material funny, does not mean that it is objectively unfunny, nor does it mean that other people in the audience won't find it funny. The audience should have had the opportunity to enjoy the show in its entirety and determine for themselves whether or not it was funny and/or offensive.

I truly hope that Gen Rosa is leading from the front next year when our band plays at PU. Gen Rosa is responsible for allowing these clowns to march on campus. At any military base, these antics would not be tollerated. If it is true that Rosa and the administration knew and approved the PU halftime display, they owe the public an apology. The NCAA should review tapes of the show. Athletic events should be a place welcome for all people. Parents with children present had some explaining to do. What say you Gen Rosa? What say you administation? Now ask for my check!

HAhaha, the mighty Citadel won't let this go. Pushed around, goaded and the band of bumbling idiots from Princeton elicit the responses they expected from the "Corps" of wannabes. Looks like some fragile egos got bruised and battered. Big tough guys. Hahahaa
Gen Rosa after all got his Masters attending college in San Francisco. Damn liberal.
If that exhaustive research done by the P&C were the words that so gravely offended our honor suhr, than I think some should folks pull the ramrod out of their neither regions and really get a sense of humor. Those childish jokes were lame but it apparently doesn't take much to get one of those Citadel folks fired up. Sheesh.
Like I said. let it go, you're just continuing the joke without them doing anything. People are laughing at you.
Yep it's a big bad world outside the gates too. Looks like the P&C and the Citadel proved their point.
Gen Rosa is an AF general. The Air Force is more likely to think outside the box and be open to new ideas, like thinking.

I find it funny that the cadets' feelings were hurt by the Princeton band. If "nerf gun" upsets you that much, i'd hate for you to find out some of the names people outside The Citadel call you. Good job on fighting a band full of nerds, whats next? A boyscout troop, the senior citizens volleyball team, or perhaps the school for the deaf and blind disrespected you and want to fight them?
You gave them permission, then tried to fight them and then apologized afterwards. What a bunch of gut-less cowards.

We appreciate your support and patriotism. I would like to personally thank you all for being part of the status quo that continually defames my Alma Mater and its Traditions. I'm sure these same Cadets will be thinking of you all when the "few" of them that SOSblows claims go over seas to fight your war, and possibly even die there. Thats right YOUR WAR you ungrateful, pathetic group of half-as s Americans. Oh I forgot, you guys probably comprise the soft, liberal group of "new age thinking" that does not believe in War. Let me guess; Mommy told you to keep your hands to yourself and never play with guns. Now you grow up talking about your feelings to other people hidden behind a clever alias because you can't handle being a grown up, contributing member to the society that cadets ironically have some part in preserving. You tell Cadets at the Citadel to grow up and open their eyes to the new world. Well then we kindly tell you to mind your own business because what we do is no concern of yours. Leave the fighting to us you cowards. We all know that you never had the opportunity to fight for a cause or stand up for what you believe in. Thats half the reason this Country is so screwed up today. Keep it up guys, I only hope your immaturity is a reflection of a young, clouded mind. God help us all if you are grown adults attacking a group of young people that serves you more than you will ever know or understand. "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things." I urge you to read the rest of John Stuart Mill's "On War", maybe his words may bring a sense of duty and patriotism to the one-sided fantasy world you think exists. Your narrow sighted views combined with your complete ignorance makes my ring just as special as it was when it was first created. If ivy league elitists didn't rule the world we would send you guys over to the sandbox, maybe then you'll appreciate what you have. How do you expect to know anything about yourself if you've never been in a fight. No truer words have ever been spoken. Marinade on that before you go running your mouth about things that do not concern you. My institution needs no defending...but you do. I hope Saturday acts as a revival to reaffirm and rekindle the ideals of the Citadel. Maybe then I can actually tolerate your peanut gallery comments about the traditions I so strongly believe in and uphold. Why don't you guys go out and save the Manatees if you have all this pinned up energy reserved for blasting my school with hate and ridicule?

I traveled from Florida to South Carolina to see the "New" stadium and watch the Bulldogs play their first game against an Ivy team. The stadium was impressive and Citadel played a great second half. The halftime performance by the cadets and scoreboard operator was disgraceful. One expects dicipline at a military school. There was none. Alums were turning toward the president's box screaming for him to do something. There was no reaction from the president, tac officers or cadet officers. Of course, we were ignorant of what precipitated the boos and running of scoreboard ads while Princeton's band performed.
After the game I noted that Princeton's fans stood politely while our anthem played. Then, Princeton played their school song, competing again with the scoreboard. While leaving the stadium I asked a cadet what the booing was about. He advised that Princeton burned an American flag on the parade ground. Another said they burned a cross at a local church. Didn't they kill any puppies?
I'm proud of my school but was embarassed Saturday afternoon. The Princeton's were our guests and Gen Rosa was the official host. They may (or may not) have been poor guests but we failed. The Southern Conference has a Code of Conduct policy. It should be invoked.

This Princeton behavior when visiting campuses other than Ivy League should have been well known to the Citadel Administration. 32 years ago I attended a game between my alma mater Fordham U in NYC and Princeton. The band snaked its way through our campus insulting our academic prowess, our religious affiliation, our location in a poor Bronx neighborhood, our poor old Mascot and anything else that came to their minds. The student body at Fordham, at that time, was mostly kids from the NYC 5 boroughs, NJ, and Long Island. Apparently the kids were well acquainted with "breakin' chops" and answered in kind. No violence. No outrage. No whining newspaper columns.

SOS.... If you are truly a troop supporter, why haven't you begun to thank the numerous Citadel Cadets and alums who just got back from their most recent deployment to Afghanistan and Iraq. Many Citadel cadets enlist in the military during their stay at the Citadel. Some deploy in the middle of their education along with the rest of our brave military. Honestly, I would like to personally invite you to the September 27th football game at 1pm. The Citadel plays Western Carolina. It should be a pretty good game, but most importantly it is military appreciation day. Veteran Alumnus and Veteran Cadets are being honored at half time. A 2006 grad will be giving the coin toss. This young man lost his legs in an explosion while overseas. According to reports of this incident this gentleman was a fine solider and a hero. Please come to the game, it will give you a chance to thank those brave Citadel men who fought for you. Furthermore, if you are such and avid Bush supporter, do a video search on Bush's most recent visit to the Citadel. See how our president describes how important institutions like the Citadel and VMI are to not only our military but also our economy. And then please take a look at the graduation speakers who have come and honored our graduates with commencement speeches. You can watch them on the citadel web page if you'd like. The most recent graduating class included the entire class of 1942. I'm sure you don't know the significance of that but they left their senior year to go fight in the war. This past may they were honored as honorary graduates for their sacrifice and dedication to our country. Its brave men like that, that I am proud to call myself a Citadel man.

mrcitadel2008 superhero,
Take a deep breath and let it out slowly. Now tell us how you really feel.
Soft? While you're were learning what part does what and playing soldier at The Citadel, some of us have already been there and done that. Desert Shield/Storm(decorated), Hurricane/famine relief, Lebanon, Sinai, Southern/Northern Watch(decorated), Korea and Iraq twice(decorated). You've done what again hero? Remember now, visiting the air show and playing video games don't count. We can match DD214s anytime, Oh wait you don't have one? So please mighty mouse, let us know when you get to the front lines. Save your duty, honor, and country mantra for a knob that's intimidated by tough guys.
War is the ugliest thing. It brings out the worst in the human race. Your myopic neanderthal thinking only adds to it. When you experience it tough guy, you'll know and take all those romantic novels of war, duty, honor books and use them as toilet paper or kindling. So save your romantic visions of war for fiction/history class. Combat is survival and most if not all troopers fight for their buddy not some stylized vision of war/patriotism.
I also have some suggested reading. Read Generation Kill/Hunting for Al Quida/Books by Michael Yon/Books by Col Beckwith.
We appreciate your definition of patriotism though or at least I do. It's more than marching around a parade ground thinking it's the only kind and if we aren't lock step lemmings in thought and purpose, than we're wrong.
So pick up your nerf gun, because guns make you feel tough, and stand tall at the gates to fight off the next band that invades the walls. For an institution, I'll refrain from the obvious comment, that doesn't need a lot of defending you did a wretched job with your spittle filled tirade. Now wipe off your keyboard and monitor.
Manatees are creatures worthy of saving so stop picking on them before I have to call Ken Berger and tell them how mean you are.
Funny you quote Mill's, who was an ardent liberal and anti-war, his book "On Liberty" was good read on individualism, not welcomed at The Citadel huh? He wasn't a big fan of slavery, wrote early on the poor treatment of women. He also had this famous quote:
"Conservatives aren't necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives."
John Stuart Mills from 1859 in the context of the Suez and Crimean actions:
"There seems to be no little need that the whole doctrine of non-interference with foreign nations should be reconsidered, if it can be said to have as yet been considered as a really moral question at all... To go to war for an idea, if the war is aggressive, not defensive, is as criminal as to go to war for territory or revenue; for it is as little justifiable to force our ideas on other people, as to compel them to submit to our will in any other respect."
So yeah mrcitadel2008 wannabe soldier, chew on those liberal's quotes.

The class of 1942, part of The Greatest Generation ever to grace this country, whether they be Citadel, West Pointers, VMI or the common man who died fighting for us and those that served through the years, are more than deserved our respect.
This is a completely separate issue from the antics of the classless hecklers/thugs in uniform and the yahoos of the Princeton band.

If I knew of a single alum or cadet from the the Citadel that claimed or pretended to actually to be apart of our military and never served a day, then I'd have a problem with them as well. The Citadel teaches principles like integrity and honor. Thats what the Citadel ring represents. But I live here in Charleston and encounter alumnus and cadets all the time. I never once have observed or heard of anyone pretending to be apart of the military that wasn't. And if anyone is, I hope they realize that they are disrespecting those Citadel men who have made that sacrifice. I'm extremely proud of those Citadel men who have chosen to serve, but I'm also proud to claim all Citadel men as my brothers. I'll agree with your insight in to how those that essentially disgraced the Citadel will be dealt with. I have no problems with anyone who serves their country, active, guard or reserve forces, Citadel or not. We are all kin in arms. I can understand the pride that you and others take in your school.
It's unfortunate that the antics have brought unwanted negative attention on the school. If the conduct is widespread, then I would hope the commandant handles these folks who don't know what honor is and provide them a lesson that changes the behavior displayed.
I think when incidents like this occur, I for one call the institution archaic. It displays the worst tendencies of what we dislike. It mocks the discipline and efforts of you and the many before you. I maybe off base, but that's how I see it. It may not be. It's unfortunate.

If your Cadets believe that their behaviour on Saturday was in any way appropriate for future officers then there has been a complete failure on the part of the college to teach them what should be expected. Certainly The Military College of South Carolina can do significantly better than this.

At this point we have all begun to beat a dead horse. I hope you all can agree that both Princeton and The Citadel are fine institutions. In which both alumni have historically produced fine military personnel and leaders in our community. We should all be embarrassed of this incident, both parties had a few individuals disgrace themselves. Alumni from both institutions have great reputations because of three reasons: the fine men who have come before us, the fine faculties that have produce graduates from each institution, and the principles on which each institution were founded on. Anyone apart of the actual incident should quit pointing fingers and accept that they all acted like a boneheads this past weekend. You should start making restitution for your immature actions so this never happens again. I apologize on behalf of the entire Citadel family for anyone who was mistreated by this unfortunate incident. The games back in the 90s were a whole lot more rowdy and because of this the Bulldogs won a whole lot more games. Princeton should have known better and is used to the reactions that they receive as a "Scramble Band". It is the whole reason they have one. They are currently banned from both Harvard and Stanford for their shaninigans. Grow up people! It was just a FOOTBALL GAME!! Talk about making mountains out of mole hills! Who wants to go to a football game where the fans aren't rowdy and enthusiastic about their team?! I think it is unfair to put all the blame on Princeton because clearly there are two sides to this story. Anyone who has ever encountered a cadet from the Citadel knows how arrogant they can be. I am a female student at the College of Charleston and have had the displeasure to know many young men at the college who do not live up to the Citadel name. While the Princeton band may have been disrespectful, I believe that they were only because they were disrespected in the first place. News articles are supposed to be unbiased...what happened to that here?
