Entire district of Charter schools would cost more

The Post and Courier
Tuesday, September 23, 2008

The question was simple but politically loaded: How much would it cost if every school in Charleston County decided to become a charter school?

The answer: $80.5 million more.

School Board Chairman Hillery Douglas asked district leaders to come up with an answer to the question so charter school supporters could understand what charter schools cost. He's hoping the figure will spur the board to put a moratorium on approving any additional charter schools until the district can get a handle on its finances, he said.

"They need to take a look at what they're doing before they bankrupt the district," he said.

That question to the school district is like asking a business if the competition's product is better compared to his own. Of course if you ask the school district what it would cost it will come up with a number that is prohibitively higher than keeping it public. Mr. Douglas should have asked an independent group to analyze the question, probably a group of business leaders who understand cost/benefit analysis. He could have also asked a charter school advocacy group what they thought the price tag would be, I'm sure the answer would have been vastly different. It's the right question but asked to the totally wrong people. This question is invalidated by the group answering it. How ridiculous.
