Wolves clobber N. Charleston

Saturday, September 20, 2008

ST. STEPHEN — It seems nothing can stop the Timberland Wolves. Certainly not the North Charleston Cougars.

The Wolves kept their record unblemished at 5-0 with yet another dominating performance, crushing North Charleston, 58-6, on Friday night.

"Our offense in the first half was about as good as I've seen in the seven years I've been here," said Timberland coach Art Craig. "The thing that was enjoyable to watch was that we were able to do a variety of things."

Timberland threw only two passes in the second half, and those were by reserve quarterback Jordan Goodman. The majority of the starters took most of the fourth quarter off.

North Charleston (3-2) was never in it, and averted the shutout with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Denzel Myers to Denzel White with 2:39 to play.

The Wolves have allowed 14 points in five games.

"This could be a blessing in disguise, depending on how the kids look at it," said North Charleston coach Jimmy Brown.

"We definitely got taken behind the woodshed tonight. It will test the character of our team."

The Cougars were working off a short week, coming off a 42-34 overtime loss to Woodland on Monday night.

"We had a lot of stuff going on, but that's no excuse," Brown said. "When the lights come on, you've got to zero in and focus."

Timberland led 44-0 at the half, scoring on all six possessions.

The Wolves pounded away with the running game and didn't really need to pass, but when they did, it was with deadly effectiveness.

Quarterback Cody Craig completed 6 of 7 passes in the first half for 90 yards and a touchdown. Craig also rushed for two touchdowns.

"If you want to put nine people on the line of scrimmage, you're in trouble," Craig said. "We've got some receivers who can catch the ball, our backs can catch the ball and I thought Cody did a really good job tonight."

Thoroughly dominated, North Charleston missed on critical early scoring opportunities.

Two on-the-money throws from Myers that looked like sure touchdowns were dropped.

Two big plays in the passing game gave the Cougars their best scoring chance of the half, a first-and-goal at the 8-yard line, but it was wiped out by the Wolves with two sacks.

"It was one of those nights," Brown said. "I think our kids kind of packed it in early and didn't compete and that was what I was disappointed in."
