Bail denied in toddler's death
Boyfriend accused of kneeing, throwing toddler; suspect asks to attend boy's funeral
By Noah Haglund
SUMMERVILLE A live-in-boyfriend is accused of kneeing his girlfriend's 22-month-old son in the head, then throwing him on the ground the day before the child died, an investigator's affidavit says.
The Post and Courier
Justin Hillerby, 27, is escorted by police officers Thursday into a bail hearing at Summerville Municipal Court. Judge denied bail for Hillerby.

Justin Hillerby bond hearing
Justin Hillerby, 27 appears for a bail hearing in Summerville on a charge of homicide by child abuse in the death of 22-month-old Blaise Spoerl. No bail was set because a circuit judge must set bail on a charge carrying a possible life sentence.

Justin Hillerby, 27, is charged with homicide by child abuse in the death of Blaise Spoerl. The child's mother woke up Monday to find her son in his crib, covered in blood and lifeless.
Hillerby appeared in Summerville's municipal court today, where a judge denied his bail. The suspect said little, but did have one question for Chief Municipal Judge Tom Finucan.
"I would like to know if I could go to the funeral on Saturday," he asked.
"No, sir," the judge replied, "I don't think you'll be bonded by then."
The hearing began around 10:40 a.m. and lasted a little over 5 minutes. The toddler's mother attended, but sat quietly and showed no emotion.
The proceeding was largely a formality because a circuit judge must set bail on any charge carrying a possible life sentence. At the outset, the judge informed Hillerby that homicide by child abuse carries a prison term of 20 years to life.
The charging documents detail actions that Hillerby reportedly told police about when they questioned him on Monday:
He described striking the child in the head with his knee and throwing him onto the floor headfirst. When the youngster got on his feet, he wobbled to a seat looking like a "zombie."
Later, while sitting in a high chair, the child had trouble holding his head up. It was swaying back and forth, as if he had no muscle control.
When Hillerby carried the child from the chair to his room, he struck his head against the bedroom door frame and left the front of the victim's head against the crib. The child wouldn't open his eyes while Hillerby was carrying him.
Afterward, Hillerby didn't seek medical attention for the child or check on him for about 12 hours, the affidavit says.
Police said their investigation continues.

And this process took place over the course of several hours? I guess since it wasn't premeditated, he won't get the death penalty, although what's going to happen to him in prison once they find out he's a child murdered will probably be just as bad - and last a whole lot longer...

We need to have an alcatraz for people like this. In the middle of the water.... bait the sharks and give them weapons, and let all the no good people like child abusers, molesters, rapists, murders and so on... eliminate each other.... This is a terrible thing to have happened and I pray for the older sister of this child.

There's a scene in the movie "The Handmaid's Tale" where a man is accused & convicted of raping a pregnant handmaid. The judge orders him to be thrown to the handmaids who then swarm him and literally rip him apart. I'm thinking something of this sort would be appropriate in this case...let a swarm of mothers take care of the SOB. And should the "mother" ever be convicted of responsibility in this tragedy...let her face the same punishment.

dead and he not facing the death penalty. We all need to vote and get involved in changing the child abuse/murder laws and penalties. How do all you hard working tax payers

Amen James Crackcorn. Like I said before South Carolina needs to stiffen the penalties for child abuse/murder. We need to enact Blaise's Law. We don't mind sentencing teenage boys to an outragous 10 years. I understand armed robbery even with a toy gun is bad. But, this State is over the top on punishing teenagers and people on drug charges. They need to spend some of our tax money on stopping these child abusers before more innocent children die.

There is no telling how many beatings the baby took before this monster took his life. Let me know if the bastard needs a roommate. CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Melissa Georgoulis says she was surprised to hear about Justin Hillerby's arrest.
"My first reaction was, yeah right. Justin would never do that to a child," Georgoulis said.
Georgoulis says she's been dating Hillerby three years and has a child with him. Javen is now 19 months old.
"I ended up getting Justin, and thought that I'd found my Prince Charming, and I didn't", she said.
She says at first their relationship was fine.
"He was a good boyfriend. He liked to party. He was a party boy. But he is young," Georgoulis said.
then she says their relationship became rocky.
"I was five months pregnant. He would body slam me. He's thrown me up against the wall, choked me, lifted me up off my feet," Georgoulis recalled.
"I filed reports but I never went through with them because I thought he could change. I thought he would do better."
Melissa says she was shocked to hear Hillerby was charged in the death of 22-month old Blaise Spoerl.
"I left my children home with justin because I trusted him."

I still cannot wrap my brain around the fact that this poor child went through this. There is absolutely nothing that a child can do to warrant those actions. There is nothing that a 22 month old could ever do to justify any part of what happened here. It is unfathomable that this happened.
Justin Hillerby should be placed in general population at whatever prison he ends up in. I don't think he should be allowed in AdSeg when he gets to prison. He should have to stand up to the other killers out there and answer for his crime. The guys in prison generally don't take too kindly to people that hurt or kill a child.
And, I don't think the mother is any better than her live-in boyfriend. She should rot under the jail in my opinion. This is most likely not the first time that something has happened to Blaise. And, the fact that she left her baby in Hillerby's care doesn't speak well for her character or parenting.

Some have wondered if the scum gave alcohol to the baby, which made him like a "zombie". I doubt it because:
1. Hillerby assaulted the baby because of a spilled beer, so he probably wouldn't share his precious beer with anyone
2. The baby probably looked like a "zombie" because he had a head injury when he was kicked to the floor.

God has rescued this child from the life he was leading, and from future hurt. This young life served his purpose on the earth. As mere mortals, we can only speculate what that purpose was, but I suspect it could have been to bring attention to situations described in the home. Rest assured, there was a purpose, and we will understand by and by. We must have faith. And that certainly doesn't lessen the hurt for the young innocent child lost and the terrible suffering he endured while alive. Who knows, the purpose could possibly have been to cause this scumbag to be locked away from some other innocent child. The truth is, though, that little Blaise is now in the arms of Jesus, and will never hurt again! Praise God!
