Just 51 more days to go.
Now that the Democratic and Republican faithful have returned from their national conventions, the Lowcountry's political season is beginning to boil.
And even though most experts figure GOP nominee Sen. John McCain will win South Carolina with ease, the presidential race is stirring up the most passion — and the most activity — on both sides.
Many local politicians will cruise to re-election without opposition on Nov. 4, but voters also will decide a host of other congressional, county and school board races.
Even if McCain wins South Carolina, the magnitude of his victory here will have important repercussions for Palmetto State Democrats eyeing the 2010 gubernatorial contest or other statewide offices, said College of Charleston political science professor Bill Moore. Democrats have had little success here lately, holding only one of nine statewide posts, neither U.S. Senate seat and just two of the six congressional seats.
"Let's see what happens in November and see if the Democratic party is becoming more competitive statewide," Moore said. "From the politicos point of view, the presidential election is the one they're watching most closely."
But don't tell Nora Kravec of Johns Island that Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama has no chance here.
Kravec, who has spent much of her free time volunteering for Obama, especially signing up new voters at barber shops, grocery stores and wherever else she can. She noted there were 11 registration drives scheduled for Saturday alone, and the campaign plans to open a Lowcountry office any day now.
Not only did more South Carolinians vote Democratic during January's presidential primaries, but Obama's haul of 294,898 votes was almost twice as many as the 147,686 that McCain got.
"We made history in January, and we want to do it again," Kravec said. "We think we're going to make South Carolina blue this year."
Charleston County GOP Chairwoman Lin Bennett would disagree, noting that McCain's vice presidential pick of conservative Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has reinvigorated the local Republican base.
"The volunteers are coming out of the woodwork. My phone has been ringing off the hook," she said. "A lot of our voters crossed over in the Democratic primary to vote against Hillary (Clinton). It seems like they've come home now."
Bennett said she saw the excitement over Palin at a recent McCain party on James Island. "There were three men there, but the rest were very young women who were very excited to get involved. Sarah Palin has motivated them to get out and be involved," she said. "We're not having to work that hard to register them because they're coming to us to be registered."
One reason the presidential race is getting so much attention is because in South Carolina's other statewide race, few expect a close contest between incumbent Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham and Democratic challenger Bob Conley.
"That's a non-race," Moore said. "Lindsey Graham is home free. His opponent may actually be a more conservative Republican than Lindsey Graham, but he (Conley) has no money and no credibility as a Democrat."
The First Congressional Race in which incumbent Republican Rep. Henry Brown faces a battle from Democratic businesswoman and philanthropist Linda Ketner is expected to be closer, but Moore noted the coastal district tilts heavily toward the GOP.
"She's creating the name recognition," Moore said, "even though it's a difficult race for a Democrat to run, she has the resources to run a viable campaign."
In Charleston County, state Rep. Wallace Scarborough, R-James Island, faces a challenge from Democratic lawyer Anne Peterson Hutto, and state Reps. David Mack, Leon Stavrinakis and Vida Miller also face opponents.
Most state Senators from the Lowcountry are likely to cruise to a new four year term except in Senate District 38, where former Sen. Mike Rose faces independent Bill Collins and District 42, where incumbent Democrat Robert Ford faces Scotty Sheriff of the GOP.
Most voters in Berkeley and Dorchester counties will see relatively few local contests except for school board seats, while Charleston County voter also will decide among 10 candidates for five school board seats. County voters also will fill three County Council seats, and the results will determine if the Republicans keep their 5-4 majority there.

Maybe if the P & C had reported how John McCain assaulted a 92 year old Strom Thurmond in the 90's, or how Palin was the only mayor in Alaska to make rape victims pay for rape kits, or how she wanted to ban books, or the lies of the new "swiftboaters', or how Palin is grossly undereducated and is unable to tell the truth, maybe then the GOPers wouldn't be voting the straight ticket again...
But then again, SC went for Bush twice....

Actually I thought Palin did very well on the interview. Yes, she did ask Charlie Gibson...."What do you mean by..." But, don't we all want to know what a reporter is really asking before answering. It was a very ambiquous question and she needed to ask for clarification to make sure she was answering correctly.
Very smart when dealing with journalists.

The "Stright Talk Express" hid Palin in its version of the Witness Protection Program while proclaiming that she had indeed traveled outside the country. Among the countries she supposedly "visited" were Iraq and Ireland. The commander of the Alaska National Guard has stated that Palin visited an outpost NEAR Iraq, but never set foot inside Iraq. Her visit to Ireland was merely a refueling stop on her return from the questionable Middle East trip. If the Repugs could spread rampant lies about McCain in 2000, they could certainly have no qualms with regard to lying about Palin's qualifications now. As for her being a proponent of abstinence, not only did the practice fail her daughter, it apparently failed her as well. CNN has reported that her first child was born nearly 8 months after her marriage. Come on people READ, QUESTION, THINK FOR YOURSELVES!

Bill Moore--college professor--not someone I'd expect to be really in touch with reality.
He says Bob Conley has "no credibility as a Democrat." According to his definition, neither did Fritz Hollings nor do other conservative Democrats have any credibility.
Bob Conley is AGAINST the military occupations of Iraq and other countries as opposed to Lindsey Graham's recent trip to the Republic of Georgia promising billion$ in U.S. taxpayer money as he is apparently shopping for a new cold war with Russia.
Bob Conley is AGAINST such draconian security measures as the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act that ignore Constitutional restraints on the the federal government's ability to spy on U.S. citizens. Lindsey Graham would rather create a police state than secure our borders and ports.
Bob Conley is AGAINST "free trade" agreements that are anything but. Bob Conley is for FAIR trade and calling upon Congress to resume its duties in protecting American industry from unfair foreign competition and to stop Lindsey Graham and other neoconservatives' subsidizing of Chinese and other countries' products.
Bob Conley is AGAINST H-1B visa programs bringing in hi-tech workers and engineers to make the university degrees of U.S. citizens worth less or worthless.
Bob Conley is FOR secure borders and ports and to punish law-breaking corporations and businesses that hire illegals, punishing those most needy among us and depressing wages.
Bob Conley is FOR America and U.S. citizens enjoying the rights and benefits of true sovereignty and the protection from the criminal elements that still today, seven years after 9/11, cross our borders at will.
To my way of thinking, as a patriotic, Constitution-abiding U.S. citizen, there's no contest. Lindsey Graham, whom I foolishly voted for in 2002, will NOT get my vote this time around.
After his having stabbed US citizens in the back over and over and THEN calling us "bigots" when we objected, I consider him undeserving of any respect whatsoever. Lindsey Graham is a man who calls his U.S. citizen detractors "idiots" in public. His arrogance is supreme and his self-aggrandizing is the stuff that tyrants are made of.
I look forward to voting this traitor out of office November 4th!

I'm actually disappointed with the McCain campaign. After Bush's brutal campaign in 2000, it seems like he would run an honorable campaign this time knowing how it felt. I liked McCain in 2000. I thought he was a nice guy and still think he is, but the running of his campaign scares me. The lies that are being said everyday are amazing, especially since they can be easily refuted by the internet (i.e. Bridge to Nowhere, earmarks). It seems very underhanded. I don't think I can take another presidency where they flat out lie to the American public, even if there is an R by his name.
Also, it seems that the races have already be decided in SC. It shows that South Carolinians only vote by party and not by who is best for them at the time. And yes, someone from another party can sometimes be better than the Republican party candidate.

With a couple exceptions, this is a pretty sad sampling of SC voters. Y'all need to lay off the talk radio and the Fox "News." "Cool-aide" [sic] and the herd are not exclusively Democratic domains; if you fail to discover the facts and at least try to understand them then you are part of the problem. Sadly, the national media, whether you think they're biased right or left are so grossly opinionated that they're not informing voters satisfactorily. C-span is just about the only outlet left for factual news, but they're going to make you figure out what it all means on your own.
"A lot of our voters crossed over in the Democratic primary to vote against Hillary (Clinton). It seems like they've come home now."--Charleston County GOP Chairwoman Lin Bennett
Wow! She admits right out that she knows republicans were voting in the Democratic race to prevent the Dems from selecting a candidate they perceived as more likely to beat McCain. Now, that's democracy at work.

Isn't it about time for some articles comparing the two candidates's for congress' positions on the issues? The only reporting I've seen was on the Kiawah Island sand spit / flood insurance issue. We have a real, competitive race for Congress. Where do these two candidates stand on the budget, taxes, the wars, global warming, perserving the Francis Marion forrest, Federal participation in education, expansion of the State Port's authority and it's impact on air quality (if we exceed EPA standards, what will their position be on applying for a waiver so additional industry can locate here. Do they have ideas on who the Federal government should or should not support our tourism industry. What about regulation of the airlines as it impacts our airport?
There are real differences betweeen Ketner and Brown on many of these issues. Surely that is more important than a horse race article. Everybody knows we have lots of Republicans in SC, however we continue to have elections so shouldn't we discuss the issues and merits of the candidates?

The Obama campaign, the Democratic Party headed by Howard Dean and the major (liberal) media-are all working in overdrive to destroy and smear Sarah Palin.
They believe if they can destroy this courageous young woman and popular governor, they will end John McCain's bid for president.
Just this week, commentator Bill Maher ridiculed Sarah's baby son who has Down's syndrome. These people are absolutely despicable.
They have one goal: Put Barack Obama - the most radical left-winger ever nominated by the Democratic Party - in the Oval Office.
Obama promised he would abide by campaign finance limits, as John McCain has agreed to.
He lied. This week alone, Obama raised $8 million! He could easily spend $500 million during his whole campaign to buy the White House.
How for 20 years he sat silently as his minister, the radical preacher
Jeremiah Wright, said he hated America - the same preacher who blamed the 9/11 attacks on OUR OWN GOVERNMENT.
The involvement of convicted felon Tony Resko in the purchase of Obama's$1,300,000 home.
His despicable association with his friend William Ayers, who was on the FBI's Most Wanted list for over 10 terrorist attacks.
At the age 25, Obama was backed by a radical Muslim activist close to the Saudi royal family when he applied to Harvard Law School.
William Charles Ayers and Barack Obama have been friends for decades.
There is clear evidence that their lives and dealings have been intertwined for many years.
Obama and Ayers were friends way back in 1986.
They even served together in 1995 on the Annenberg Challenge, overseeing the distribution of about $50 million to area schools.
That same year, Ayers hosted Obama in his own home and donated to his campaign.
What does the association between Ayers and Obama say about Obama's political views and perspective?
Ayers was an anti-American, traitorous radical who will stop at nothing to push his hateful communist agenda.
In the 1960s and 70s, he was a leader in the notorious underground terrorist group, the "Weathermen."
The Weathermen declared war on the United States government and they bombed over 30 establishments (leading to multiple fatalities, including police officers).

Again left wing NBC owned propagada..The same bunch that had to canned two of thier top commitators. If they tired that with Michelle Obama they would be called racist but when they go after Palin the left calls it absolutely hilarious. Tina Fay should be ashaned of her self. As a writter has does Tina Fay feel about making less money because she is women. Her little act disgraced women of America. Lets see a skit with Michelle Obama in bed with William Ayers and Rev Wright. I would find that absolutely hilarious, because in sense it nails the the Michelle Obama impression!!!!

Proletariat, I hesitate to ask you to make sense, but why did you choose Karl Marx's name for the oppressed working class as your screen name? This seems like and odd choice, given your anti-left views. Websters defines proletariat as "The indigent class in the State." Is this really the persona you were aiming for?

Proletariat says "Irony is ironic...isnt it? blah blah blah. Its just down right funny, a marxists sees obama for what he is!"
So, you're feigning to be a socialist to imply that you know something about socialists? And, this is to justify all of your anti-socialist rhetoric? You're trying too hard.
If Obama was even a little socialist, he'd point out that medical insurance companies are the reason healthcare costs are so out of control and his health care policy would include no subsidization or suplementation of insurance but rather an outright replacement of it with a state healthcare finance agency. He's no socialist.

"it is what happens when the social welfare programs cost mre than the tax revenue the feds can collect"
Social welfare is a pretty small part of the budget; you're talking nonsense.
"rugged individualism is what conservatives are all about."
Rugged individualism is the fantasy that so-called conservatives like to associate themselves with. It's like the fantasy people who get tattoos have about it making them unique.
Lay off the Mein Kamph; it's warping your brain.

spankerbuns - You're an idiot. According to my dictionary,
doctrine - noun
1. a particular principle, position, or policy taught or advocated, as of a religion or government
Ummmm, ya, I'm thinking we need a little bit more clarification when a journalist asks the question:
"What do you think of the Bush doctrine"
In addition spanky, she answered the question beautifully and I think that is really what ticks you off...can't stand it that she is articulate, a woman, and a republican.
Plus, who the heck thinks it's OK to speak about a woman Vice-Presidential candidate in such disrespectful terms as I've heard from MANY democrats here and on other forums.
I'm talking about the people that are making sexist comments that have nothing what-so-ever to do with anything other than the fact that Palin is a woman.
Democrats....you are showing your true colors when you make sexist comments. A word of advise to all of the female democrats out there.....beware your own party. If they will criticize a woman simply because of her gender than what do they really think of all women?

Jane, Jane, Jane, here are some legitimate sources (I know you don't know the meaning of the word) to counter your propaganda:
First of all the election is Kenya was anything but legitimate. US-led reports and independent observors had their doubts:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/717...
http://www.iri.org/africa/kenya/pdfs/...
On the origin of Barack's name: (I won't even get into your confusion of the Arab and Black distinctions, it is very complicated but in short, you are way off base, per usual JANE)
http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/langua...
None of what you said in this whole Barack is a Muslim diatribe, actually means he was or ever was Muslim. He went to a public school in Indonesia (which like many public schools there) that taught the Islamic faith as part of its curriculum. It's akin to going to a Catholic school. My Jewish friend went to an episcopal school and learned about the tenets of christianity, and that in no way, shape, or form made her Christian. Underlying in your entire post is inherent demonization of the "other" in Barack Obama. He has ties to another country, another religion and (gasp) another ethnicity that's "foreign" to you. Your fear and derangement is better served on a conspiracy theory blog. You, per usual, are ridiculous.
