Man shot and killed in North Charleston

Saturday, September 13, 2008

— A fatal shooting near Oakwood Avenue Park in North Charleston launched an investigation that brought out the SWAT team to apprehend a subject.

Thomas Scott Yelton, 41, was found shot multiple times early Saturday, said Charleston County Deputy Coroner Dottie Lindsay. He was later pronounced dead, said Spencer Pryor, North Charleston police public information officer.

Police responded to the 4600 block of Oakwood Avenue at 2:45 a.m., Pryor said.

According to witness accounts, Yelton was brought to an Oakwood Avenue house by several subjects and was forced out of the vehicle. He was then shot, Pryor said.

The victim’s truck was not on the scene and was later located in the 1300 block of Bexley Street, less than a mile away, police said.

There, Tyron Washington and Tyreze Hughes were arrested and charged with burglary first degree, police said. Washington and Hughes entered the house without the consent of the owner or occupants, Pryor said.

A third subject refused to come out of the house. SWAT responded, went inside and apprehended the subject without incident. That person may face a charge of hindering an investigation, Pryor said.

Police have no motive for the shooting, and the investigation will continue.

Yelton was a resident of North Charleston, but also was known to live in Greenwood, Lindsay said.
