Remark on Palin draws quick fire
2 leading S.C. Republicans criticize Democratic chief
Two of South Carolina's leading Republicans were quick to pounce Wednesday on a remark by state Democratic Party Chairwoman Carol Fowler saying that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's "primary qualification (for vice president) seems to be that she hasn't had an abortion."
U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham called the remark "completely out of bounds" and a sign that Democrats are in "meltdown mode" over Republican John McCain's choice of a running mate.
Fowler later released a statement of apology for her comment, which first appeared on www.politico.com.
"I personally admire and respect the difficult choices that women make everyday, and I apologize to anyone who finds my comment offensive," she said. "I clumsily was making a point about people in South Carolina who may vote based on a single issue. Whether it's the environment, the economy, the war or a woman's right to choose, there are people who will cast their vote based on a single issue. That was the only point I was attempting to make."
Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan said Fowler's comments "do not reflect our views in any way," politico.com reported.
Fowler's GOP counterpart, South Carolina Republican chair Katon Dawson, called her statement "offensive, outrageous and most importantly, dead wrong."
Palin's pro-life position has helped re-energize the Republican base, while Democrats have criticized her political experience, which includes two years as Alaska's governor and service as mayor and councilwoman in Wasilla, Alaska.
"Gov. Sarah Palin is a strong pro-life, pro-family reform-minded conservative with meaningful experience whose message has resonated in South Carolina," Dawson said. "Fowler's statement is born out of desperation from a campaign that is sputtering across the South."
Graham said Democratic presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama — who has called for a new kind of politics — should apologize for Fowler's remark.
"I hope he will take this opportunity to step out and get this campaign back on track and reject this really outrageous, demeaning statement of someone who's accomplished a lot in her life," he said during a hastily arranged afternoon conference call with reporters.
Graham said he knows Fowler "fairly well, and I'm quite frankly shocked and surprised she would say such a thing. It's very uncharacteristic of Mrs. Fowler to say something that is this out of bounds."
Her husband, former Democratic National Committee Chairman Don Fowler, caused a stir just a few weeks ago when he was recorded saying that Hurricane Gustav's approach toward New Orleans on the eve of the Republican National Convention "just demonstrates that God's on our side."
Don Fowler later apologized, but a video clip of his comment has been viewed more than 350,000 times on YouTube.com.

The more these people attacking Palin talk, the more harm they cause Obama. I don't think they get it. I am still leaning Obama, but how much more of this can people take? I really think Obama is losing ground nationally over this. The fact that this race is even close is suprising. Why are these people even thinking about Palin? I would just attack attack attack Bush. True, McCain is the only one in the race to have RUN VS BUSH, but our message of McCain=Bush could work. Not destroy the life of a mother of 5 and Gov. of Alaska. I once again am losing my faith in the dems. They must be really scared of Palin or morons. It could be both. Someone reassure me, please.

What else to expect from a Party that worships at the altar of Secular Humanism? Abortion is their sacrifice. The big joke is that Margaret Sanger, from whom Planned Parenthood originated, was into abortion, eugenics and a Nazi sympathiser. Part of her plan was the "reduction" of the Black race. I love irony. Blacks primarily vote for the Party which wants to exterminate them. No wonder the Democrats keep education dumbed down. after Obama seizes power, they can proceed with their diabolical plan, and Nobama will start saying "Wait! I'm half white! Let me pull my grandmother from under the bus and I'll show you!"

Sanger's Motto "More from the fit, less from the unfit." - Imagine, if democrats did't keep aborting their base, they'd be winning in a landslide.

"Stand" is right (well left) both parties need to get away from this type politics and give us their thoughts on running the country. That's what we vote on. I mean if there were umanned mics all over the campaign trail can you imagine what we would hear? Hell I know both parties are PHONIES and will tell you anything to get elected I just want to know how much its going to cost ME. And Obama will cost ME with his socialist views.
Before you liberals pipe off read the constitution and tell me where it says its the Gov's responsibilty to take care of you/me!? From welfare, medical insurance, housing, etc, etc. I SPEND MY MONEY BETTER THAN THEY DO AND THATS WHY I VOTE "R"! Republican because everyone can't be on welfare! (except for LGrahm I will vote "D" there)

I have to agree with Johnq2 on this one...the truth does hurt. Although it could have been said with more tact, she is ultimately right. Everyone got all up in arms over Bidens remark about stem cell research, but he to was ultimately right. And just for the record, I don't care for either of the parties running. I am just making a point that the individuals were not afraid to call an ugly baby an ugly baby is all.

I still think this is going to be a close race. Obama has the liberal, progressive, socialist and communist vote. They also have black community, Hispanic community, gay community, and the Muslim community in their back pocket. The democrat base will need to go out and get the illegal aliens, bums, convicted felons, child molesters, dead people, homeless people, and the mentally ill to register to vote in these border states. Don’t forget the liberals that have addresses in more than one voting district. I don't think this is going to be a landslide for McCain.
Posted by DanniD on September 11, 2008 at 6:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Riptide...it really dosen't matter who Obama or McCain get to vote for them, because the electoral vote is all that really matters anyway. And right now the Dems have most of the votes. The time to vote was for your Senator and State rep.

If Sarah Palin did not have a downs syndrome child, does anyone think for a minute that McCain would have chosen her? What I find really stupid is how Mrs Alaska can come right in attacking Obama and then when he makes a comment about her it's like "the mean old Illinois Senator is jumping on the poor little mother of a downs syndrome child"!

Moonpie-
Did you just cover-up the part of the constitution the illegal wire tapping wiped out when you read it? You should at least try to see beyond party lines and realize power can corrupt anyone.
I think welfare is taken advantage of but it should not be completely wiped out. You are fooling yourself if you think ignoring the problem will work. Right or wrong hungry people will not just sit on the corner and starve to death.

Thomas how is Oprah racist. She pick the person she wonts to support, and because she wont put Palin on her show, she is racist. I uses to give you prop for at least looking up you information, but today...you show me your are an Idiot.
Its also strange how people on here keep saying that black people are pushing children out like rabbits, and then turn around in the same post and say blacks are the one having all of the abortions. Logic do not compute with that one.
If the blacks are having all the kids, then which race is keeping the abortion centers open.
I guess that one to think about.
Palin call herself a animal, so now that Obamma uses an animal in his analysis of what McCain is trying to cover up, it's twisted to about Palin. Why is it that she can't be attacked. She is attacking. Obamma has the right to attack back, and not to be like John Kerry and turn the other check. If you can't take it, get out of the race.
Just like the republicans to do the attacking and then cry foul when they get attacked back.

Ever hear the term Renaissance MAN? Well Palin is a Renaissance WOMAN.
She has managed, in her 44 yrs, to accomplish just the sort of things those in the women's movement fought for.
How dare she not embrace the entire platform?
How dare she not conform to one stereotype, only to 'not conform' to another.
How dare she break out of one mold-the demure "little woman"- only to refuse to be put into another.
It is fascinating the way people who are anti-abortion are maligned by the very people who otherwise believe in diversity & tolerance. By the very people whose constant mantra is "do not judge". What utter hypocrisy.
I know many who are anti-abortion LEGALIZATION, not for "religious" reasons, but for reasons dealing with HUMAN rights. One does not have to be 'religious' to embrace that concept.
As a matter of fact, Dr. Bernard Nathansan, the ob-gyn who helped push through Roe v. Wade, completely reversed his position while he was an ATHEIST & this reversal was based on a support for HUMAN rights.
While it is true that for PERSONAL(i.e. religious/faith) reasons, there are many things I would not do or embrace-such as abortion & prostitution, I believe our laws are backwards on these 2 issues.
The government should protect human life which cannot protect itself. It should not deny a grown person the "right to choose" to sell her/his body for income. That is a legitimate right to choose issue !
I do not form opinions about what should be law based on my religious views.
Do no assume that all "religious" people are trying to force their religious beliefs on others by way of law. Often religious "reasoning" coincides with secular or legal reasoning.
So far I do like what I see in Palin. I imagine there might be some things about her policy I might not fully embrace. However, I am reserving final opinion on her until I have more information.

I think it is just as bad. I never said I who I was voting for. I do think it is interesting that you assumed I am a democrat by my comments. Call the wiretapping what ever you like but when the white house starts to look for ways to get around privacy laws and push the boundarys of its power I have a problem with it.
By the way, the problem that started the wiretapping issue is that the White House did not get the approval from FISA before the actual wiretapping. They claimed they did not have the time to wait.

This article is not about the remark Obama made it is about the comment Ms Fowler made. If Obama is stupid than so is John McCain and VP Dick Chaney. They both made the same comment and nothing was said. If you had listen too Sen Obama enitre speech than you would have clearly understood that he was not targeting the "moose" lady(yea I said it). Than again you may have listen to the entire speech but you are to stupid to comprehend the meaning of the comment he made. It ws not against Sarah
And you all are right Sarah is against abortion that is why she faked her pregnancy so she can raise her daughter's, who is pregnant again, son. If you watched that convention, the pregnant daughter was holding the baby with a blanket trying to cover up her current pregnancy.

Let's see - we in this great country now have a party who has nominated a woman for Vice President based on a line that she's a "reformer." But, so far, her rhetoric, when it has not been vitriolic, has revealed her rather thinly veiled history of Washington pandering, lies and half-truths:
-who dropped her support and advocacy of the infamous "bridge-to-nowhere" only after the funding was defeated in Congress
-misuse of executive power in an attempt to fire her former bother-in-law from the state police and the subsequent dismissal of the head of the state police when he would not carry through with the dismissal
-lobbying for Ted Stevens, currently under investigation for accepting bribes
-use of Alaska government funds for personal expenses
Then there is the issue of her extensive travel during the 8th month of her pregnancy to make political speeches in Texas, when it is NEVER advisable to do so, which might suggest that she really cared little about whether this child was born or not, but that her political future was all that counted.
And, let's see . . . under her parental tutelage, she has a teenage son who was part of a gang who vandalized school buses and an unmarried daughter who became pregnant (none other than Karl Rove has called this kind of parenting - "Pinhead"). Her leadership skills upon close scrutiny should be considered qualifying her to be . . . America's next Vice President????????? YIKES!

"I think welfare is taken advantage of but it should not be completely wiped out. You are fooling yourself if you think ignoring the problem will work. Right or wrong hungry people will not just sit on the corner and starve to death."
Now there is something that I believe most any decent person would agree with. Conservatives tend to point out the cheaters and are therefore seen as uncaring and mean. Liberals only seem to want to talk about the poor downtrodden not at fault and are seen at best as blind do-gooders and worst as buying votes. The truth obviously lies in between.
I don't believe one can argue that there is no problem except mean conservatives when such a high percentage of "poor people" seen on TV are obese to grossly obese and have cell phones, TV and cable. A reasonable solution could be found if all worked for it rather then shouting at each other. A 100% solution will never be found because some cheaters will always find a way around the rules but that is not a reason to let the truly needy fall through the cracks. It is also not a reason to make it so easy to quit trying in life and become a dependent of the government. A set of rules that prevent one from starving but not so good that makes it illogical to go out, overcome the odds and have a better life.

Exactly how do you think a candidate wins an Electoral Vote genius? Electoral votes are won by the popular vote in all 50 states in the union. So it very much does matter who gets who to vote for them. It is amazing how ignorant our electorate is about how our system works.
Bottom line...your vote DOES count. YOU will determine who gets South Carolinas 8 electoral votes!

Yes, that's a fact, but who cares? It has about 200,000 more people in the entire state than the Charleston tri-county area. I actually heard someone the other day on talk radio saying that she has the responsiblity of defending her state against the Soviets. As the Geico caveman says..."ehh....What???" First of all, the last time that I checked, there has been no Soviet Union since 1992. Secondly, US defense of it's borders is the responsibility of...guess what? The US military!! Wow...some people just completely amaze me.

jeff, why should Newt waste her type space in proving Thomas wrong? If I've learned any of this board (very unlikely) it's that common sense does NOT resonate. The same people will be on here quoting the same old propaganda and party lines until the cows come home. It's just how it is.
Thomas is known, along with the rest of the crazies propagandists on here to continue to quote the same old tired story about Obama and the like. It's like I could write his posts for him "Obama is a Muslim , terrorist...blah blah blah racist wife...blah blah blah MArxist...blah blah blah Ayers...blah blah blah Tax...blah blah blah Abortion...blah blah blah hates America"
See it's easy to spout lies, hard to back them up with facts. If anything, Thomas needs to come to US with some actual facts before anyone with common sense and decency takes him seriously. I've said it many times before on here to many of the normal crazies, disagree with Obama on his policies, but personal attacks and out and outright false propaganda only gets you labeled in the "crazy pile" in my book.

AMAZING! Will Republicans ever get it? Our economy (thanks to their President) is about as bad as it can get. WE are in a war that should never have been begun-we should have taken out Bin Ladin in Afghanistan and we would be done. The Republicans made zillions of sexist remarks about H. Clinton and yet they have an unqualified woman who believes that creationism should be the only theory of our existence when science clearly shows otherwise. The Republicans refuse to look at the statistics from years of so called abstinence education (a complete failure). They refuse to talk about the very real unemployment rate-housing curse brought on by deregulation of the industry (A Republican Congress). They shout family values and find their married senators in the bathroom with men. They refuse to look at Palin as just a ploy of a Republican candidate that is so unpopular with his own party that he had to pick up someone else with charisma. They shift the focus of real issues to social issues that really make NO DIFFERENCE to anyone-not even the Republican party. They have to adopt the Obama slogan because NOTHING they were doing was working. When will they talk about issues that affect our economy-our standing in the International community (if we have any left with Bush in office). When will they realize that John McCain is 72 years old, boring, out of ideas, no really conservative, and has a history of sickness. Do you really want to take the risk of McCain passing the torch to a woman who was PTA president for 1 year, tried to have books banned from a library, tried to fire said librarian because she would not do as told, lie about the hockey mom bit---only a SLIGHT lie. No, Palin is not under attack because she is a woman or because we are worried that she has taken Obamas thunder, we are worried that IF elected the USA as we know it might be a thing of the past. We are by the way a democracy-not a theocracy. Besides, I am not sure she represents MY family values. my kids were married before giving birth. I would NEVER have an abortion, but Who am I to tell another person what to do with their lives. That is between she/her partner/and her God

George Bush is Gary Cooper in the classic western "High Noon." The sheriff is about to leave office when a marauding gang is coming to town. He could leave, but he waits to face the killers as all his friends and all the townspeople, who supported him during his years of keeping them safe, slowly abandon him. In the end, he walks alone to meet the killers, because someone has to.
That's Bush. Name one other person in Washington who would be willing to stand alone if he had to, because someone had to.
OK, there is one, but she's not in Washington yet. Appropriately, at the end of "High Noon," Cooper is surrounded by the last two highwaymen when, suddenly, his wife (Grace Kelly) appears out of nowhere and blows away one of the killers! The aging sheriff is saved by a beautiful, gun-toting woman.
You draw the conclusion.......

I have no issues with him touting his boy McCain, jeff- good for him. Here is the problem that I have- he has some serious anger management issues, and he loves to insult and degrade others. There is no need for that. If you honestly "think" that you are on the winning side, do you really need to insult the other side? To me that smacks of worrying about the other candidate far too much.

You have been the one hurling insults, so you need to really get over yourself. You obviously tow the party line (no matter what they do) for the republicans...Just keep reading your subscription to the Limbaugh letter, and thinking that you are holier than now. I don't care, because your opinion means nothing to me. Anger management...you need to really look into that. Life is way to short to get so worked up and obsessed. Obviously this is a conservative v. liberal comment board -- especially with this topic. BUT, WOW! How angry and bitter do some of the conservatives sound. Unfortunately, your arguments are lost in the anger, bitterness, and insults you hurl out. I read that liberals are scared on this board all the time. Perhaps liberals do not want to get into a name-calling contest. Perhaps they prefer intelligent and logical debate. I know, I know/ There are inflamatory liberal poster, too. But some of you really take the cake. I hope that you are not as nasty in your personal lives and to people with which you come into contact.

Umm, that is because you must be new or you haven't been reading posts. Most of the stuff Thomas spouts has been disproven by COUNTLESS other posters. Why should someone prove this information to you or to Thomas?? Why don't you do your own research and find out yourself? Better yet, go on previous articles where we've gone over this TIME AND TIME again. The fact that you says "he appears" to have "a solid source facts to back him up" (what the hell is that, you must mean solid facts) says something about you. Like SC said, if you're an long time poster on this board you know better. We've heard this from thomas and others before. Nothing has changed. I suggest you spend less time jumping on the bandwagon and more time researching and making up your own mind. No one has to prove crap to you. I know that my research said he is wrong. That is what I care about. My research. It isn't anyones job to research for you. Oh and just b/c he has links to crazy propagandist websites doesn't mean it is a valid source of information.

ALL news media puts a slant on the story they are covering. It's ENTERTAINMENT these days, not news.
If you wanted real news, all media reporters would talk in a monotone fashion with no facial expressions whatsoever.
Fox News was created because CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, & MSNBC slant to liberal views. Period.
So, if those 5 networks (at least 5) slant toward the left (sometimes extremely hard), what's wrong with 1 station out there, Fox News, designed to appeal to Conservatives?
It's as entertainment these days folks, plain and simple.

Jeff - If you researched and found everything he said to be accurate then you are just as deluded as thomas if not more so. I don't spew garbage. I state my opinion. If you believe the craziest crap that come from those propaganda sites then you are part of the reason that SC is at the bottom when it comes to education. Researching on a propaganda site is not researching. Sorry. Figuring out both sides to the argument is researching, not just researching on sites that cater to what you believe in the first place. You don't call thomas a liar b/c you believe the hype. Just say it. You haven't read one thing. You take what he says at face value. On this board 97% of the posts are either people's opinions or propaganda.
Regardless of all that, I don't argue with propaganda lovers too much. It is a waste of my time and just fills up the board so consider this my last post on this article acknowledging you or thomas.

She may have personal beliefs, but so far as been the perfect republican on them. She runs on the right, governs in the middle. Republicians dont want abortion to go away. They would lose 25% of their base, the poor, religous, rural whites who would line up at the liberal food lines without key issues such as these. If dems gave up gays and abortion as key issues, they would take 75% of the vote in every election like in Europe. The only way to win on the right over there is to split the left into far left and green (France, Germany, previously Spain)

She was put on the ticket for no other reason then to get the pissed off Clinton vote, she has not done anything that would raise her to national ticket stature. I do not agree with the words of the SC democratic leader, I don’t think there are any strong leaders in that group.
She needs to hold a press conference, we need to know how she feels about issues not how good she can give a speech. I don’t want anymore of the same kind of government that we have had for the last 8 years. Bush is a traitor or he is plain stupid. If we want to be free then we have to allow others to be free. He hunted down Sadam(I am not a fan) and had him killed for what reason? Because his dad didn’t 10 years earlier? Because he had to put someone up because of 9/11? And now we are all over the world fighting anyone that says they will do something to us, why? Hitler had a plan also.
I hate the makeup of this state, we are red because the dixiecrats had to choose a party. We have fears about people for all the wrong reasons. We look for leadership, from the democrats and there is none to be found.
I need some hope that there will be real change in all government, from Joe to Mark to George.

I think with an open mind and an honest look at life experiences, personal and political associations, policy positions, and record of reform, the McCain/Palin ticket would be the best choice. Which ticket actually stands up to their own party when it is corrupt? Not the Democrats. Obama came up through the corrupt Chicago Daley machine. He associated with a known former terrorist, and started his State Senate campaign at his house. Obama opposed a bill to save the lives of babies who survive late-term abortion attempts. Obama has shown as a state legislator and during his short time in the US Senate that he will tow the line of the far left, and he has never challenged the Democratic leadership on any issue.....in fact, during his time in the state senate, he voted "present" (to avoid taking a stand on a controversial issue) more times than he voted yes or no. Joe Biden, during his 35+ years in the Senate, has likewise never challenged the Democrat leadership on any important issues.
On the other hand, McCain and Palin have both been reformers during their times of public service. McCain supported the immigration bill, campaign finance reform, and environmental regulations to the dismay of the Republican leadership. McCain has bucked the Republicans on many occasions when he sees a problem that needs to be corrected. Sarah Palin also took on a corrupt Republican establishment in her home state and defeated an incumbent governor who was very, very well financed.
So take your pick. One ticket talks change, and sticks to the old Democrat playbook 100% of the time......the other ticket has a history of reform and doing what's right for the country. McCain and Palin can bring the change we need to Washington, and actually govern in a way that puts our country first, ahead of any political party.

I have to say it, respectfully, Sangaree-- you may not get that much change with the dem ticket, but you are kidding yourself if you honestly think you are getting any change at all with McCain/Palin. You can spin it any way you like (as the dems do as well), but we are getting the same old things with either in office.

You ever notice that McCain hardly ever bends his arms at the elbow? He kinda just throws his whole arm up when he tries to wave. His face looks like a bulldog with the jowls and the extra chin but his arm movements resemble paralysis below the biceps.
Yeah, I can see the potential for a stroke...which will leave us with a PILF.

Bush is terrible when he hasn't rehearsed a speech or is thrown questions he doesn't immediately know the answer to. I actually feel sorry for him at press conferences. But if people would look little past that, you'd see that he truly cares that he does a good job.
McCain and Obama will be the same way, whichever one gets into the White House.

Jimmy Crack Corn...I think it's hilarious that in your characterizations of things Obama should remember to do during his debate. (Like the man has never spoken in public before WITHOUT a teleprompter..) you compare Michelle Obama to Omarosa and you say he should "Remember - there are only 50 states, not 57."
First of all, I adore how people love to villanize Michelle Obama, when at best she represents everything that is right with America. Succeeding against the odds, for one. Second, I think your comment about the 50 states is just petty. Candidates, especially on the campaign trail have made numerous gaffes. There's a whole website that lists them, and his were not among the worst. I think you don't have to worry about Obama's debate performance, he'll be fine, not that it will matter to the people who have already made up their mind about him.
On another note, whoever made the comment about the swing states counting the most are right on, pay attention to what is going on in Florida, Ohio, PA, Missouri, VA, Michigan et cetera. That will be the key to the election. That's what it's boiled down to the past few elections and it won't change much here. I'm in NYC now which will certainly go Dem, you guys are in SC, which will certainly go Repub...so everyone needs to contextualize their debates for a second. This board is mostly pro-McCain (or I would argue, anti-Obama) depending on the locations you see different reactions. But one thing is for sure, don't assume that because the people surrounding you are all gung ho for one candidate or another it will really make a difference in the long run. Go to PA, Fl or Ohio and make that claim, NOT here.

I've already watched Barack Obama in the Democratic debates, as well as John McCain and trust me, McCain has a lot more work to do.
Also, Michelle Obama said its the first time she was "really" proud of her country. I'm so sick of faux patriots. I'm proud of America many times, many times I'm NOT proud of America. That doesn't mean I HATE my country or am anti-American. It means I set my country to a higher standard and am always looking for us to be the best and practice what we preach. As Michelle has said many times, ONLY in America could her narrative have happened. She believes that hardwork pays off in America, where I mostly think the Horatio Alger story is a "myth" at best. Being proud of your country and being an American is more than waving a flag when its convenient to you, or putting a flag pin or your lapel or even putting your hand on your heart when you say the Pledge. It's about doing your civic duty, protecting the rights of others and not just yourself and believing in the values this country was founded on. It also means sacrificing your well-being for the well-being of the country and taking our leadership and government to task when they are corrupt or have misused our nation's resources for ill. It means being an active part of your community, not just an idle observor. THAT's what patriotism is. Many Americans have a one-dimensional view of it and it's pretty sad.

Well one gaffe of Bush's that was less funny more painful and embarassing was when he asked the president of Brazil if they "had blacks too?"
Poor Condoleeza had to speak up and say "well yeah, actually Mr. President they have the largest population of Blacks in the New World, many more than in America" That wasn't really funny, just embarassing.

Hmm trying to find one...my friend told me once that it was still "unconfirmed" rather or not he had said it and that there was an active discussion on snopes.com. Basically it boiled down to the fact that there was a source within the White House that claims it happened, but no one in the White House would admit to it. (naturally)
On the Michelle Obama thing, did you even read what I said in the rest of my post. It's not semantics...there is a difference between saying "proud" and "really proud". Either way why does being proud of America have to be like an unconditional love sort of thing. I think being proud of someone is NOT unconditional, it's conditional on how they have behaved. Same thing goes for America. Michelle has to defend her remarks because she is the wife of a presidential candidate, and good for her. But I would not have backed of what I said. My family has arguably been here in this country (and in SC) for generations. I'm sure there were MANY times when they were not proud of this country, does that make them anti-American, I don't think so. Like I said before, we have a very shallow belief of what patriotism is...it's more than mindless flag waving and bumper stickers.

stewart, I agree. I think people have spent a great time on these board demonizing "liberals" and Obama. It's clear they personally dislike him for whatever reasons or prior prejudices. I don't see why it needs to be personal, make it about the issues and that's that. I don't think Bush is a bad person and I certainly don't think McCain is. In general, I like McCain, always have and I'm as "lefty, liberal" as they come. However, I have gross differences with his policies and his proposed policies for the next presidential terms. I also have no reason to dislike Sarah Palin personally, and I've refrained from making personal attacks on her, but I don't think she's prepared to be vice president and I disagree with many of her political positions. The media (whether you want to call it liberal or not...I just call it ALL a circus) has made this out to be a personality contest, and many Americans rather than voting for the issues and the policies are voting for whoever they think is more "likable" or more "down to earth" I personally hate this pandering strategy. I don't want someone who is "down to earth" or and "every day man or woman" I want someone who can get the job done. Why on earth should the president of the greatest nation in the world be "average", they should be above average, that's why they are president.

"How is is that Palin has twice the elected experience of BHO and more executive expreience than BHO and Biden combined doesn't have enough expreience for the #2 job, but the least experienced of all of the candidates still has enough for the #1 job?"
I never said Palin didn't have elected experience, I said she was unprepared. There's a difference. You can talk executive experience all you want. But a mayor of a town of 5000 students just has a little more executive experience than the principal of Summerville High (not sure how many students they have now, been when I was in HS, they had almost 3000) Until she proves that she's aware and educated of the issues, I will continue to think she is unprepared. She hasn't been tested yet, her campaign has kept her shielded from the media under the guise that, "the media is unfair to her." What a clever strategy, so she doesn't have to answer any hard questions because the questions will be unfair anyways. She's been governor of Alaska for less than two years, mayor before that of said small town, council woman before that of same small home town...and before that ...undergrad, sportscaster, commercial fishing... Sorry I'm not impressed. I won't be until she's proven she has a solid handle of domestic and foreign policy issues and that she is smart and capable. Even then I will still disagree with her politics but at least I will think she would be some what capable and able to take on the task. Barack may have less "executive experience" as the pundits have spun it over and over..but you can't deny the man isn't intelligent, able to grasp the issues easily and has shown that he is able to and capable to run the country.
I also thing its hilarious (as many shows have pointed out) that Karl Rove was spinning about possible Obama VP choice Tim Kaine would be disastrous and how he would be enormously underexperienced and unprepared for VP because he was a "recent governor of less than two years" and mayor of a small town "Richmond" (population 200,000). After the Palin pick he was raving about her credentials and executive experience. That's just silly.
Time has proven again and again, that experience when it comes to presidential candidates may not necessarily be the key, but the direction they are leading this country as well as the smart and the "get done" attitude can go a long way. My boss told me a good analogy once...there are people who've been on the job for 30 years and still don't know what they are doing. Politics shouldn't be seniority based...that's why I would never argue that Palin doesn't have enough experience. Does she have the education, experience and intelligence for this job? Those questions still need to be answered.

I don't agree with you, Jimmy. Ford was a decent president, just had the cards stacked against him. Carter was a good person, didn't have a whole lot of success, but I sure wouldn't say that he was worse than Bush. Both have been really bad.

As for the Biden pick Jimmy, it was a political move. Pick someone with the credentials to back you up. The press would have a field day either way. If he picked someone as young and fresh as he is, people would say, "the whole ticket is unqualified." Let's just say Obama picked Biden for the same reason McCain picked Palin, attemptimg to silence whatever major critics are saying. Critics are saying Obama lacks "experience" and "foreign policy credentials", well Biden brings that to the table. Critics were saying McCain needed to "solidify the right-way conservative base" and "bring some youth to his campaign", Palin brings that to the table.

Uh huh Thomas so Michelle Obama saying she it's the first time she's really been proud of her country is racism and anti-american. Talk about a huge leap. And she's never said she's NOT proud of her country. She was saying it all in the context of being "really proud" of the amazing participation and turnout in the electoral process this past year.
I love how the main people who talk about "playing the race card" are the first ones to casually call someone a racist. Just admit that you have no real reason to dislike Michelle Obama. I just remembered why I had you on ignore Thomas.

I also would like Jim Webb from Virginia, he is moderate but in a way that I like moderates (fiscally conservative but also a pragmatist). He is young and also he could have attracted many that would have been sitting on the fence. I just really liked Richardson in the debates. He really seems like a smart guy.
Strategy wise Palin was a good pick. She definitely boosted the republican popularity in the Midwest. Personally, I just think she is just too socially conservative but that will work well in swing states in the midwest but could turn her off to voters in other less religious regions.
Sometimes I feel that the democrats could learn something from the republicans strategy.
RW, you are welcome to continue looking like a fool.

guided, yes at least Palin was a more "roll of the dice" pick, but I feel like her effect has been overstated this early in the game. Middle of October, we'll see where all the chips lie. I think she has solidified the Republican base, no doubt. But many of her views will turn off some people from some of the swing states. People have been traveling all over this country talking about "small town" values, as if America were still only a nation of small town. America has become considerably more urban and suburban in the past few decades, so to shove someone in our face because of their small town appeal seems to be a risky strategy. It's also risk to think that all small town are alike...I'm from a small town and I don't think she is appealing as a candidate. The small towns of Alaska are NOT like the small towns of industrial PA, or southern Florida.
Like I said, time will tell what the real impact will be. I am definitely for Obama, but even I admit he went through a honeymoon phase with the press and the public especially. Palin, as a newcomer is too, but we will see in a few weeks where this all leads when the dust settles.

………………………UNSOLICITED OPINION………………………
RW: At some point you must understand that your constant ranting will get you nowhere. Your constant gay bashing and use of pejoratives obscures any message that you are attempting to get across. You make great points on occasion but you sound like a loon. I’m sure you could care less about what I think for you admitted over the past few days that you care less about latinos or what they think. But I felt compelled to address you this afternoon. You have made yourself look like a complete idiot. No better than the left-leaning loons you rail against everyday. Please take a long hard look over your posts and if you replaced RW with Johnq, you would hardly see a difference.
Speaking of Johnq, please refer to previous paragraph. Any points he tried to make have been destroyed by his foolishness.
THOMAS1776: I have no idea what’s gotten into you. There was a time when you were able to express yourself in such a logical coherent manner. Now you seem rabid in your hatred for Obama and the left. And today, you went out of your way to be abusive and cruel in your ATTACKS against those who disagreed with you. In fact for the past couple of weeks your posts have degenerated into the drivel that RAREGAR, MOONPIE and others of their ilk would put out. (Deity knows I hate to compare ANYONE to those idiots but you’ve left me no choice!) Again, I’m sure you could care less about my opinion but I would really like to see the old Thomas again. Sane, logical, respectful and someone fun to debate with. Now you are no better than RW, JOHNQ, EARLY, MOTS and the other unmentionables.
I’m also NO fan of those who claim to represent the left/Democrats and behave just as poorly as the aforementioned posters. You’re just the other side of the same coin.
All of you HIDE behind pseudonyms and pound away at y’alls keyboards with impunity. Methinks some of y’all wouldn’t have the cojones to say what you do on this website to ANYONE’S face.

Test2007,
I copied the questions down here for you so you wouldn't have to search back for them. I read them over again and don't see where they require you to search for anything. Just provide some logic for the opinion you have on these points. They seem to ask why you believe as you do and this is a discussion of the issues. Again, I do not understand why you are not eager to answer these points and convince others why your choice is the better one. Avoiding the answer implies that you don't like the answer (IMHO).
"How does it wash that a politican who has themed his candidacy a 'change from DC politics as usual' decided to pick an entrenced DC career politician with lobbiest family members as a running mate?"
"How is is that Palin has twice the elected experience of BHO and more executive expreience than BHO and Biden combined doesn't have enough expreience for the #2 job, but the least experienced of all of the candidates still has enough for the #1 job?"
"How is it that you are so confident that BHO's brand of democrat change will be any different from the '06 democrat change in the congress? Why is a 9% favoribility rating is somehow less embarassing than a 27% favoribility rating?"

tc1, give me a break, first of all someone (ME) has already answered two of those questions, though I would argue that TEST is right to an extent. Many people are going to believe what they want about either candidate regardless of the facts. If you try to say something rational it's just like screaming into a crowd of lunatics on here.
Let's face the facts here...the P&C board is obviously NOT the place to have intelligent discourse. If you want that, I suggest you start commenting on Economist.com, where for the most part people actual engage in intellectual debate rather than devolving into propaganda based caricatures of their political views. Most people do just come on here for entertainment and sparring purposes, NOT intellectual discourse, I repeat, this is not the place for that.

Lol! SCdea, you are right I am showing my mommy creds! I think it's the ears that made me notice, oh, and the nose. But she does look a lot like Tina Fey.

If any liberal democrats haven’t gotten your notice from the DNC yet, then you may have to contact them ASP. There’s an urgent need for volunteers to get the vote out. Forget about South Carolina, your resources are needed in borderline states. Also forget the idea that the swing voters haven’t made up their minds because they have they‘re voting for McCain and Palin. We have to concentrate our efforts on the illegal aliens. If you speak a little Spanish this will help and you will be assign to La Raza. Don’t worry about the Muslim community, they are in constant communication with their leaders in the Middle East. Your efforts will be needed for the homeless, bums, drunks, drug addicts, mental ill and other assorted misfits. In states where there has been progress in getting the convicted felons to vote, the prisons and county jails will be open for you to have access to prisoners. Since we have a growing population of child molesters they will be easy to locate. Just go to Meaganslaw.com and they will have all the addresses for these people. The DNC depends on you getting the vote out. Remember these are people too and they have just as much right if not more to vote than the conservatives. Remember vote early and often.

People-we all need to listen to to as many news outlets as possible...not just the ones that appear to be leaning toward your candidate of choice.
When you hear something that either encourages or distresses you about either candidate, do not take it as fact but research the info to the extent that you can.
At least half of this back & forth tit for tat (no pun intended !) naa nanny boo boo stuff could be eliminated & we could discuss facts instead of rumor & half truths.

More hate-filled rhetoric from the so-called "caring" party.

SCdeacinNYC, I 2nd your last post.
I have found that many people on here do like to be contradicted, via another opinion or even w/ the actual truth or facts.
When they cannot bully into acquiescence, someone who has another point of view, they either escalate in the sarcastic name calling or they "pick up their marbles & go home" usually with a parting shot stating "you are not worth any of my time","your are not worth having a discussion with", or something like the ever mature " blah, blah blah" or, "YAWN".
Trying to discuss things in a mature manner here has been an eye opening experience, for the most part.
These comments do not apply to those who make great efforts to keep things civil & courteous.

Paling reminds me of the church lady from Saturday Night Live. A little hotter but the same dumb personality. I can not believe you guys are falling for John McCains cheer leader like this. She should never be president and will never make any real decisions ..it is all just a distraction from how bad McCain sucks

too many post to read. So don't know if this has been addressed. But how can Palin run the country with a down sidrom?(spelling)baby. From my understanding these children demand a lot of time and attention. Is she going to let her child suffer while she is in a time consuming public office?

REagan was the snake oil salesman in the carnival that ran through town. Left some dead, a few made some money from the carnival and the rest are left to clean the fairgrounds.
