James Island band raising money

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Members of the James Island Charter High School Band will be canvassing Saturday to raise funds.

"We're called 'The Pride of the Island,' and I think we're living up to that name. I think we're giving James Island something to be proud of," said Faye Robbins, president of JICHS Band Backers.

The band won the Walterboro Classic in 2007 and received the 2008 Outstanding Performance Award from the S.C. Band Directors Association.

Band director Neville Curtis said a slowing economy and soaring transportation costs have made fundraising a major concern for the band.

You need to open up a bank account that people can make a deposit in.

As a taxpayer, doesn't some of my local tax dollars go to local schools? I know we live in a piss-poor state but where is our state government leaders with new creative ways to build additional wealth in the state for schools?

I have two students in the JICHS band. They are an awesome group. This is my 4th year working with them. The school does provide limited funds. When you factor in transportation to functions, competition fees, equipment repairs, etc., it adds up. To iceman go to www.jichsband.com and click on the donate button. We have started using PayPal this year. You can select a student for the donation to be credited to or it will go to the general fund. Each student is responsible for raising $600, most of which is done by fundraising. SCnative, the board bought new uniforms my son's sophomore year (he's a senior now). Unfortunately, JI is more concerned with soccer than our high school. I encourage all of you to come to our next football game on the 19th and see what our band is doing. Or, check out our calendar and see us at a local band competition at Wando or West Ashley in the coming weeks. In 4A we are the smallest band, about 65 members. All of the other schools have 100 or more. But, the last two years we have placed in the top 6 at lower state and move on to the State finals. We placed 11th the last two years. That's pretty impressive when you consider there are 12 bands that compete in 4A competition for the State title and there are over 30 4A bands in the state. In addition we have received the Outstanding Performance Award from the S.C. Band Directors Association several years in a row. Please consider donating when these kids knock on your door Saturday. If we don't make it to your neighborhood and you would like to donate, please go to our website and make a donation using PayPal.

To all previous and future commenters: JICHS provides substantial support to the Pride of the Island Band; because of its charter status, I believe it now provides funding well in excess of what is allocated to other high school bands in the area. The Pride of the Island Band fully supports JICHS activities and is enthusiastic in doing so. As parents, the JICHS Band Backers Association continues to sponsor fundraisers to support the Band AND the school, and us as taxpayers, to cover expenses that you would not wish to see your tax dollars cover (housing expense for band clinic instructors for two weeks, complimentary t-shirts to the kids to wear under their uniforms, picnic cookouts as a recruitment for middle school band members, cost of alterations to the beautiful uniforms to ensure a "class act" fit, truck rental to pull trailers, drink mix and paper products for meals and beverage breaks, just to name a very few).

Iceman, thank you for being the first to jump on board and ask for a means of supporting the band. Firefighterwife has given you our website; please give generously to these kids to further their music education and excellence. We hope that James Island will be very receptive to our kids on Saturday morning; because the band is relatively small, we will not reach all neighborhoods. Please don't let that stop you; donate through our website.

SCNative, I cannot comment on what you experienced except to suggest that perhaps in the earlier Charter years, the school did not have the financial health that is currently being enjoyed. The school's support has been and is very gratifying. Please come to the Backyard Stadium on September 19 to experience the fruits of that support.
