New charges

Authorities Tuesday filed four new burglary charges against Jacoby Fields and Travis Harris, in addition to the murder and burglary charges already filed against them in connection with the Aug. 6 shooting of Deputy Dennis Compton. The three charges for burglary in the first degree and one charge for burglary in the second degree allege the two men:

--Burglarized two houses on Churchill Road in Walterboro on June 18, stealing a 12-gauge shotgun and body armor from one of the houses, and another gun from the second house. Authorities allege the 12-gauge shotgun was later used to kill Compton.

--Stole gang files and a computer keyboard from a Colleton County sheriff's substation on either Aug. 5 or Aug. 6. The break-in was discovered the same day Compton was shot.

--Burglarized a mobile home at 220 Johnnie Circle on Aug. 29, more than three weeks after Compton was shot.

WALTERBORO — One of the two men accused of killing a Colleton County sheriff's deputy told The Post and Courier on Tuesday that he didn't pull the trigger and that he was "at the wrong place at the wrong time."

Travis Javon Harris, 19, made the comments while awaiting a bond hearing on four new burglary charges. Warrants and other police documents allege that he and 18-year-old co-defendant Jacoby Fields:

--Stole a 12-gauge shotgun on June 18 that was used to kill Deputy Dennis Compton on Aug. 6.

--Stole "gang files" from a Sheriff's Office substation in Smoaks.

--Committed another burglary three weeks after they allegedly shot Compton.

Harris and Fields were charged last week with murder and first-degree burglary in the Aug. 6 shooting of Compton, who died after authorities believe he surprised the two men as they were burglarizing a house at 699 Sunflower Drive near Smoaks.

Circuit Judge R. Ferrell Cothran denied bond for both men Tuesday on the murder and first-degree burglary charges. The case is set for a grand jury Oct. 9.

Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone told Cothran that Harris and Fields have "implicated each other and themselves" in the shooting. He requested that the men be appointed separate attorneys because he intends to ask for separate trials.

The men have been held in separate detention centers in Charleston and Hampton counties and were separated Tuesday afternoon while waiting on a second bond hearing on the new burglary charges.

That was when Harris told The Post and Courier that he was inside the house in Smoaks when he heard a gunshot outside.

"I just heard it," Harris said.

"When I went outside ... I was like, 'What the f---?' "

He said he didn't get a "really good, clear look" at Compton. "I just seen he was a cop," he said.

Harris said he was deeply sorry for what happened to the deputy and sorry for putting his own family through this.

"I was at the wrong place at the wrong time, and I'm really sorry about what happened to Mr. Compton and I send my regards to his family and his children," Harris said.

Authorities said they recovered the murder weapon behind Harris' home, about six miles from where Compton was killed.

Stone said in court that Harris' criminal history includes an arrest on charges of resisting arrest and malicious injury to personal property.

Fields has convictions for simple assault, disorderly conduct and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Friends of Fields' who attended the hearing said they can't believe he could have shot Compton. They described him as mellow and easy-going.

"All I can say is, he's a good person," said Travell Green.

Colleton County Sheriff George Malone said authorities still are investigating whether either man is linked to gangs.

Harris and Fields were charged Tuesday with second-degree burglary in connection with a break-in at the Colleton County Sheriff's Office substation on Lodge Highway that was discovered the morning Compton was shot.

An incident report says gang files and a computer keyboard were stolen from the building. Warrants say both men made "self-incriminating statements" leading to the charge.

Harris' MySpace page, in which he refers to himself as "BloodyKalz," features a backdrop of "Bloods Gang Bandanas." He also writes "REPPIN DA 5 TO THE DAY I DIE."

Authorities said they have linked both men to several burglaries. During back-to-back burglaries on Churchill Road in Walterboro on June 18, authorities said, the men stole the Mossburg 12-gauge shotgun that was used to kill Compton. They also are accused of stealing a piece of military-style body armor and another gun that the victim was unable to describe.

The Sheriff's Office also swore out warrants alleging that both men burglarized a mobile home at 220 Johnnie Circle near Walterboro on Aug. 29, more than three weeks after Compton was shot.

An incident report in that case says the men stole a .22-caliber rifle and a pair of Nike sneakers from the home. A neighbor told police that she saw two men driving a white Chevrolet Impala in the area.

By Friday, authorities were executing a search warrant inside a Chevrolet Impala that Fields drove, as well as the Walterboro apartment where Fields was staying. Witnesses said they saw police recover a long gun from the Impala. Authorities said the long gun witnesses saw was not the murder weapon, but may have been one of the other guns that were stolen.

The level of actual gang activity in this and other rural areas is alarming. Don't think for a minute that it's exclusively NY and LA and other big metros... it's all over, and especially in the rural areas - Berkeley, Dorchester, and obviously Colleton. Heads up y'all, haven't seen that story in the P&C any time recently. Maybe that's on the way because of this story.

"Well, for me, as a representative for the NAACP, I take offense to RW's suggestion that we are not looking after these young boys. Why, we will help them any way that we can and that starts once they get into prison. We will put them in contact with the other people in prison that we have "helped" and ensure that they are not punked up the arse too many times before they turn 25 years old."

"And as for your comment about the flag RW, we are working diligently with our constituents within the prison system to ensure that no innocent criminal is allowed to display the flag within his/her cell. It is an abomination and travesty that our good, innocent brothers in prison must put up with that sort of bigotry and hatred."

That equates to "the MAN is keeping me down". It's all a bunch of BS. It is called PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY folks. They are to blame for their actions and no one else.

James_CC: "For the record I know you are not in love with the NAACP..."

Thank you for that disclaimer, because you saved me a whole lot of keystrokes....Lol! Everything you said is all fine and well, but again, it all equates to what I mentioned earlier. Whites did all they could to keep Blacks down for decades in this country and we preach that blacks should not blame whites for their ills (and this I agree with wholeheartedly. They didn't make me and they sure as hell will not break me). But now we are here blaming the NAACP and rap music and God knows what else for the problems that these boys and others like them got themselves into. How can that be accepted? I still say, personal responsibility is key. Oh, and parental involvement.

Riptide (anonymous) says...

ms_lady2u...

All kids growing up perceive the world around them pretty the same as any other kid. What is different from one kid to another is how they conceptualize these perceptions. When you place one kid from birth in a home with loving and nurturing parents and another kid in a home of a single mom living on welfare, with no father around, and a environment where the kid is constantly being told that he is worthless, whitey will keep you down, etc.etc. then how are they going to conceptualize the world around them other than despair. Your solution is Hillary's big government social programs. Government can not replace the family.

The only vested interest I have is to see the individuals in the black community to realize their full potential in life.

If Harris had no violent intent and was horrified that his friend shot a cop he woudve done something. His reaction wouldve been "Oh f....hell no.I want no part of this.Immediately ran to call police and tell them he was robbing a home and his friend went crazy and shot a cop."That would be the basic reaction from a criminal with no intent of phyically hurting anyone. But lets face it this guy knew his friend was armed, they boasted about their gang violence and now he's just throwing his friend under the bus-too bad that's just a figure of speech.

"With all these priors, why were these dispicable thugs out of prison?"

Why you ask?

Because our legal (not justice) system is bloated with bureaucracy and rife with corruption.

Our government in its infinite wisdom of playing the world's police officer, doctor and savior spends billions of dollars OUT of this country as opposed to shoring up our court system by providing funds for additional judges and prosecutors. Instead of building prisons here we help build prison, schools and hospitals elsewhere! Instead of putting additional cops on the streets we spend money sending our military to 'nation build' as opposed to providing for the common defense as our constitution demands.

If and I do mean IF we had a true justice system, these two fools would have still been in jail over the crap they've done previously as opposed to being home, displaying their dumb-ass thuggery on MySpace. They would be still paying the price for their earlier crimes rather than giving lame excuses to a reporter.

FOR THE RECORD, I'm a Colleton County resident and I've never voted for Malone because I feel there have been people more capable of being sheriff.

However let me now address his senseless death......In reading some of the comments, I see that some feel that the MURDERERS that MURDERED my cousin think that the color of skin had something to do with it!!!! WRONG!!! This is inexcusable in any race!! Dennis was doing his job of protecting the innocent and the way I see it these two were not innocent they were there to ROB an elderly lady...what would of happened if she had been there...? would they again have been in the wrong place at the wrong time??!! Not hardly they were there by choice, instead of working a regular job and supporting themselves like normal Americans they were out robbing and stealing from innocent people and let us not forget MURDERING an INNOCENT man that had two children that will no longer be able to run to DADDY!! A mother that will never get to celebrate holidays or birthdays with her son again!! A sister who can never hug or tell her brother she loves him again .......and why?!! well because they were "AT THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME"....IMAGINE THAT!! IF HALF THE WORLD WERE AT THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME ....WOULD THE NAACP BE SO QUICK TO JUMP AT THAT....AND TO THESE MURDERERS HOW WOULD U REACT OR FEEL IF IT WERE YOUR LAST AND ONLY SON TAKEN FROM U? AND JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED...? HOW .....EYE..FOR AN EYE....
