Cyclones blow past Hurricanes

The Post and Courier
Tuesday, September 9, 2008

First Baptist played tortoise to Porter-Gaud's hare, but unlike the fable, slow and steady didn't win the race.

Porter-Gaud's quick-strike offense and opportunistic defense helped the Cyclones pull away from the grind-it-out Hurricanes 31-0 on Monday night at Billy Smith Field.

"There were some big plays tonight and that's where we had to capitalize," said Porter-Gaud coach Ricky Tillman. "Whether it was a big play to score or a big play to set up a score, we had to keep that momentum. First Baptist had a great game plan for us, but I'm just happy our kids came out and executed."

Porter-Gaud quarterback John Dodds only threw nine passes, but he completed six for 157 yards and two touchdowns.

"First Baptist came after us, but John Dodds does a nice job of reading the defense," Tillman said.

First Baptist (0-2) relied heavily on running back Harrison Greer, who produced 133 yards on 29 carries, including 80 yards in the first half.

Porter-Gaud led 14-0 at the half thanks to big hookups in the passing game between Dodds and sophomore wide receiver Stanton Seckinger.

Dodds hit Seckinger with a 34-yard touchdown pass on the Cyclones' first possession to put Porter-Gaud ahead 7-0 with 5:33 to play in the first quarter.

Dodds connected with Seckinger again in the second quarter on a pass play that covered 31 yards and gave the Cyclones first and goal from the 1-yard line.

Two plays later, Dodds sneaked into the end zone to help give the Cyclones (1-1) a 14-0 lead with 2:42 to play in the first half.

It was all Porter-Gaud in the second half, with the Cyclones relying on superior depth to pull away from the Hurricanes, who had three second-half fumbles and a blocked punt.

"Turnovers killed us, the blocked punt killed us," said First Baptist coach Will McCombs. We just misfired at the wrong time. They're good. They've got more tradition than we have. They have more kids than we have. But I felt like the kids battled hard."

Both teams face a short turnaround after playing a game that was pushed to Monday because of Tropical Storm Hanna.

Porter-Gaud plays host to Northwoods Academy at 7:30 p.m. Friday, while First Baptist travels to Hilton Head to take on Hilton Head Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

"It's a short week and it doesn't get any easier," McCombs said. "We've got to reach down and find a little extra."
