THE EARLY COLD WAR DOCUMENTARY: 2 p.m. Charleston County Main Library, 68 Calhoun St., Charleston. Free. The library will host a six-part series of documentaries about the beginnings of the Cold War, 1917-1953. Call 805-6804.

TALMUDIC ETHICS CLASS: 7-8:15 p.m. Levin Library, College of Charleston's Jewish Studies Center, 96 Wentworth St., Charleston. Free. Rabbi Hesh Epstein will examine contemporary cases and how the Talmud, Maimonides and responsa deal with the cases' issues. AFTER-SCHOOL ADVENTURES: 3:30-6 p.m. Palmetto Islands County Park, 444 Needlerush Parkway, Mount Pleasant. $8 residents, $10 nonresidents. Ages 6-12 will enjoy an afternoon of learning basic canoe and kayak skills, then playing some paddling games. Call 795-4FUN.

KEN BURGER PROSTATE CHALLENGE: 6:30 p.m. West Ashley High School, 4060 W. Wildcat Blvd., Charleston. $25. The Roper St. Francis Cancer Center and Piggly Wiggly offer the chance to challenge Post and Courier sports editor and columnist Ken Burger in longest place kick, fastest 40-yard sprint, 50-yard chip shot and more. All proceeds benefit the Ken Burger Prostate Fund and the Roper St. Francis Foundation. Call 402-CARE.

Wednesday

PICNIC: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Alhambra Park, 131 Middle St., Mount Pleasant. Free. Parents and children ages 6 and younger are invited to a picnic with a jump castle, craft project and free drinks. Call 884-2528.

9/11 MEMORIAL CONCERT: 7 p.m. Freedom Hall, Pinewood Preparatory School, 1114 Orangeburg Road, Summerville. Free. The Summerville Community Orchestra will perform in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Call 376-0142.

Friday

NIGHT HIKE: 5:30-10 p.m. Charleston County Parks and Recreation headquarters, 861 Riverland Drive, Charleston. $12 residents, $15 nonresidents. Participants will experience a moonlight hike on the South Carolina Palmetto Trail. Pack a flashlight and a drink. Call 795-4FUN.

MOONLIGHT MIXER: 7-11 p.m. Folly Beach Fishing Pier, 101 E. Arctic Ave., Folly Beach. $8 residents, $10 nonresidents. DJ Rob Duren will play oldies and beach music while guests dance in the ocean breeze. Beverages, food and snacks will be available for purchase. Call 795-4FUN.

Saturday

FOOTBALL JAMBOREE: 8:30 a.m.-noon. Wando High School stadium, 1560 Mathis Ferry Road, Mount Pleasant. The Mount Pleasant Recreation Department will hold the annual Football Jamboree, featuring 58 football teams and the MPRD cheerleading squads. Call 856-2196.

FREE SKATEBOARDING DAY: Noon-5 p.m. Mount Pleasant Skatepark, 391 Egypt Road. Free. Guests should bring their own equipment, including a helmet and knee and elbow pads. Call 884-2528.
