Terriers too much for Bucs
SPARTANBURG — Wofford rushed for 434 yards and defeated Charleston Southern, 41-23, Saturday night. Now it's OK to look ahead to a game at South Carolina on Sept. 20. The Terriers (2-0) and their wingbone offense have a bye next week.
Charleston Southern must turn right around and get ready for another road trip. The Buccaneers opened last week with a 52-7 loss at Miami and played before a crowd of 3,817 at Gibbs Stadium because the threat of tropical storm Hanna convinced school administrators to move what was supposed to be a CSU home game.
Next week the Bucs (0-2) play at Miami of Ohio.
"Wofford's a good standard, a good bearer for us to mark ourselves against," CSU head coach Jay Mills said. "They've been where we're at and they've built it up. That's what our hopes and aspirations are, to do it the same way. I like the direction we're headed and there's no doubt in my mind that we'll get there."
Wofford quarterback Ben Widmyer has plenty of experience but is in his first season as a starter. The Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, native ran for 45 yards and completed 3 of 3 passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. Wofford backup quarterback Mitch Allen, a redshirt freshman, scored the last two TDs on runs of 29 and 42 yards.
Clemson transfer Tribble Reese, a graduate student, was 30 of 46 for 250 yards with one TD pass and one interception in his second start for CSU.
Wofford, picked third in the Southern Conference preseason coaches poll, opened last week with a 38-21 home victory over Presbyterian after falling behind 14-0.
The Terriers gave South Carolina a scare at Columbia in 2006, driving to the Gamecocks' 10-yard line late in a 27-20 loss.
"You know going in there's a mismatch," Wofford head coach Mike Ayers said of the South Carolina game. "But that being said, two years ago we went in and we did what we were supposed to do and made it a great game. We had a chance at the end but didn't get it done. They don't need any more motivation than two years ago when they played us."
CSU was picked fifth among six teams in the Big South Conference preseason poll. But the Bucs got off to a 10-0 lead, scored on their first three possessions and led 20-19 in the third quarter.
CSU lost leading receiver Dee Brown to a knee injury in the first half. X-rays were negative.
"We just can't come through with big plays," Brown said. "But I think we'll go home and make the adjustments."
