The Wando volleyball team is ready to start the season. The Warriors, who reached the Class AAAA state championship last fall, were scheduled to open the regular season with a match against Bishop England and were slated to participate in the West Ashley Invitational last week, But Tropical Storm Hanna forced postponements.

"After a month of practice, and what happened because of Hanna, we're chomping at the bit," Wando coach Alexis Glover said. "We're ready to go."

The Warriors will get a chance to spend some of that energy this week. They play region foes Berkeley and Goose Creek on Tuesday and non-conference opponents Summerville and Colleton County on Thursday. The Warriors are trying to reschedule the Bishop England match for Wednesday, and the West Ashley tournament has been rescheduled for this weekend.

"It's going to be a challenge," Glover said of her team's busy week. "But that's want we want."

The Warriors also want a state championship after reaching the title match for the first time since 2003. The Warriors put up a valiant effort, bull Hillcrest repeated as state champs with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 victory.

"Hillcrest was an all-veteran team and we were half juniors and half seniors," Glover said. "We were extremely close. If the ball had fallen our way, or if we hadn't missed some serves, it could have been closer."

The Warriors have a polished nucleus returning for '08, headed up by state player of the year Christina Glover, the coach's daughter and a University of South Carolina commit. She didn't even play volleyball until Liz Chabra moved to the Lowcountry and the two became friends. Glover decided to play because Chabra played volleyball. The rest is history.

Glover was the state player of the year last fall and was The Post and Courier's player of the year. Chabra was all-Lowcountry. They will be counted on this fall as will senior Liz Yuhas.

Jordan Hancock, Shelby Netherton, Renee Streisel and Nicole Greig will have key roles this season.

"Last year was a good season, and losing in the championship was a tough way to end it," coach Glover said. "With every loss, you learn a lesson, so we are very motivated. "They want to get back there. But that's our goal every year."

Players of week

The Post and Courier will not announce its football players of the week until Wednesday because Tropical Storm Hanna forced Charleston County schools to play Monday night. Coaches can nominate players until noon Tuesday by e-mail at pbowman@postandcourier.com or by phone at 937-5592.

Also, The Game Day Page, which runs on Fridays, didn't appear last week since there were no local games on Friday. The page will run this week and will include statistical leaders. Coaches should fax stats to 937-5592 or e-mail them to pbowman@postandcourier.com
