Mount Pleasant quietly rides out Hanna

MOUNT PLEASANT — It was so wet in the town that frogs could be seen jumping on roads.

On Saturday morning, the only apparent damage from Tropical Storm Hanna was an upside down speed limit sign on the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge southbound. There was standing water in the U.S. 17 median near Johnnie Dodds Boulevard and in a few other locations on the highway. A patch of flooding on Long Point Road at Coaxum Street was visible but posed no serious hazard.

Power had been restored Saturday morning to subdivisions on Mathis Ferry Road and at the Queensborough Shopping Center on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard. Workers at the Circle K Store at Bowman Road and Mathis Ferry Road were taking down sheets of aluminum placed over windows.

The town's emergency operations center closed at midnight Friday. "It's just not happening," said Police Chief Harry Sewell.

Winds on the Ravenel Bridge gusted to 25 miles per hour at times, but never came close to a level where police would have considered closing the bridge. Sgt. W.P. Carter worked until 1 a.m. Saturday supervising traffic officers. The crew had little to do because it was like a ghost town. On Saturday morning, though, things were getting back to normal as people walked on the Ravenel Bridge and neighborhood streets.
