Authorities release name of man shot by deputies
The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office has released the name of a man shot by deputies at a house near S.C. Highway 176 between Summerville and Moncks Corner on Thursday night.
Horace Dale Knapp, 42, was recovering from bullet wounds at a local hospital today, a Sheriff's Office press release says. Word on his condition was not available, though authorities reported earlier that he was awake and talking after the incident.
The release gives this account of events:
Deputies went to a domestic dispute at Knapp's home on 547 Christy Lane around 8 p.m. He came out of the front door with a rifle and refused several times to put it down.
Knapp yelled obscenities and finally raised the rifle and pointed it toward the deputies.
Sheriff Wayne DeWitt asked the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate and placed the deputies on paid administrative leave, standard steps in an officer-involved shooting.
A SLED criminal records check shows that Knapp has past convictions stemming from arrests for driving under suspension in 1985, driving under the influence in 1986, another DUI in 1987 and malicious injury to property in 1991.
