Special Events
PARENT-TOT PICNIC: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 10 at Alhambra Park. Ages 6 and under. Grab your picnic baskets and blankets and head to the park for a fun-filled picnic with MPRD. Children will enjoy a jump castle, a unique craft project and free drinks. Rain date: Sept. 17. Free event.
FOOTBALL JAMBOREE: 8:30 a.m. Sept. 13 at Wando High School football stadium. A kickoff tournament for MPRD's fall 2008 youth football teams. Spectators are welcome.
FREE SKATEBOARDING DAY: Noon-5 p.m. Sept. 13 at Mount Pleasant Skatepark (behind the R.L. Jones Center). Try SkateLite Pro Ramps for free. Participants must bring their own skateboard and safety equipment (helmet, knee pads and elbow pads) and have a current, signed waiver on file. All skatepark rules and regulations apply. Free event.
FOURTH ANNUAL HALF RUBBER WORLD SERIES: 9 a.m. Sept. 20 at Park West Recreation Complex. A half-rubber tournament for teams of 3-4 players of all experience levels. Prizes will be awarded and spectators are welcome. Registration deadline is Sept. 17. Call 884-2528. Tournament registration fee: $20 per person.
MOUNT PLEASANT FALL INVITATIONAL USSSA TOURNAMENT: Sept. 19-21 at Park West Recreation Complex, R.L. Jones Center and Wando South. This USSSA-sanctioned baseball tournament is hosted by the Mount Pleasant Diamond Warriors and is open to age groups 10U-18U. Registration is open one week prior to the tournament and is available at www.diamondwarriors.org.
Youth classes, programs
BATON TWIRLING: Sept. 16-May 12, Tuesdays from 4:30-5:15 p.m. Park West. Youth ages 5-9 are invited to learn beginning twirling skills while incorporating dance skills to increase flexibility and coordination. This course is instructed by former Clemson University Tiger twirler and varsity cheerleader Wendy Arnsdorff. Batons are available for purchase from instructor. $348/residents, $362/nonresident/year.
KINDERMUSIK ABC MUSIC AND ME: Sept. 15-May 18, Mondays, 4:30-5 p.m. G.M. Darby Building. Developed for ages 3-5 years, ABC Music and Me introduces children to singing, creative movement, playing instruments, listening, imaginative play and more. Parent does not participate in this class. $204/resident, $218/nonresident/26-week session +$40 materials fee.
PIANO: Weekly 30-minute private lessons can be arranged with instructors. Darby Building/Jones Center. $85 resident/$99 nonresidents for four weekly 30-minute lessons. If there are five weeks in the month, an additional $21.25 is required. Call 849-2061 for a list of instructors.
