Tootie's Sidewalk Cafe and Ice Cream Parlor

Tootie's Sidewalk Cafe and Ice Cream Parlor is a restaurant in the same mold as Ye Olde Fashioned, if Ye Olde was done up in pastels and tropical tones and claimed a mascot named Tootie the Toucan.

Like Ye Olde, Tootie's makes sandwiches and salads, burgers and hot dogs, chicken tenders and hot wings, soup, salads and ice cream.

For starters, the Tootie burger ($5.99) is a half-pound behemoth jammed with lettuce, tomato, mustard, ketchup, onions, pepper jack cheese and bacon. Just for good measure, it's topped with a layer of crinkle-cut French fries. Bully for you if you can finish it.

The sandwich offerings are more than 18 deep, including a BLT, chicken club with fried or grilled chicken, reuben with 1000 Island or mustard sauce, corned beef, roast beef, egg salad and bacon, patty melt and fried egg with ham or bacon.

The hot wings, while not very hot, are decently fried and crispy. A dozen costs $8.99, eight for $5.49. A really good bet might be the chicken platter: chicken tenders, hot wings, fries and onion rings for $6.99. Chicken tenders, alone, run $5.40; a basket with fries is $6.50.

Hot dogs come with chili, cheese and sauerkraut.

The Tootie sausage dog ($3.59) is another colossal meal made with mustard, ketchup, chili, cheese, sauerkraut, slaw, relish and onions.

Your kids will love the Breyers brand ice cream, shakes, floats and sundaes. A glance at the toppings — hot fudge, bananas, marshmallows, Reese's peanut butter cups, caramel and gummy bears — is tempting enough.

I will tell you one thing for sure about this place the employees are wonderful. Unlike the employees at Ye Olde in West Ashley. The food is pretty much the same, but the way you are treated makes the difference. I hope the word gets out about this place. I live maybe 2 blocks from Ye Olde but I now drive to Tooties.
