Freelance graphic designer finds freedom in his art form

Artist and graphic designer Tim Hussey relaxes in his studio on Upper King Street.
In a brightly sunlit studio on Upper King Street, framed magazine covers crowd the wall over Tim Hussey's desk. Nationally and internationally known publications such as GQ, Outside, Steppe and Garden & Gun keep company with smaller, regional periodicals such as Marquee Mountain South and the College of Charleston magazine.
Hussey, 38, is a freelance graphic designer, painter and photographer.
The Charleston native has worked as an art director for each of the publications he proudly displays. He's had more than 16 years of experience creating page layouts, editorial illustrations and magazine covers.
"As you can see, the names go from big to small," he said, referring to the eclectic assortment of titles that decorate his resume.
Some designers might balk at moving from big-name media to regional publications, but the mix suits Hussey just fine.
While working as a full-time magazine designer in New York City, Hussey, who has never held one office job for more than a year at a time, spent a lot of time behind a desk. Now, as a freelancer, he has a daily schedule that offers more artistic freedom.
"I like to avoid formal meetings at all costs," he said.
Instead, Hussey focuses on honing his three crafts. While he still designs the glossy pages of various magazines, Hussey also is a serious painter and fine art photographer. His work has hung in galleries all over the country, from Santa Fe to Manhattan.
Most of his paintings are abstract mixed-media works on paper or canvas. Hussey describes them as "frenetic." His photography portfolio features portraits and nudes.
Any given afternoon might find Hussey painting, snapping photos or using his design skills. It's this flexibility that makes him happy with his occupation.
"I could design magazines from Iceland or travel anywhere for an art residency," he said. "I absolutely love the freedom."
Content with a steady stream of work, Hussey hardly goes out of his way to drum up business. Clients usually hear about him through word of mouth.
"My office looks like a condemned building. I don't really advertise," he quips. "I had 1,000 business cards printed up, and I think I handed out four."
He may be laid-back about advertising, but Hussey is still deeply passionate about his work.
"I consciously chose a career that would not be over at the end of the day. I wanted a job that would become my lifestyle," he said. Each day, Hussey does work that inspires him. Luckily for him, it also pays the bills.
