SUMMERVILLE — Berkeley County sheriff's deputies shot a man late tonight during a domestic dispute, authorities said.

The man's condition was unknown, but he was alive and talking before being taken to a local hospital, said Dan Moon, sheriff's spokesman.

Deputies responded to a domestic dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend about 8:30 p.m. on Christy Lane off U.S. Highway 176, Moon said. He said the wounded man lived at the home and was armed with a gun.

"The officers did everything they could, but they had to shoot him," Moon said.

Deputies were not injured, he said.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
