No lottery ticket, no lottery money

Lucky is holding a winning $10,000 lottery ticket. Unlucky is having it stolen and getting arrested for an outstanding warrant when you report the alleged theft to police.

A man recently contacted the Charleston County Sheriff's Office claiming that his winning scratch-off lottery ticket was stolen three years ago.

He said he tried to claim his prize at a North Charleston store in 2005, but the clerk locked him inside and wouldn't let him leave unless he relinquished the ticket.

He left and called North Charleston police, who arrested him because he was wanted.

He served 18 months in prison, got out in 2006 and discovered the clerk no longer worked at the store.

He said he called the sheriff's office because he'd recently seen the clerk again.

Bicyclist manages to steal 4 tires

Charleston County sheriff's deputies don't know how a man riding a bicycle made off with four tires from a Honda Accord parked at a bank on St. Andrews Boulevard.

Bank video showed the cyclist parking his bike against a fence, a report said.

The man removed the lug nuts from three of the car's wheels and left.

A couple of hours later, a plastic bag was placed over the exterior camera and, when the bag was removed, the four tires were gone.

Heroin is stuck to driver's license

A driver who claimed his medicine was stuck to his driver's license was busted when a Charleston police officer recognized the small wax envelope as a commonplace container for narcotics.

The envelope actually contained heroin, a report stated.

The officer stopped the man's car because he turned without signaling and the car's validation sticker wasn't showing. When the driver realized the wax envelope was stuck to the license he'd just handed the officer, the driver immediately declared, "That's my medicine!" the officer reported.

Police arrested the driver on a drug charge and towed his car.

Naked man sleeps on bus stop bench

A Charleston officer said passers-by had "gathered in shock" around a naked man sitting on a downtown bus stop bench.

The man's clothes were on the ground and he had fallen into a deep sleep when the officer arrived. The man struggled to answer the officer's questions and seemed disoriented. He "was not concerned that he was completely naked" and didn't understand why the officer had approached him, a report stated.

Once fully dressed, he was booked into the jail on a charge of disorderly conduct.

Man charged in property damage

A man who said he was trying to get into a friend's vehicle in the parking lot of a Charleston strip club was arrested after a witness saw him break out a truck window with his elbow.

The witness told Charleston police he saw the man walking up to vehicles before he broke the truck window.

The owner of the truck that was damaged said he didn't know the man, who was charged with damaging property.

Crab fishermen argue over pots

A fisherman called the Charleston County Sheriff's Office to deal with a fellow fisherman who got crabby.

The man told deputies he was at a Charleston boat landing when he was accused of stealing another fisherman's crab pot.

The man said he didn't steal anyone's crab pot because he has his own.

The man who made the accusation was uncooperative and didn't want to speak to deputies.

Deputies chase, then tow, vehicle

Charleston County sheriff's deputies knew a car hadn't been stolen, as the owner reported, so they towed it after a chase at about 70 mph in Lincolnville.

The deputy caught up to the speeding car, but said the driver/owner jumped out. Deputies went to the registered owner's residence but didn't find the man.

They towed the car, which hadn't been registered since 2000 and was not insured.

The owner later tried to get his mother to report the car stolen to the sheriff's office, but she refused when told about the law and penalties for filing a false police report.

She had her son file the report instead.

Deputies said the owner's license is suspended for drug violations.

These news items were taken from selected incident reports from the Charleston Police Department and Charleston County Sheriff's Office.
