Hanna halts high school football in Charleston; Berkeley, Dorchester games still on
Some games scheduled for Thursday night
The threat of Tropical Storm Hanna has caused the Charleston County School District to cancel all extracurricular activities for tonight, Thursday and Friday. That means no high school football teams from Charleston County will play this weekend, but some teams in Berkeley and Dorchestern counties are scheduled to play games Thursday night.
Dave Spurlock, who oversees high school athletics for Charleston, said Monday is the optimal day for practices and games to resume because playing fields could be in bad shape Saturday because of potentially heavy rain.
The games will go on in the Berkeley County School District, according to Charlie Davis, who oversees athletics for the district. All of the football games have been moved to Thursday.
Summerville plays at Goose Creek, Cross plays at Cane Bay and Sumter plays at Stratford. Those games will start at 7 p.m. Timberland travels to Scott’s Branch for a 7:30 p.m. game. The status of the Berkeley at Bluffton game will be decided this afternoon.

Almost laughable, Charleston County. 3 days out and the projected path is above Myrtle Beach. 99 out of 100 of these East Coast storms turn just as Hanna is doing. Kudos to Charlie Davis for using common sense and letting Berkeley County save face. Oh, I take that back .... not 'almost' laughable because I just re-read the first paragraph and I apparently missed this the first time: activities cancelled TONIGHT (Wed.)? Not from around here, are you Mr. Spurlock?

Redfish, have you experienced that 1 out of 100 ? Cancelling tonight is questionable but with the travel involved and prep that needs to be made you don't take chances. Hopefully it wont matter but we just don't know do we? Wait, what am I saying ? A dangerous hurricane to hit Charleston.... not a chance, that hasn't happend since,,ummmm

Been here all my life, mom - 50+ years. Watched the one Cat 3+ that didn't turn (Hugo) with my own eyes. Cancelling events 3 days out because of weather that at most was going to be feeder bands of a Cat 1 is funny. Still laughing.

Charleston County School District should have re-schedule the football games for Thursday like the other counties.

So what if the football fields are in bad shape; its football

I thought they canceled a little premature as well.
