Coliseum will shelter pets

In the event of a mandatory evacuation, people who want to take their pets to a hurricane shelter should go to the North Charleston Coliseum, officials said Wednesday.

The Charleston Animal Society on Remount Road and Pet Helpers on Folly Road will not accept animals, officials said.

Carol Linville, president and founder of Pet Helpers adoption center, said pet owners should not expect to be able to show up at the organization's headquarters on Folly Road and leave their pets. "It's a nightmare to even think about all these people showing up at our door. We're struggling to figure out where to put staff who are coming in with their pets," said Linville said.

Charles Karesh, president of the Charleston Animal Society board of directors, said people who bring their pets to the Remount Road shelter will be turned away. "We are not a boarding house," he said.

Barbara Coker, a receptionist at the coliseum, confirmed that the facility would accept people and pets in the event of a mandatory evacuation.
