Berkeley County seeks citizen input into its future

The Post and Courier
Wednesday, September 3, 2008

MONCKS CORNER — Berkeley County wants to know your vision of its future.

With its population of just over 150,000 expected to grow by nearly 40 percent in the next 22 years, county officials say it's crucial that they start planning how to protect existing neighborhoods while creating new ones.

They're asking for the public to help by taking part in a series of community meetings this fall to revise the county's comprehensive plan, which counties use to help guide everything from growth and development to the use of natural resources. The first meeting is Sept. 11 in Ladson.

"The county has to plan for at least 60,000 more residents by 2030," said Jeff Tyndall, director of planning and zoning. "In addition to residences, job needs, civic needs and commercial needs have to be taken into consideration."

Tyndall said he and the county Planning Commission want to hear residents' views on different kinds of housing, especially different types of affordable housing such as apartments and "mother-in-law suites." Tyndall has a visual presentation planned that will help gauge residents' interest in different types of houses.

Five meetings

The Berkeley County Planning Department is having five fall meetings to solicit input for the county's comprehensive plan. Each meeting starts at 6 p.m. Below are the dates and locations:

Sept. 11: College Park Middle, 713 College Park Road, Ladson.

Sept. 18: Timberland High School, 1418 Gravel Hill Road, St. Stephen.

Sept. 25: The Keith School Museum, 1509 Clements Ferry Road, Charleston.

Oct. 2: Cross High School, 1293 Old Highway 6, Cross.

Oct. 16: Pimlico Civic Club, 1603 Pimlico Blvd., M. Corner.

He said turnout is important because the input he and the commission receive will go into the plan.

"I want to stress to the public that we want as much input as possible," he said.

About the only thing they don't want to hear are complaints about traffic congestion.

"We don't want to talk about transportation so much because we know that's a problem already and we know what we have to do," Tyndall said.

The entire process is being carried out by the Planning Commission, county staff and the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments.

There will be five more meetings in the spring that will lean more toward discussion of the findings, and then a public hearing by July of 2009.

Berkeley County wants to know my vision its future???

1. Highest per capita mobile home to illegal immigrant ratio in South Carolina.

2. Voted "Worst roads in the state" by AAA

3. Sets the record for most cars daily on a 2 lane road. The other 9 spots on the top ten list are in Mt Pleasant.

4. After finding out Chicago has more crooked politicans, the county begins to import Chicago politicans.

5. Never admits the shame Google laid on them as they used Bylthwood and the other city in NC vs each other to get better deals, when they were going to build on all 3 all along.

6. The State newspaper finds Google wanted cheap power and water, not the incentives that the county offered like "deer hunting", "there is a Walmart in Moncks Corner" and "millions of dollars plus free land".

7. In the future the county will reach the goal of having half of its residents becoming literate by 2010 after the last 500 non-criminals in North Charleston reach the point where they must move, and the only place they can afford after selling their NC home is Goose Creek.

8. The new county motto "Largest county in arces in the state, the fewest trees of any county".

9. That new motto replaces the current one "Building codes... no sir, we just cash checks here".

10. An overflow of Yankees from Mt. Pleasant causes a riot at the Moncks Corner Sonic and a "new" civil war breaks out.

Berkeley County is nothing more than redneck suburbia, with Wal-Mart and Applebees culture (yes generic as it comes), and not that different from other generic suburban counties anywhere else in the South. Yep, you guys can have it.

I for one actually was born and raised in BC so I can say that illegal immigration has NADA to do with its current problems. Maybe they should have asked for these suggestions 15-20 years ago and there wouldn't be any of these problems.

Ugh - I hate the argument that the war in Iraq somehow protected us from a war on our soil. I think that is a very lame argument and generally comes from making excuses instead of admitting that the whole reason we are over there is bunk.

Also, before 9/11 there was another terrorist bombing. I call it the forgotten attack. Remember Oklahoma city??? We forget so easily. Tim mcveigh is dead but is the ideology he lived by dead? no. If you don't learn from your mistakes you are doomed to repeat them. Point blank. With all of our attention to bin laden who is somewhere in the mountains wonder if we're looking for the next tim mcveigh too?

Let's face it, BC needs to curb development. Anyone who has lived there in the past 20 years or so, know that the town went from a mostly rural haven to an explosion of "sub-divisions" and "developments." Obviously the local government has not been able to keep up with the growth in the county.

ALSO, I am one of those people that thinks the county government in Berkeley county has way too much power, leading to ample corruption and lots of bureaucracy. Let the city incorporate and have some say over how their areas are developed (or not developed). The last thing we need to become is surburban sprawl space. It's affecting traffic, infrastructure and because of the growth they are having to fund about three more brand new schools. It's completely ridiculous.

Jane, this is off-topic...yet again. However, I firmly believe in deposing of evil dictators, I just wish we weren't so pick and choosey about the ones we chose to dispose in full-out war. But at the very least, I'm glad we chose one whom we helped empower because of our previous beef with Iran.

Sorry I don't subscribe to the "let's assuage whatever dictator is in power presently to suit our own needs" foreign policy of the Cold War (and even post-Cold War periods) because all it leaves us is cleaning up the messes that WE helped them create and leaving us vulnerable and not able to influence and stamp out the real bad guys. Saddam was a horrible leader and did some evil things to his own people. But he was no real threat to America, he was presiding over a weakened nation, that was already impoverished under his rule and accompanying international economic sanctions. We got bad intelligence, even the neo cons have admitted that. But once we were in, instead of our "realist foreign policy reasons" we changed it to some sort of "humanitarian mission." (As if the United States had ever cared about military humanitarian intervention). Then we pretended that Hussein was somehow linked to Al-qaeda, a group who both idelogically and politically was opposed to the entire regime there and Hussein himself. Finally this administration ran out of excuses, and for better or worse we are in a country that needs us as much it despises us.

I hope one day Iraq will be a better country for us disposing of Saddam, tearing it apart and helping to plunge it momentarily into a civil war by our very presence there. But I can't wholeheartedly say it was the right decision. We've gotten ourselves into a quagmire and we can't leave now or stay forever. But if you think that the reasons we were there were anything other than based on bad intelligence, a lie and an ignorant assumption by many Americans alike in support of this war, you've got it completely WRONG.

Jane - Illegals, Obama and muslims are not the cause of every american problem. Sorry but that is the truth. A lot of the issues going on in this country are issues that people have been predicting for decades now. Playing the blame game doesn't solve it. The illegals aren't going anywhere. Sorry to disappoint but that is the TRUTH. I don't care what any of these politicians say.

Jane - unlike you i don't get my news from one source (in your case, propaganda). I research until i know the sides and then form an opinion. Unfortunately I have been a witness to some of your outlandish comments so i know i am asking way too much from you. I also don't form my opinions based on party lines like some folks.

SCdeacinNYC (anonymous) says...

jane for you to suggest that illegal immigration has anything to do with the problems of BC, shows limited scope...even for you.

While the illegal immigration brigade on this board, you included, seems to want to blame illegals for ALL of this nation's/state's problems, I really doubt the over population problem is attributed to them, as it is to the numerous people attempting to pile up into the various new real estate developments spring up in all parts of the county. I'm sorry but the people I see that are piling in the various developments along Clements Ferry Road, Daniel Island and the Cainhoy Area in general are NOT illegal immigrants.

Again, I blame the county government. Ever since the days of Rozier, development has gone unbridled and unrestrained and now we have a country government that is unable to handle the problem itself. It seems that in the next decade the county will spend roughly 200 million (this is just my estimate, with infrastructure, roads and schools) to compensate for this new growth. This is ridiculous in its own right.

ColdBeer,
My comment that Berkeley County is nothing more than redneck suburbia is more an observation than a generalization (like observing the amount of NASCAR stickers there or confederate flags on pickup trucks that populate Berkeley), by stating a suburb is redneck does not imply that everyone that lives there is redneck (which would be a generalization). Yet, in my opinion, Berkeley County is lame, generic, and lacks character and that has little to do with immigrants, but like you said, each to there own. As it is my opinion, it is based on what I qualify as being important to me, not others. For some, Berkeley is just what they want in a place to live. While you might not agree or like my opinion, I am sure that there are few that agree with it. My opinion has little to do with it being a valid fact, but more with how I personally feel about Berkeley County.

Jane I'm going to stay on topic......after this post. Other than saying what you spout is propoganda....so disagreeing with our government's and politician's decisions is "emboldening the enemy" give me a break. Sounds like you got that straight out of the right wing nut job handbook you quote so often.

When I say humanitarian intervention, I mean intervening in a country using our military for humanitarian reasons. Like invading a country because they have a horrible dictator that needs to be overthrown, because genocide is going on, et cetera. Arguably we haven't done that since Kosovo. NOT sending supplies over after a natural disaster. Rebuilding Europe was not a military operation, and calling rebuilding japan after we dropped nuclear bombs there military humanitarian intervention is offensive and stupid. It fits into exactly what I said before about rebuilding a country after destroying it.

This is a classic crazy right-wing propaganda tool, saying that someone disagreeing with the war or our administration handling the war is insulting our troops. I have tons of friends in the military and more than a handful that are serving or did serve in Iraq. What's insulting to them is the cookie cutter description you just gave of the situation when it is so much more politically and militarily complex than that.

Lastly, I've been on the operationiraqichildren website many times. Yes many of the children love us in IRAQ. But the situation is a little more complicated than that. To say that because children love the American soldiers we're creating a generation of kids in love with America is simplistic and ridiculous. Those children will grow up in a world either STILL occupied by American soldiers and be resentful, or they will be left in a not yet peaceful or rebuilt Iraq and be resentful. In other words, this war is a "danged if you do, danged if you don't" quagmire.

I wish my friend's blog was still around for you to read, it was the most honest insight into a soldier's experience in iraq, but of course the military shut it down eventually. He neither pandered to pro or anti war people but just told the truth of the situation...which is that war is a lot more complicated than people would like you to think.

I would like to say to GuidedbyStewart. I suppose you can call me a redneck. Doesn't matter to me. All I know is when I want to go fishing, swimming, skiing, camping, boating, hunting, 4wheeling. mudbogging, or just relax by the lake or river on a nice afternoon I can do so and feel the nice breeze and cleaner air.
I don't have to hear horns, traffic, sirens,or guns blasting all day & night long.
I hope you don't speak for the majority...because they have moved from Charleston. You will find more people here to help and bring aid to their neighbor. Who are you to condemn people you don't even know. Oh that's right you must be from the snobby crowd on the other side of the track, who hasn't worked for a dime. One whose father knows nothing about making a living by plowing fields, riding horses, tractors and going to church for something besides to be seen by the elite of the community.
All I know... is we have peace and quiet here... where I am from, and we hope to keep it that way.
Berkeley County does need change, we need parks and recreation for our young upcoming children and programs happening all the time. For all, not just the RICH as Stewart.
Go to Aiken, and check out the parks and programs they have going. A nice town with keeping kids out of trouble. This happens everywhere but we can curb it early.
Don't let comunnities build on top of each other as Charleston. Put in place their must be at least 2 miles between each new subdivision, leave us trees, and streams. No more bulding around the lake and river. Keep the area free of clutter of one house on top of another as Charleston. It will be less accidents for our future. It needs to stay open where it can be seen. As a great place to live with this REDNECK!

Generally it is those who do not, did not, and/or could not serve in our military that make blanket statements regarding an American citizen's RIGHT to dissent. Personally I find Jane's assertion "you owe our military an apology" VERY INSULTING. I served in the military during Desert Shield/Storm and myself and many others were against how the administration handled the situation. If Bush the elder had done what was right and not politically expedient Saddam would have been dispatched with and ANOTHER reason would have had to been found to invade Iraq.

JANE should I apologize to myself for dissenting?

EXACTLY!

Jane, your statements are patently simplistic and just like those on the LEFT you refuse to acknowledge the very REAL issues that face us due to our intervention in Iraq. Whereas liberals refuse the acknowledge the good done by our military there, you and your fellow über-conservatives refuse to acknowledge the very REAL problems caused by our presence there and instead of doing so ATTACK anyone who disagrees with you by saying they aren't patriotic.

Jane: "There is nothing crazy in saying once we send our men and women into harms way it is time to STAND BEHIND OUR TROOPS"

What does that mean?

Should we blindly accept EVERYTHING our government says because men and women in uniform are dying?

Please spare me. Soldiers die. You know why? Because they CHOOSE to put on that uniform, follow orders and do what most of you out there couldn't or wouldn't. I call them heroes and I salute them. I thank them in many different ways and do what I can to show my appreciation.

However...

I don't support them BECAUSE of my government.

I support them IN SPITE of my government.

If I disagree with WHY our soldiers are leaving families, getting wounded or killed DOES NOT in any way negate my all encompassing LOVE & RESPECT for them.

Jane, try not to get your ideology confused with TRUE PATRIOTISM.

If you are as much as a student of history as you claim, they you would know that the basis for the USA even being created was dissent from the British government.

The reason so many of us before, now and in the future wear the uniform is to support the ideals of freedom. Freedom to speak one's mind, freedom to think differently from others, and certainly freedom to disagree with our government on issues as important war.

Listen VERY carefully. Ooops! I meant READ very carefully and use the very useful tool of reading comprehension.

I'm my own woman. The opinions I express are my very own. Unlike you I do not espouse only one ideology and then get upset if someone disagrees with me. I only get upset if someone insults me or my intelligence and right now you are insulting me. I doubt you care about that.

I quoted Test because I happened to agree with him on those select points.

You are the one who deviated from the subject matter and I decided to offer my opinions on what you posted.

And yes you did question a poster patriotism, you wrote:" I would think every person wearing the uniform would find your statement offensive. You owe them an apology."

Also you proved my point about Bush the Elder doing what was politically expedient and not what was needed. "By the way, didn't we not go all the way to Baghdad during the first Gulf War because we listened to the UN? Of course, if we had gone in during the first Gulf War, people would have complained about that as well."

The only complaint from me is that we DIDN'T do what needed to be done.

Jane, for future reference when TRYING to debate me, please do ACTUAL research, go back over previous posts in the article AND remember who you are dealing with.

Where on this board does ANYONE say that they don't support the troops? Outside of one or two fools such as Harry Reid NO ONE in congress disrespected the troops.

You are constantly attaching dissent to patriotism and support of military personnel.

With all due fairness, it is possible to vote for something based on information at hand and then realize later, with additional information, that the previous decision was in error.

We all occasionally change our opinions.

And for the record, yes, there were Democrats AND Republicans who grandstanded before cameras claiming to approve or disapprove funding for the troops.

For all of your so-called research, you failed to realize that the troops were going to be funded regardless. Not one soldier was going to lose a paycheck or not receive food, water or equipment. BOTH sides whined and complained in order to pander to their constituent base.

Apparently you do not comprehend what I'm trying to say, so I will end this conversation with you on this note:

Only the fringe lunatics are NOT respecting or supporting the troops.

Do NOT lump all Democrats into some sort of convenient category that you can rail against with your 'follow-the-leader-blindly' ideology.
