Voters to have their say on Sunday alcohol sales

SUMMERVILLE — Should Dorchester County allow Sunday alcohol sales?

That's one of the questions up for a vote Tuesday.

Sunday beer sales going before voters, published 08/20/08

Dorchester County voters will see the question near the end of the ballot, under the heading "Local Question." It asks whether to authorize the Department of Revenue to issue permits to sell alcoholic drinks for on-site consumption and beer and wine for takeout "without regard to the days or hours."

An explanation follows the question. A "yes" vote allows businesses and nonprofit groups to get the permits. A "no" vote does not allow the sales on Sunday.

The question is on the ballot because store owners in Dorchester County have been complaining about losing business to neighboring jurisdictions that allow Sunday beer sales, several councilmen said when they passed the ordinance authorizing the referendum.

Sunday alcohol sales are allowed everywhere in Charleston County, as well as in all of North Charleston and Summerville. They're allowed in Berkeley County only in Goose Creek and on Daniel Island.

B - Double E - Double R - U - N!

The lack of Sunday sales does nothing but cost the counties revenue. Hopefully, Berkeley County will soon follow suit.

This is a no brainer - why would you not sell it on Sunday? Separation of church and state - right? Why does this apply to prayer but not to alcohol? How do you get the wine for communion if you can't get it on Sunday? What happens when you buy it on Saturday, get all liquored up on Saturday and then you can't make it to church on Sunday? Maybe it should be outlawed on Saturday? It's all ridiculous. I should be able to buy a drink on Sunday if I want to - and any other day of the week.

I used to work at a grocery store in high school and we couldn't sell beer before noon on Sunday. I guess the county wanted it sold, just not before they got out of church:o)

Here we go again, legislating morality.

You can buy a lotto ticket on Sunday …

You can beat up your spouse on Sunday…

You can have sex on Sunday…

You can buy cigarettes on Sunday …

You can swear, lie, cheat or steal on Sunday…

You can lie in your bed and NOT go to church on Sunday…

You can do ALL these things and more and yet can’t buy beer on Sunday.

I can’t be the ONLY one who sees the irony in this.

E. Fig. Exactly. I always thought this was stupid, as you can buy your alcohol on Saturday, and be drunk first thing Sunday morning.
When we were teenagers we could buy alcohol easier on Sunday than any other day of the week. You just had to know which country store to go to, or know where the bootleggers lived. It was also the one day of the week where skin color made no difference. The only color that mattered was green. LOL

RTC: I've always respected those who held steadfast to their faith. I've no problem with those who want to think or live differently than me.

As long as it doesn't interfere with MY right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

And yes, if I want to buy a case of Heinie on Sunday in order to pursue happiness then dammit I should be able to!!!

I think this will pass with no problems. It's a ridiculous law. All it does is force people to stock up on Saturday or drive a little up the road on Sunday. The law seems based on a silly assumption that people wont drive around the block to get their drink on.

We need to allow beer sales to 19 year olds so they can play pool in honkytonks and will not binge drink and wake up neighbors during binge parties.
