Long lines already
Lowcountry voters crowd the polls to cast absentee ballots
MONCKS CORNER — Bobby Harrelson dropped by the election offices here late Tuesday morning to vote absentee, but he saw a line stretching down the side of the building and decided to return at 8 a.m. Wednesday instead.
The Post and Courier
Charleston County residents cast absentee ballots on Tuesday at the Election Warehouse in North Charleston.
Even after the office opened an hour later, he still faced a long wait.
"I was hoping to beat the crowd," he said, but by 9:20 a.m. there were still a few dozen voters ahead of him in line.
Similar scenes are playing out across South Carolina this week, as both Republicans and Democrats urge their supporters to vote absentee, if at all possible, and as a growing number of other voters heed that advice in hopes of avoiding even longer lines on Election Day.
It's also a national phenomenon, as states that allow early voting have seen unprecedented waves at the polls. Already, more than 1.2 million of Georgia's 5.6 million registered voters, more than 21 percent, have cast ballots. More than 1.4 million have voted either in person or by mail in North Carolina, with registered Democrats there holding a 2-1 edge in turnout.
Almost a quarter of all registered voters already have voted in North Carolina, Texas, Nevada and Colorado, according to CNN.com.
Election coverage
Complete election coverage from The Post and Courier.
South Carolina doesn't allow early voting, but it does allow voters to vote absentee for any one of 17 different reasons, including that they are over 65 years old, physically disabled, or working or out of town on Election Day.
While last week's absentee lines often were 30 minutes or less, the crowds have picked up this week. Wilmot Fraser of Charleston said he tried to vote absentee Monday afternoon "thinking that I would beat the crowd. I was shocked. It was a long line of people. There must have been 500 people in that building."
He said he returned at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday but still waited for about 90 minutes.
Voting absentee
Lowcountry residents voting absentee may go to their county election office during business hours this week and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday (9 a.m. to noon in Berkeley). Officials say the lines are consistently long and are asking voters to be patient. Anyone in line by the office's closing time will be allowed to vote, even if office workers must remain late.
Absentee voters must sign a form saying they cannot vote on Election Day because of one of 17 possible reasons, including that they're over 65, physically disabled, will be out of town or working. For a full list, see scvotes.org and click under "voters" and then "voting."
The following are the office locations and contacts.
BERKELEY COUNTY: 6 Belt Drive in Moncks Corner, 723-3800 Ext. 4056 or 719-4056.
CHARLESTON COUNTY: 4367 Headquarters Road in North Charleston, 744-8683.
DORCHESTER COUNTY: 201 Johnston St., Waggoner Building, St. George, 563-0071 or 832-0132.
As of Wednesday, Charleston County had issued more absentee ballots, both by mail and in person, than any other county in the state, according to the State Election Commission. Thirteen percent of registered county voters have gotten absentee ballots, much higher than in Berkeley and Dorchester counties, which also are seeing record absentee turnouts.
Much of the early voting push is being driven by campaigns that have urged their volunteers and supporters to vote early.
As he stumped in North Charleston, South Carolina 6th District U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn urged Democrats to vote absentee.
"Let's win that race first," he said. "I know everybody in your church over 65 has voted, right? I'm going to come check Sunday morning."
Not only has South Carolina seen a record 2.5 million residents on the voting rolls, an increase of 310,000 so far this year, but it's already issued more than 240,000 absentee ballots, about 33 percent more than the previous record set in 2004. And in-person absentee voting is expected to remain heavy today, Friday, Saturday morning and Monday, when it will end at 5 p.m. Voters have until 7 p.m. Tuesday to return their absentee ballot if they received one by mail.
The waits in Charleston County averaged 90 minutes Wednesday and occasionally topped the two-hour mark, and Charleston County Board of Elections and Voter Registration Director Marilyn Bowers had no tips for avoiding the lines.
"It will just continue to get heavier," she said. "The wait is the wait, and it's going to be this way on Election Day, too, so they need to carve out some time in their schedule that they can spend waiting."
Joseph Debney, executive director of Dorchester County Elections and Voter Registration, said the waits in St. George were about 45 to 60 minutes, "but now they're stretching into an hour and a half or even longer."
His advice to absentee voters? "Be patient."
While some may have tried to vote absentee to avoid long lines, that no longer makes sense, at least in Berkeley County.
"They're going to wait here just as long as they're going to wait on Election Day," said Wanda Farley, director of Berkeley County Elections and Voter Registration.
Dr. Marcus Schaefer of Goose Creek said he has voted in Milwaukee, Virginia, Indiana, San Diego and Los Angeles but never has seen anything like the two-hour-long line at Berkeley's election office Tuesday. "It never lets up. It's all day long."
"It's good news for America. You know how low our voting turnout has been," he said. "This election is being determined before Election Day."

The lines on Tuesday will be long, and the weather may not be as nice as this week.
But somehow voting early just doesn't have the same
"part of the community feel".

Now, sit back, and let someone really do the job!

In Canada, which has a shorter, simpler electoral system, $10 per voter is spent on their national elections which is why they don't have registration problems, long lines and problems counting the vote. In the United States we spend between $2 and $4 per voter depending on the state. You get what you pay for.
Clearly we need more machines for early voting in South Carolina. I voted three weeks ago, with no waiting, for Obama. Yesterday's wait was about an hour.
The Republicans now have an entrenched opposition to allowing other people to vote. Waiting until election day to vote is taking a big risk. I simply see no proof that the system will hold together and function on Tuesday if the Republican party is doing everything possible to prevent people from voting and forcing them to vote a provisional ballot if they try. Your much safer voting with the professional poll managers and clerks at the County election commission where you have time to fix registration problems if you need to by getting the proper ID, checking information on the states computers and other things which may not be working on election day.
I'm traveling to Florida to serve as an Attorney Poll Watcher for Obama. There will be attorney's doing voter protection here in Charleston County. People determined to prevent people from voting need to take a very long, hard look at the civil and criminal laws that conspiring to prevent Americans from voting will subject them to. Lying, making threats or attempting to frighten people from voting may sound like a lot of right wing fun on talk radio, but it's your house, your bank account and your freedom that will be at risk if you get sucked into it.
I assure you, no elected official will admit to saying he or she told you to do it when you're sued or indicted. They won't be holding fundraisers for your legal fees either. They'll just pretend then knew nothing about it.
Americans have the right to vote, every citizen in good standing. That's the law. People who break those laws will be punished.

wjhamilton3; Your an attorney? This makes you an officer of the court and as such it is your moral and ethical duty to uphold the law. You can start by rereading the constitution, as opposed to rewriting it, as most of your chosen profession has opted to do.
This line from your post says it all about you and your inability to learn from history.
"but it's your house, your bank account and your freedom that will be at risk if you get sucked into it."
Just what do you think will happen to homes, bank accounts, and freedom, when a Marxist like Obama assumes power, with a socially radical, democratically controlled congress aiding him in his goal of turning this country into the next failed socialist experiment?
What is this phony perceived threat of voter intimidation you and other agitators rant about? I voted yesterday in a line that was predominately Obama robots drug in from all over the county.
The only thing intimidating was the length of the line, coupled with the obsevation that so many of the "voters" required hands on assistance to complete the voting process, which of course made the wait in line that much longer.
One parting thought, Canada( voting system extraordinaire) has many attributes that appeal to segments of our society, like those that flee to her bosom at the first sign of impending military involvement by the United States.
This country can easily afford to donate some attorneys to Canada. Doing pro bono work for US military deserters would be gratifying for sure!

Why are we spending 10 billion a month in Iraq when they have a surplus of over 70 billion dollars while our country is economic chaos? McCain wants to continue that. McCain even voted against a bill that would give my fellow military men and women more educational opportunities. Your ignorant and misguided philosophies would have our country continue to go down the drain.
Bush has failed and destroyed this country with his ignorance, incompetence and arrogrance. Clinton left a surplus, we now have a huge deficit. There doesn't seem to be a problem with voter intimidation at the County Election commission where they are doing the absentee voting. It's professionally administrated and under close observation by both parties. Both campaigns are operating transportation programs to get mostly older voters to the polls early to vote.
The concern is what will happen on election day, when hundreds of precincts are open, phone lines are jammed and the capacity of the system to respond to problems breaks down. Republican efforts to challenge working class and minority voters generate long lines. It's much safer to vote early if you want to be sure your vote counts.
In SC, we register by Social Security Number. It's entered right at the top of the form. The clerks key that in first, which calls up any previous registration. One social security number per person, coded for citizenship to match one name. After the social security number is verified, either a new registration is created or the old one is updated. At the same time the registration is transmitted to a national clearing house so any outstanding registrations elsewhere can be deactivated. Though SC often disappoints and the office was understaffed, they did a pretty good job.
I registered over 150 new or updated voters and was proud to do so. Several have shown me their registration cards. I'm sure most of the people here don't believe those people should be allowed to vote. The constitution of the United States says they have the right to. Over 300 thousand new voters have been registered in SC for this election. That is something a decent community would be proud of.

Anyone standing in line at 7 pm should be allowed to vote. I wouldn't cut it that close, but anyone arriving in time is supposed to be allowed to wait until they can vote. In some places in the US, voting had to continue until 10 pm to accommodate everyone.
Part of the problem is the tendency to load up the ballot with complex referendums and initiatives, often poorly worded ones. The three on the ballot here are hardly models of clarity. They have sheets to hand out to people standing in line so they can read them in advance. The law says they can only contain the actual wording on the ballot.

Voter fraud? Both sides are knee deep in it. Pointing fingers and screeching otherwise is part and parcel of the state of our nation. It says nothing of the bigotry, racist attitudes here in wild and wonder South Carolina. Must have something to do with the emphasis they place on education.

Voter fraud occurs on both sides. Unfortunately, it's kept under wraps with lotsa money and blackmail IMO. There are groups/officials on both side that'll do everything to manipulate and cheat to get their way. When people won't speak up against it, so it becomes mainstream and actually expected. Until we the voter exercise our power, it'll continue. We don't need term limits, we the voters can do that ourselves.
I see monitoring elections is something we do in far off countries, not here. That's scary, 3rd world type of scary that we have reached that level or so it seems.
I'm not voting for either candidate. Both are so close that it's hard to tell the difference. McC voted down the new GI Bill, voted for the bailout, picked Palin(Why I ask again?) If leaving SC solves the problem we should be in good shape shortly. Go ask the graduating class of Wando High School, the area's best general admission public high school, how many of them want to stay in SC? Try doing it with the Honor Students?
One of my friends packed up and left last week, a liberal who owned a software programming company he tried to bring here five years ago. He couldn't find the talent he needed locally and his employees didn't want to locate here. He stayed for several years, telecommuting and traveling (the company operates in the US, Canada, and Europe, until he finally decided the area wouldn't be going anywhere. A very conservative friend moved to NC a month ago for identical reasons. These two men had opposite political beliefs, but neither thought the Lowcountry would every provide the opportunities, talent and culture to make real wealth creation here possible. Obviously real estate development won't be doing that again for a very long time.
They were both very good friends and helped on many community efforts. Without them, we can't dream of doing the things we used to in the community.
We need brains, talent, capital and real jobs. What we're going to get is cheap tourism jobs, retired people who run out of money and a real estate industry which has run out of credit and land.

Too bad your 19 year old daughter has to be influenced by your socialist bias. She may end up living in a reincarnation of the old Soviet Union and you will have been part of the blame for her slavish existence.
Shame on you.

Yird,
If a man who is supported by mostly people who can only afford $86 if they go to the pawn shop or a title loan is about to defeat your candidate, then what does that say about you and the rest of your party. Pretty horrible, don't you think? I'm done with you. I could tell from your first post that you were racist, that's why I responded to you. You tried to keep it under the radar, but when you corner someone that has very little intelligence, sooner or later their true colors come out. You ran out of words like most ignorant people do, and you went to what you know best, name calling. Call him all the names you want, but if things don't change over the next few days, please put Mr. President in front of whatever name you choose to call him next Tuesday Nov. 4th.

Yird, you must be a Fox News junkie...it's so apparent. Hey, even our local Fox news affiliates here on our local radio channels are biased for McCain. What I've done is found news channels where people aren't screaming at each other, and spouting lies that have been debunked, then...horror of horror's, I check the facts.
As for my daughter, she has not been influenced by me, and I know that this will shock you, but she knows how to use fact-check too!!
Please do not insult me by suggesting that Fox News is unbiased. You know that they are so pro-McCain that it is disgusting to watch. My advice to you is change the channel. Find a trust-worthy news outlet that has both sides of a story, and you might also want to try using the internet to do a little research.

Okay all you caring, civic minded liberals,
please name one liberal/socialist policy or program that has not been a total failure.
War on drugs?
War on poverty?
Social security?
Medicare and Medicaid? Might be a few for starters.
Oh, and lets not forget the wonderful program to put everyone in an "affordable home!
I reckon it's "mean spirited" to ask something so challenging of those so used to being unchallenged.

FortDorchesterMom- Since you said you don't normally watch Fox News I'll tell you a few things. Sean Hannity is a republican through and through and makes no bones about it. The show Hannity & Colmes features Sean(the big time republican)and Alan Colmes(the big time liberal). Fair and balanced. If they have someone on they make it very clear on which political side they are on. There is no secrecy about it. They always have both sides of the view. If they don't they will even say for example...we asked so and so to come on and they refused. I've seen Fox rail on Mccain. The other media is so damn Pro Bama it makes anyone else look right leaning.

Sean Hannity insights violence? Please give me an example. I'm being serious. I know he raises money for charity and does a lot for our military. You are 110% correct that if you catch his radio show, it's all his republican views which are far right.

Not one response. They are quick with rhetoric, democrap talking points, and silly accusations of racism etc. but pin them downa and they become muted.

Attack you??? That's not possible.
The polls close at 8PM, and as you surely already know, there is no way the guards are going to let anyone in to see you in the psychiatric clinic after hours.

Evil, FailedDorchesterMom suggested I spend some time on the internet and do a little research.
That's funny because I not only have done much of that, and she obviously has not, but I have read a number of books highlighting the plight of citizens living under socialist/communist domination.
She with all her knowledge of liberal successes should have already set me straight as she shot holes in my accusation that all liberal programs end in failure.
Are not liberals a puzzling bunch?

I'm on record as saying way back in February of 2007 that Obama would be the next president.
The country then needed a fresh face, as the fuel prices climbed, the need came for a messiah, with the collapse of the financial services sector we needed a savior.
Just as England, needed Churchill, Russia Stalin, and France Napoleon.
But after each of these chosen ones lead their country it was over, they fell from grace and the throne of world power.

GetSerious; You answered everything wrong as expected. The moronic war on poverty was the brainchild of one of your heroes. Lyndon Johnson started that screw up in 1965or6.
Stick to your liberal talking points, they may be wrong, but at least you got them down right.

For all of you conservatives who decry foul about the poor people of this country receiving crumbs and continue to spout ignorant rhetoric that Barack wants to give more freebies to the poor (EVEN THOUGH HE HAS CONSISTENTLY SAID HE WANTS TO HELP THE MIDDLE CLASS), be it known, the republicans actually started the EIC (Earned Income Credit), which gives money to the poor, some paying no taxes at all.
WANT TO HEAR SOME TRUTH and not rhetoric or spin? The earned income tax credit was enacted by Gerald Ford and then re-enacted and expanded in 1986 by yours truly, Ronald Reagan. The man did have some compassion for the poor.
EVIL and friends please look it up.
