Congresswoman to speak locally
Her great-grandfather was a runaway slave who came to Washington in the 1850s. She was the first woman to chair the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, an appointment she received from President Carter. For decades, she has championed equal rights for blacks and women.

U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, an influential Democrat who represents the District of Columbia, will be the guest speaker Friday at the 24th annual Freedom Fund Banquet of the North Charleston branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Norton has engaged in friendly sparring matches with Charleston native Stephen Colbert on his Comedy Central show "The Colbert Report." In an appearance on the program, she discussed her endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee. "He will be your president and he will be my president, and isn't that just dandy?" Norton told Colbert. "I chose the best person," she said, adding that Obama will be "a president who would fit this moment."
On Wednesday, she continued her support and urged Obama backers to remain engaged and not assume that victory is imminent because of poll numbers.
"The greatest risk to Barack is that Governor Sarah Palin has greatly energized the formidable right wing and evangelical base, and that base has beaten us time and again in presidential and Senate elections,"

U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton will be the guest speaker at 7 p.m. Friday at the North Charleston NAACP's 24th annual Freedom Fund Banquet at the Sheraton Convention Center, North Charleston. Tickets are available at 225-6086.
Norton said in a statement released by her communications director, Sonsyrea Montgomery. "Obama should be much further ahead than he is, considering the almost unprecedented unpopularity of George Bush's eight years and the economic crisis hitting every group of Americans."
In the 110th Congress, 20 of Norton's bills were signed into law by the president, including legislation affecting the District's economy, health care and education.
She is ranked 19th "most influential" and 16th in "legislative power" among the 440 House members by an outside organization, Power Rankings. She achieved the high rankings despite the fact that as a District representative she is allowed to vote in committee but not on the House floor.
As a law professor at Georgetown University, Norton has written widely on civil rights and labor issues.
She is a nine-term congresswoman. In her first term, she helped the District government obtain $300 million in new federal aid. She is an advocate of statehood for the District. She secured seats on three House committees that greatly affect the District's economy, and she was the only first-year legislator invited on a congressional fact-finding mission to the Middle East following the Gulf War.
Her early experience of racial discrimination while growing up in Washington, shaped her beliefs. In 1949, when she was 12 years old, Norton watched a protest outside of a department store.
An activist was picketing the store because blacks were not allowed to use store bathrooms, although they were allowed to buy clothes there.

So she is a lawyer who writes on race, civil rights and labor issues! Obviously a socialist! Labor groups, unions and the like are socialist agenda groups that have no place in the USA! And, what is this ridiculous thing that there are 440 members of the House! There are legally only 435! And, how can she or the others have committee assignments if they are not legally authorized by the Constitution??!! Someone should challege this stupidity in the Supreme Court!

Quote from article: She is a nine-term congresswoman. In her first term, she helped the District government obtain $300 million in new federal aid.
With that kind of money from taxpayers through out the country being poured in that rat hole called Washington DC and after nine terms of milking the taxpayers one would think it would be a show case for a liberal utopia.
Even after the second amendment ruling, the District of Columbia still will not allow a home owner to possess a handgun to defend life, family and property. With the illegal aliens, felons, and dead people voting it wouldn't surprise me Barack Obama becomes our next President.

"The greatest risk to Barack is that Governor Sarah Palin has greatly energized the formidable right wing and evangelical base, and that base has beaten us time and again in presidential and Senate elections,"
So waking up the evangelicals is a high risk to Obama?
So what is wrong with being evangelical? Is this proponent of equality saying that she does not care to have people that have a strong adherence to the words of the bible as part of this election so Obama can win handily?
Norton further states: "Obama should be much further ahead than he is, considering the almost unprecedented unpopularity of George Bush's eight years and the economic crisis hitting every group of Americans."
Perhaps the real reason Obama cannot seal the deal is he has no talking points that actually say what his plan is. Perhaps people are also looking ahead to National Security and foreign diplomacy. It's not all about economics. This country has seen worse in the 1920's and the 1970's. This country survived those times and will survive these.
The only thing this Independent has heard from Obama is: (and he repeats it over and over)
1. McCain has voted 90% of time with Bush.
2. I plan to give 95% of Americans a tax break (40% of which pay no taxes he has not answered what is their involvement in a tax break would be is this welfare? Then say it is!)
3. McCain has voted 90% of time with Bush.
4. I plan to have 1 trillion in new spending projects to help people (Obama has yet to say where the money will come from for the new expenditures)
5. McCain has voted 90% of time with Bush.
6. I plan to give 95% of America tax breaks
He has given McCain opening after opening to pull even.
His rhetoric is the same since day one with no real answers and hands off interview policy for the last 3 weeks. The middle class Americans are not stupid and will not buy into unanswered questions. It is not the evangelicals Obama should worry about; it is the independents. The same ones who see him spend millions to become President. The same ones have already seen him lie to the people about public money and reform of political spending! The same one who hears him claim to have not seen radical hate preaching yet sat in the pew twice a month for twenty years! (Maybe he slept through the sermons!) The same ones who heard him say 'spread the wealth'. He has so much going for him, but refuses tell the people what they really want to hear. His actual plans for everything he proposes.
When McCain passes Obama Tuesday night, he can look in the mirror and thank himself for refusing to answer what millions wanted to hear What is Obama's real plan?

What are some "red state" issues that aren't addressed because ideological "feces" gets in the way? S.C.(I mean the stroke belt of the U.S.) gets the backburner treatment when it comes to health concerns. Strokes along w/hypertension, obesity, diabetes, etc, falls under HEALTHCARE. Next, 7.3% unemployment rate, plants and factories closing and cutting jobs in-state, and consistently ranking in the "bottom 10 in the U.S." in avg median household income, falls under ECONOMY. Next, the #1 state in regards to assault(what's up w/all the domestic abuse in the "bible belt"?),and being recognized as the 4th most dangerous state in the country, falls under CRIME. Last but not least(especially after reading a lot of these "bassackwards" posts), is EDUCATION. Standardized test scores? Graduation rates? Teacher Pay?? Nevermind, you get the drift. Issues like these are what people care about, not who Obama's preacher was, whether or not he's wearing a flag lapel pin, or what Bill Ayers was doing when Obama was deciding between "hamburgers or hotdogs" for lunch, when he was in elementary school 40 years ago?? Hey, I guess as long as Charleston keeps winning that "politest city in America" award, then all is good w/the dumbed down constituency in the "dirty south"??

Dear Ms. Norton,
As a Charlestonian that travels weekly to DC and and now sitting across the river from the cesspool also known as southeast DC (at least for a few more hours before I go to the airport), you should take the advice of one Bill Cosby and not make excuses for bad behavior and the lack of personal responsibility. Your "district" has the highest crime rate, highest dropout rate and yet has more District employees than the State of Maryland.
Tell the NAACP that they should do things to better themselves, like providing scholarships to college or job training, not buying commercials and advertisements saying how sorry we should feel for you. While I do not agree with much politically with Senator Obama, I am impressed that he is a self-made man--not one who was asking for (or benefitting from) handouts and preferential treatment. This is what you should emphasize in your speech, not that the lemmings in DC re-elect you to a do-nothing position that sounds impressive but really, as your licence plate says, "Taxation without Representation", is not.

OK, for my opinion.....It is ironic that all of the before mentioned topics I disagree with.
I am not for the fairness doctrine, but Fox News does put a major spin on the news and then has the audacity to state that they are fair and balanced. To me that is just a bold faced lie.
I also disagree with the Supreme Court decision on property rights, but we should have laws on property responsibility that handle blight issues.
I am also pro second amendment, but there are many democrats, especially in the south that are very pro second amendment. There are many things that I disagree with the democrats about, but there is probably less than that of the republicans, but then again government is run by people and people are not perfect. What is scary is a person that believes everything a particular party stands for like many on this board.
I feel that we can learn allot from many of the European countries. What many of you conservatives spin as a "redistribution of the wealth" (as if wealth is this static concept that does not change) where I see that it is more like investing into our country's future. I will be the first one to tell you that I am against giving government handouts to people that do not work and contribute to society. Yet, one of the great things about the US is that it is the land of opportunity. This means if you work hard to better yourself, you have the opportunity to become financially mobile and increase your standard of living. I went through the public school system, went to a state supported college paid for with government subsidized loans. Though it took hard work, I bettered my financial situation from the previous one partly from my own hard work, but also through help of the government. I doubt that I would have been able to do this without the governments help. From this, I am not the only one that benefits, but if our state is more educated, high paying jobs will come our way, and in the long term, we benefit from this investment. Many people have benefited from this same process. So, that is my two cents worth!

They may have stop the military machines but the ideas of taking something that belongs to you haven't. I can understand you being beholding to the government for giving you an education. I never received a college education:no big deal I made it in life without one. For my kids I started putting money away for them to receive a college education the day they were born. Now your asking me to pay for other parents kids because they choose to have big screen TV instead of putting that money away for their kids?
Barack Obama has a half brother in Kenya that makes no more than a couple of dollars a month. Barack sponsored a Global Poverty Act to take money from me and give to people in the UN and god only knows what will happen to that money. If Barack is so caring, how come he doesn't help out his half brother? I think the real reason is that he wants to see my money help his brother. Welfare is not the answer especially after the trillions of dollars we spend on the war on poverty in this country.

My problem is crackerjack and RW get thrown off but spanky gets to say whatever he pleases. I dislike the selective manner the P&C chooses to 'chastise' us posters.
Either let EVERYTHING stay or let NOTHING stay

It is sad newt that you just don't get me. Especially since you feel qualified to "tell me about myself"
And frankly that's not my problem.

My criticism is with the P&C and not necessarily with you.
I very rarely if ever agree with the likes of RW, Jane, CrackerJack, MrPretty or even you. However I find it disingenuous for the P&C delete distasteful comments of one group of people and not do so with others.
Whether you agree or not, your posts are on occasion vicious and borderline violent in nature which makes you no better & no worse than the others.
With that said, I'm advocating fairness for all. I truly believe that the P&C should either scrub all offensive posts or leave them all alone.
Soooooo:
You can take my explanation with a grain of salt or better yet you can just kiss my ass.
Either way I'm done with your asinine self.
BTW I'm a Republican?!?!
Please! Both the Dems and the Repubs are shells of what they used to be and I would rather NEVER vote again rather than be aligned with any of those weak, socialistic, budget-busting, bible-thumping pseudo-patriotic Political Parties.

eyf,
Though your point is valid, personally I wish you would let the subject of spankers, and newts since "they are the only sane ones left", comments alone. They showcase the democrat base so it helps those who don't like either party currently, indicating at least reasonable logical ability, a basis to decide on.
BTW This is not sarcasm

Amen eyfig! I feel the exact same way. Thats why I questioned what crackerjack posted earlier. Spanker can post whatever he wants, whenever he wants. Others get their comments removed or booted.

I am among the liberatrian ranks as well. Both democartas and republicans are out of control. What we have allowed our politicians (through perpetual reelection) is to creat a monster of a government. It is too big. Too all-encompassing. Too expensive.

cracker,
I would have to disagree. I do not think that people hate the truth. I think that, first of all, the truth can be as varied as the perspectives on this board. What people hate is to be insulted. There are many ways of imparting one's own truths without being offensive. But, we get it. You don't care. That's fine. But you can stop explaining yourself, now. You're simply not such an enigma; just a crude person who clearly lacks the wit to engage in intelligent discourse. Happy -- or disgruntled, rather -- posting to you.

"misplaced" you just describe Obama's preacher. You know hate who ever he tells you to hate. Hey I grew up southern baptist and never once heard a racist comment, not once. Can Obama say that? You know agree or disagree doesn't make you a racist one way or the other. Is that the only argument you and spankerass have that anyone that disagrees with your views is a racist? I agree some of CJ's comments need to be toned down but so do yours. Just shows people next election there will be a 3rd party. I for one can't take the extremes on either side.

As long as people fear not having their vote count, 3rd or Independent parties will never thrive in this nation.
It is my opinion that most Americans are NOT willing or able to knuckle down and suffer through bad times in order to get to the good times.
What I mean by that is they're afraid to vote 3rd party because they feel the undesirable candidate(s) would win.
While that may be true initially, it would only take 2 -3 major/national elections before Independent Party candidates would make a huge difference in local, state and national elections.
So keep on being afraid American voters. Keep on sticking your collective heads in the sand.
Keep on doing what you've been doing expecting different results.
You've seen what that's gotten you:

So she is a lawyer who writes on race, civil rights and labor issues! Obviously a socialist! Labor groups, unions and the like are socialist agenda groups that have no place in the USA!
Sounds like you just described Obama.
I'm ready for a new league of black politicians, ones that don't bring up the past from 158 years ago but, seems that's all they got for now.
Could you image the repercussion if a white guest speaker presented to an all black audience that the white man the would probably get elected would be "just dandy"?
It goes on and on and on and on
If I am not mistaking, this have happen over and over again, how many black president have we elected? Zero!!!
So how many white males have spoken to black group? All!!!

I think the liberal mindset is the opposite of these words found in the Declaration of Independence "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness".
The liberal socialist mindset is: Death, (abortion) bondage (government dependence) and the Pursuit of Misery.
As we have all witness in these socialist countries, it is this Pursuit of Misery that scares me about these people.
Misery, this is a interesting concept; I guess the country is living high on the hogs since your right-wing friends have rob us blind.

Even if obama was able to steal enough votes and become the president he has an even bigger problem to face.
It wouldn't take that long for his supporters to realize he was lying to them all along. Make promises to everyone knowing all long he had no intent to try to keep them.

Doesn't that lady know there is an NAACP boycott of South Carolina? She should cancel her trip. Doesn't she know that it is not enough, according to the NAACP, to not have the Rebel flag taken off the dome as they originally wanted but to have it taken off of statehouse grounds? Someone should remind her of this. Now, where is Barack's birth certificate?
