Keep Graham in Senate

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

Republican Lindsey Graham, in a single term, has established himself as a major figure in the U.S. Senate. He has been both a persuasive proponent of conservative causes and a pragmatic legislator adept at crafting bipartisan compromises. He has clearly earned your support for re-election.

His four terms as the congressman from South Carolina's 3rd District prepared him well for the Senate. He has demonstrated a zeal for taking on divisive problems and a talent for finding common ground on solutions.

Along with his close friend, GOP presidential nominee John McCain, Sen. Graham was an early and brave critic of U.S. missteps in the post-invasion occupation of Iraq. Back when the idea of sending more U.S. troops there was unpopular, he insisted that a "surge" in our forces was required. The surge's success confirmed his judgment.

As an attorney and an Air Force Reserves colonel assigned to the Judge Advocates General, Sen. Graham brings valuable expertise to shaping U.S. policy on enemy combatants. He endured the wrath of many conservatives when he became a driving force behind the bipartisan "Gang of 14" agreement on judicial appointments — a deal that should enhance GOP input on such nominations if Democrats win the White House and strengthen their majority in the Senate next week.

He riled lots of conservatives by supporting comprehensive reform on illegal immigration. He supported a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, but accepted the public demand for tighter border security as a prerequisite for reform. He has long sounded the alarm over the fiscal challenges facing Social Security and Medicare. He takes the threat of man-made climate change seriously and advocates expanding nuclear-powered electricity to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.

Despite his bipartisan achievements, Sen. Graham has been a reliable conservative voice — and vote — in the Senate. And he has been a steady and strong supporter of America's anti-terror efforts, from military missions abroad to port security at home.

He offers an ambitious program if re-elected: "My promise is to use the first term of the next president to lay the groundwork for entitlement reform, energy independence, tax reform and spending controls, and to give our military the support they need and build the alliances we need."

Sen. Graham has earned voters' support for a second term.
