Brown, Ketner race stirs clash over cash

First Congressional District candidates Henry Brown and Linda Ketner are keeping the airwaves at a steady hum with their television ads, but their battle expanded to other fronts this week.

South Carolina GOP chairman Katon Dawson wrote Ketner a letter demanding that she return $54,000 in political action committee contributions, saying that she made a pledge not to take any.

"Failure to keep your campaign promise and refund these contributions would be proof-positive that you will say and do anything to buy a seat in Congress," he said.

Ketner said she made no such pledge. She said Dawson is referring to a Project Vote Smart questionnaire that someone — she doesn't know who — filled out on her behalf.

She also noted her PAC contributions are but a fraction of Brown's, whose campaign had listed $234,400 as of Oct. 15, according to the Federal Election Commission.

Brown, Ketner bring out heavy artillery in latest ads, published 10/23/08

"They're trying to divert people in the 1st District from the things that matter," she said. "People need to stop putting up with this in politics."

Ketner appeared Tuesday at a Campaign for Change rally in North Charleston along with her fellow Democratic office seeker, 6th District Rep. James Clyburn, former S.C. Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum and actress Phylicia Rashad, a star of the "Cosby Show."

"We're going to reclaim our government and we're going to make it work again," Ketner told the crowd of about 150 supporters at Trident Technical College. Clyburn, who seldom campaigns much against his South Carolina colleagues, asked the crowd to back Ketner.

"(The pundits) are saying South Carolina is going to stay (Republican) red, but you know what? I feel something in the air in South Carolina," Clyburn said. "We can do it."

Rashad said she was advised as a drama student to avoid public discussion of religion and politics, and she said she normally takes that advice. "Normally. But lately, this ain't been normal," she said. "It just hasn't been normal."

Meanwhile, the National Rifle Association announced it would endorse Brown. The association's victory fund chairman, Chris Cox, called Brown "a steadfast supporter of our Second Amendment rights" and "a great friend to gun owners."

It's a sad day, but it's time for Brown to go.

Brown is like an old rusty pickup. You hate to part with it but, it won't start, it leaks oil all over the driveway and your neighbors complain that it is an eyesore.

I hate the idea to turning congress over to the democrats but the republican party is in the process of imploding and it's old goats like Brown, Stevens and Larry Craig that have to be cut loose if the party is going to survive.

Unless we cut out the dead wood, perverts, pandering crooks and trucks that won't start there will be no future for the GOP.

Please vote the old goat out to pasture.

While agree that it's time for Brown to go, Ketner is even worse. There is no way I could vote for her as she's just too liberal in her viewpoints. There are no other candidate running for this position. Brown gets my vote.

Same here ColdBud. It is also time to understand what a veto proof democratic congress means to this country. For those that don't it means that even if a republican has the guts to fight it won't matter. The last time that happened was Jimmy Carter. Also even if Ketner were not of the liberal persuasion if she went against the democrat party she would not have even the little power that a freshman normally has. No matter how bitter the taste consider what your vote will contribute to the future.

Coldbud and tc1 you are correct a vote for Ketner is waving the white flag. But even if Brown holds his seat, Collins of Maine, Dole of North and in all 7 senate and 11 house seats are gone. The news is all sad and scary.

But the GOP has been out of touch since the first Bush.

Brown helped this district secure funding for the Arthur Ravenel Bridge with his relationships on the house and senate transportation committees. He also helped renourish Folly Beach twice. Without him, this would not have happened. Think about it: no bridge, no beach. And if he were not there working for this, there's no chance we get any money today due to the mess Wall Street & liberal Democrats have put us in. No its very simple for me: Brown trumps Ketner. Brown also secured funding for MUSC research that was Federal money that would go somewhere to some district. Unfortunately, thats the way the game is played. Or we can sit back and say: "no more earmarks" (less than 1/10 of 1 per cent of the budget) and let that money go to Kansas or California. I support Brown because he knows how to play the game and get funding for needed projects. I wish the system were different, but his seniority (8 yrs I think) and his ability to work the floor has and will be invaluable. And he can reach across the aisle as shown by his votes and general good demeanor with Clyburn and others. So next time you drive the Cuzway or go to Folly Beach, thank Brown. He got the job done.

The only way I can give her any credibility is if she was running as an independent. Since she's on the democrat ticket and she is beholding to the DNC, I seriously doubt she can be an independent or a blue dog. She also knows, that she is running in conservative district and she needs to be under the radar on some conservative issues. That's where her Orwellian newspeak, doublethink or the modern usage of doublespeak needs to kick in and fine tune her message to convince voters that she is the real deal, plus I think she likes that retirement system that congress has for its members. It's an carrot that is hard to resist.

Henry Brown is emblematic of what's wrong with this country's politics. Crooked and self-serving is not what we need more of. This country is on a serious downward spiral and will continue in that direction unless we have dramatic change. Posted by LocalHero on October 29, 2008 at 8:31 a.m.: Hoping that they truly represent a new way of doing things.

Just curious, are you basing that hope on specific issues that are important to you, and the candidate's stance on those issues, or are you just simply "hoping"? I've said it before and I'll say it again: Change is not good unless it is good change. We can put a crack whore in the White House and you can bet we'd have change. I'd doubt many of us would be very happy with that change though.

While I think that Henry Brown is a pompous ass most of the time, his views on many issues fall in line with mine. None of Ketner's views on issues fall in line with mine. As a matter of fact, the only issue that I have heard her speak about is the fact that someone is running against her. Much like Obama (as you pointed out), she hasn't really said anything beyond trying to degrade her opponent. Its fine to point out the short comings of your opponent, but you should also be able to point out why you would be a good candidate. Neither has done that with any detail on any issue.

I find it interesting that you can go to www.rnc.org and click on a link called "Issues" and read the RNC's stance on the issues they find important. You may disagree with the issues and/or maybe the RNC stance on those issues, but you can read them. If you go to www.dnc.org you cannot read about the issues that the DNC supports. You can't do anything at all except donate to Obama's campaign. That's it... nothing else on the site except for a donation form. That's pretty telling.

To stir the pot further, reality sucks sometimes, the same logic applies with Graham in the senate except he does have power and influence with his seniority.

I don't like this game but as of this point in time those are the rules. Like I said sometimes reality sucks.

For the Obama supporters I know you won't believe this. If Obama wins Never in my 62 years will I have ever wanted to be more wrong about someone. I would hope and pray that should he win that there will be a time that everything is so wonderful that I am glad my side lost.

The best way to predict the future is to look at the past. Ketner is a liberal. She is surrounded by liberals - Clyburn, Rashad, people who believe it is the government's responsibility to "spread the wealth". We had generations of welfare households who never even tried to work because they knew the government would take care of them. Legislation mostly ended that cycle, and it wasn't the lberals that did it. Government will help you, but you have to have a job!

Obama is a liberal. No, Obama is not a liberal, I am sorry. He is a socialist. He makes most liberals look conservative. Until 2001 he was a member of the socialist party in Illinois. He even made speeches and wrote about how it is the Supreme Court of the United States' responsilility to get involved in "redistributing the wealth." That is just another way of saying tax those who work to give money to those who do not want to work.

You want to talk about honesty? Do your homework on McCain, Obama, Ketner, Brown. They are all liars. But, you will quickly learn who the biggest liars are by far. Look who people associate with. There are two old sayings that aptly apply here: If you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas; and, you can take the pig out of the pen, but you can't take the pen out of the pig.

Regardless of who wins the Presidential election, both the RNC and the DNC need to take a long hard look at their core missions.

If nothing else this contentious race has spotlighted the ever increasing numbers of independent voters who are no longer tied to any particular ideology. Many of these 'independents' no longer look at politics & ideologies purely in black or white, but see society evolving and desiring that government evolves as well.

Over the past four years the RNC has seen an erosion of its core base. It's lost headway in bringing moderates and independents into its fold. For far too long the Republicans have focused on their 'core', religious conservatives who vote as a bloc. I truly believe that the RNC has missed a great opportunity to reach out to voters who are not necessarily conservatives because of religion but because of more secular concerns such as finances, education, and health care. The RNC has catered so much so to the anti-abortion, anti-gay, "family-values" crowd that those who feel there are far greater concerns felt left out, pushed to the side.

The Democrats have focused so much on pandering to the lowest-common denominator of voting blocs that they too have pushed away many independent voters who would have otherwise had some common ground. The Democratic Party has been hijacked by radicals who see the need to force their ideologies down the throats of everyday Americans. Instead of trying to find common ground it is either their way or no way.

Interestingly enough, both major parties are starting to look eerily similar with every national election. Case in point, this socialistic attempt at controlling capitalism, the $800 billion bailout.

Rip: "As a believer in science it is a scientific fact that life begins at the point of conception."

It is certianly NOT a scientific fact. You haven't talked to (or read) enough scientists if you believe that. When life begins is heavily debated. From a scientific standpoint, it completely depends on your definition of "life." Is a group of organized cells life? What if they're disorganized? Does life begin when an organism can exist outside of the womb/egg? All debatable. Throw in the concept of "soul" and it gets even muddier.

Rip: "I'm a believer in science and I also have faith in a higher authority."

I have struggled to understand how people can do both. While I don't understand it, I realize that it can't (and doesn't have to) be explained. You either have faith or you don't. It does hurt your ability to process information in a scientific manner. Science depends on evidence. If you believe in religion and god and there exists no evidence that would stand up to scientific scrutiny, how can you be trusted to evaluate anything accurately?

Our political system and our governments are shot. I doubt they can be fixed. The people that are smart enough, and honest enough, to fix such a mess are also too smart to run for public office in the media environment we have today. All of the political parties are equally screwed up, equally corrupt and equally entrenched in "good ol' boy" networks. The days of honest, intelligent men running for office are long gone. The United States has jumped the shark. None of the candidates in any of the races has the ability to fix that. Yes, we will survive either Obama or McCain. Neither will have much affect on what happens in our daily lives. That path has already been charted and we've been traveling down it for decades. I feel somewhat fortunate in that I think the United States will still be the best country in the world at least for the rest of my life. I cannot say the same for my children's lives. I don't blame the Republicans or the Democrats, one any more than the other (quite honestly, I blame the hippies). It's sad, but they are all screwed up.

Still, I have to vote for the best of the worse. In my opinion, that means voting for Brown in this race.

RIptide, So if life doesn't start at the point of conception then when does it starts? Your lack of a response to REasonSpeacks argument is a classic logical fallacy also Known as: Black & White Thinking. A False Dilemma is a fallacy in which a person uses the following pattern of "reasoning":

Either claim X is true or claim Y is true (when X and Y could both be false).
Claim Y is false.
Therefore claim X is true.

Again, I beg you to read more carefully. I'll say it again. There is no concensus among doctors and scientists as to when life begins. Re-read my post for more details.

I think we're having a breakthrough here. You call me the "owner of reason." Is that the problem? If you think reason can be owned, are you waiting to purchase some? Is that why you can't seem to write with reason, because you've been waiting to purchase some?

I can help you. Reason is not something that can be bought, no matter how low your taxes are. You are born with it and either develop it through thinking and education or let it atrophy through political and religious indoctrination.

I have not yet seen Ben Stein's movie but I will.

I commented on how posters like yourself complain how badly religious zealots treat those who don't think as they do, yet you do the exact same thing.

I don't mock ANY religion, especially publicly, because I feel that everyone, especially in this nation, has the inalienable right to believe as they do as long as it does not interfere with my right to life, liberty or the pursuit of happiness.

That may all change when comrade Barack becomes president. No doubt he will made some changes as to how the freedom of information is broadcasted in this country of ours. Then we might all have to think like you Ms. Reason god forbid.

As far as I'm concern life begins at the point of conception. I even watch it on a PBS program back in the mid-1990s and I think it was called the Miracle of Life. I'm sorry we don't agree on this or anything else but then again that is what this forum is all about.

Henry Brown is simply too tired and too slow for this century. He would be an adequate Congressman for 1960 in the Pee Dee, but Washington is a competitive game and his influence there has been declining, despite his seniority. He doesn't bring a lot of bacon home and he's useless on policy.

Ketner's smart and can handle complex issues. She works with many different types of people. She hasn't run a perfect campaign, but you can't do that on a million dollars these days. I've worked with her campaign and Obama.

It's a massive effort to run for congress now. Frankly, if what Brown is doing is the best he, a four term congressman can deploy, does it demonstrate he can be an effective politician? He doesn't even have many yard signs out. It looks like he had a supply of old ones he counted on using, didn't order in time and now doesn't have enough.

I suspect in his tired, old way Brown is doing the best he can. He hired a tired old campaign consultant and we're getting the old negative, last minute barrage. Where are Brown's ideas? He likes the flag and apple pie. Who doesn't? He's against abortion. Congratulations. What does he plan to do about the population of unwanted and abused children in his district when the funds for their programs are being slashed as they are now? I know private charities doing this work which are running out of money backed by Churches with thinner collections on Sunday. What happens to those kids? Should we punish their parents and bill them? Many of them are already in Jail. Many are unemployed. If they don't pay we can put them in Jail and then pay for that.

These problems are a lot more complicated than Henry Brown understands. They don't go away when you punish stupid people for their mistakes by locking them up by the hundreds. It just makes rednecks feel good. It's a lot harder to salvage families with problems. It's also cheaper than years in shelters and jail. Some people still go to jail. Some people deserve to. Some don't. You have to take the time to tell the difference.

Out country is in a full scale mess now. We've spent most of the money we could afford to print. We need smart people in government now because what little we have left to spend had better go to things that work. Linda's smart and works hard. She's not a bleeding heart liberal. She'll be a great congresswoman.

Neither of them may be perfect but Ketner is too much of a gamble. She hasn't proven herself to be honest (video issues and the 'firings of those responsible') or trustworthy (not sure who fills out her campaign profiles). Plus she was the first to go negative in campaign ads.

When you are claiming to be different and above all of the politics as usual you hold yourself to a higher standard. Ms. Ketner has clearly not met that standard.

And you think I am crazy for not rewarding Brown for his mistakes. At least I know what I am getting with him. With her, no one really knows, and that scares me more.

You can make the case for rape but on the flip side you have a person like Ethel Waters an actress and singer who was born to a mother that was rape at the age of 12 or 13. Her contributions in music, theater and movies span from the 1920s through 1960s and it was all because her mother didn't abort her.

ReasonSpeaks-- Just a weigh in on the science-faith thing:

There are many highly respected scientists who are also people of faith. Being able to use & apply the scientific method does not preclude one from having a faith in a higher power & faith in a higher power certainly does not disable one from perfectly applying the scientific method. Where on earth did you come up w/ that notion?

As a matter of fact there are many scientists who started out as atheists or agnostics & somewhere along the way came to a belief in a Creator.

One well known one is Hugh Ross, an astro-physicist. As an atheist, he set out to "disprove" all if the major holy books by proving errors in historical/factual claims made in them through the various sciences. When he got to the Bible he thought he'd be finished w/ his project in 6 wks. It took him 18 months & by then he had become not only a believer in a higher power, he became a Christian(for an interesting read check out his book The Creator & the Cosmos)

Just providing food for thought.

Looking over the various posts one thing is apparent,most have forgotten about a few pieces of paper that were cobbled together by a bunch of guys with more sense than any of us could lay claim to today.

The constitution is the law of the land and our sorry elected officials swear an oath to defend it against all enemies domestic and foreign then violate that oath on a regular basis in their quest to lure an ignorant electorate into reelecting them to their little fiefdoms.

Nowhere in the constitution is the government responsible to provide jobs,a home,or insurance of any kind, just to name a few of the things that politicians offer "we the people" as gratuities in exchange for votes.

Article II section 8 of the constitution spells out in language easily understood with anyone possessing an eighth grade reading level, what congress can and cannot do.

Until voters understand and and demand that their legislators adhere to what the law of the land proscribes, those same legislators will do as they please if they can profit by it, regardless of weather it is damaging to the rest of us and the country in general.

I voted today and the black turnout was impressive. Many do not have a clue about what his agenda is but they are voting for Obama simply because of his ethnicity.

What's important though is they are voting.

If we all demonstrated that same level of interest in how our country is supposed to function and voted accordingly, many of our seemingly unsolvable problems would start to be resolved.

At present we are morphing into a socialist society,a system of government that has never succeeded and guarantees a true two class populace, the ruling class (upper echelon party members) and a subservient class(workers) .

Now, the evangelical right-wing republicans are not Christians. Almost every aspect of thier religion is alien to the 1st century Jesus and Church. Just what we need, another demo-ralizing-crat to usher in 'change' from bad to worse....FROM ANOTHER POST, HERE'S SOMETHING TO CONSIDER...

7 1/2 YEARS OF GEORGE BUSH vs. 2 OF A DEMOCRAT CONGRESS

Only George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years. The first six the economy was fine. A little over one year ago:
1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) The unemployment rate was 4.5%.
4) The DOW JONES hit a record high--14,000 +
5) American''s were buying new cars, taking cruises, vacations overseas, living large!...

But American''s wanted ''CHANGE''! So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress &
yes--we got ''CHANGE'' all right.
In the PAST YEAR:
1) Consumer confidence has plummeted;
2) Gasoline has been over $3-4 a gallon!;
3) Unemployment is up to 5.5% (a 10% increase);
4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION DOLLARS & prices still dropping;
5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.
6) THE DOW is probing another low~~ $2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS EVAPORATED FROM THEIR STOCKS, BONDS & MUTUAL FUNDS INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS!

YES, IN 2006 AMERICA VOTED FOR CHANGE...AND WE SURE GOT IT! ....REMEMBER THE PRESIDENT HAS NO CONTROL OVER ANY OF THESE ISSUES, ONLY CONGRESS.AND WHAT HAS CONGRESS DONE IN THE LAST TWO YEARS? EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO BRING DOWN THE ECONOMY AND WEAKEN AMERICA IN IRAQ TO BENEFIT THEMSELVES IN THE 2008 ELECTION. THE LATEST DEMORONIC FIASCO IS THE MORTGAGE MELTDOWN AND THERE IS MORE TO COME..CHECK OBAMAS LATEST STATEMENT AT
