McCain, Obama in dead heat, poll says, published 10/23/08

A new poll shows Republican presidential hopeful John McCain blowing by Democrat Barack Obama in South Carolina, but their race in North Carolina and Virginia remains too close to call.

About 55 percent of South Carolina voters said they would vote for McCain, while 35 percent said they would support Obama. Almost 7 percent were undecided.

Meanwhile, the Winthrop University-ETV poll showed that contests in North Carolina and Virginia are deadlocked; the candidates' totals were within the poll's error rate of plus or minus 4 percent.

The poll also asked about U.S. Senate races, and about 47 percent of South Carolina voters said they were undecided in the race between incumbent Republican Lindsey Graham and Democratic challenger Bob Conley.

Graham was supported by 32 percent of those polled, and Conley's support was about 10 percent. The undecided percentage here was noticeably higher than in Senate races in North Carolina and Virginia.

The poll of 617 likely voters in South Carolina, and a similar number from the other two states, also showed that 31 percent of South Carolina voters approve of President George Bush's job performance. About 55 percent don't, while almost 14 percent didn't know or refused to say.

Bush's disapproval rating topped 60 percent in North Carolina and Virginia.

Two-thirds of South Carolina voters said the nation is on the wrong track, and 88 percent said the nation's economic conditions are getting worse.

Almost 10 percent of South Carolinians rated their personal financial situation as excellent, while 44 percent described it as good, 34 percent described it as fair and 11 percent said it was poor.

South Carolina voters said they were mostly looking for a presidential candidate who is honest and has values similar to theirs, while experience, knowledge-intelligence and a candidate's policy positions were less important.

About 43 percent of voters in the state said the economy was the most important issue in the Nov. 4 election.

South Carolina voters didn't give Obama or McCain an edge on the health-care issue, but they did rank McCain somewhat higher on the economy, energy policy, taxes and illegal immigration, and much higher on the issues of Iraq and terrorism.

Asked if they support the great deal of federal money pledged to rescue large private companies, 32 percent of South Carolina voters said yes, while 55 percent opposed it.

About 28 percent of the state's voters said Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin made the GOP ticket more appealing, while 23 percent said it had the opposite effect.

About 48 percent said it made no difference.

Also, 55 percent of South Carolina voters said Obama's choice of U.S. Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate reflects positively on his judgment, while 28 percent said it reflects negatively.

Of course McCain is favored...

The economy: Obama wants to take from the hard working and give to the lazy. I am retired Navy and am now well in to my second career. My wife has a good job. Obama wants to reward our efforts by taxing me and giving MY money to welfare receiving, drug using and couch potato living dirt bags. I did not spend twenty years in the military so that Obama can tax my retirement and give it to freeloaders on the south side of Chicago.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan: Obama has no military experience at any level what so ever. No one that Obama associates with has any military experience what so ever. Neither Obama, nor anyone he associates with, has any concept of war strategy (expect for the few associates of his that have a firm understanding of terrorist tactics). Obama does not have the international experience to assess the long term affects of his decisions and actions. We cannot immediately withdraw from Iraq without serious harm to the United States in the areas of national security, economics and international political standing. We need to leave Iraq as soon as possible: after ensuring the country will be an ally of ours in this volatile region.

National and border security: Stop illegal immigrants and upset 25% of the minority voter base? Obama? Not a chance. If you don't stop illegal immigration, you're also not stopping terrorist from entering our country at will.

Crime: Obama has stated that we are too tough on criminals. Prison sentences, in his opinion, are too long. Please explain that to the numerous women that were raped last night. Please explain that to the people that woke up this morning only to find their car window broken, stereo stolen: so that a crack head can get high one more time.

Energy: We need to exploit EVERY possible means of energy production available. Off shore drilling and nuclear power included. Obama doesn't have a clue.

Mc Bush does'nt have a firm grasp on a handrail let alone an economic policy. "the fundementals of our economy are strong". If he meant "our workers are the greatest in the world", why did'nt he just say that? Because he's clueless. He admitted being clueless in the Keating 5 saving and loan scandal that soaked the people for 123 billion.Left them broke in the streets. If he had a clue he would of stopped it. If he was'nt so greedy it would of been the Keating 4.

spankerbuns, I don't know about you, but Obama's plan increases my taxes. Even if I weren't in the scope of his tax increase plan, it would still affect me. His plan taxes the very people that have succeeded in this country. Those are the people that will turn the economy around. Welfare recipients will NOT get the economy jump started. I'm not part of any socialized health care either. My health care is provided by my previous employer simply due to the fact that I earned it. I worked for it.

3olivesmike, actually I retired MMCS/SS. If you knew anything about the military, you'd know that nobody can stay in for 20 years without advancing well past the rank of third class petty officer. As for racist... please copy and paste the part of my post, or any other post I've ever made, that you consider to be racist. Don't waste your time... you won't be able to find anything racist. Thanks for contributing intelligently to the conversation though... oh wait... you didn't. Hell, even spankerbuns was civil this morning and provided clear opinions.

However, the behavior of the Dems over the last couple of weeks especially, has convinced me I must vote McCain/Palin.
I will vote 3rd party in every other race, but Obama & Biden have done more than shake my trust & confidence-they have made me very afraid for this country.

For anyone interested in something you will not hear on the mainstream media Google Phil Berg...a life long democrat, lawyer of 37 years, chairman of his local Dem party, on & on.. who has brought suit against Obama challenging his origin of birth...

And dont give me the young and dumb college kid crap either cause I have served my country in the military and graduated College of Charleston afterwards all while working fulltime in the same job Im in now. YankeeLady,

Braindead is very appropo for this state. McC and OB are so closely matched that you really can't tell them apart.

It doesn't matter who's in power, I work I make money, I live, I pay taxes, I sleep, I eat I enjoy life to the fullest. Whoever is in office has nil effect on my life. Some here blame whoever is convenient for their woes. I'm glad they'll probably remain there.

n4dhs please provide some facts for your rant about OB cutting retirement benefits, instead of using the gossipy probably, maybe, might, I think, I heard mumbo jumbo that passes for facts nowadays. Thanks. Did you know McC voted against the new GI Bill? Yeah he supports the troops fully. Keep sipping the kool-aid. BTW, I'm combat veteran of 2 wars(including this misguided adventure times 2) and multiple deployments, carry a VA rating and am a 24 year veteran to top it off. I'm voting for neither. Neither represent me.

Given McC's choice of Caribou Barbie as VP, calls his judgment into question for picking such a rube like Palin. OBs cries of change are are nullified by choosing Biden. Ron Paul has disappeared.

Let's be honest here folks. Most of the whites in South Carolina voting for McCain are doing so simply because Obama isn't 100% white and they don't think any non-white person is capable of leading this country. Remember, South Carolina was one of the last states to make Martin Luther King day a holiday and this man was a non-violent Southern preacher. Let's admit it and be honest, South Carolina WAS AND STILL IS one of the most hateful and racist States in the U.S.

I can't believe that anyone believes even half of what these eguys are saying. When is the last time a president came through on a fraction of what he's promised?

Also, many of you are quick to insult those with opposing views -- especially those of you who are conservative in your rhetoric. I would think that everyone votes for not only what is best (in their opinions) for the country, but what's best for them and their families. All liberals are not lazy. All liberals do not live on welfare. That's just stupid. All conservatives are not wealthy.

Many liberals are HARD-WORKING lower and middle class people who just want to pay their bills, raise their children, and be happy. I would say that's true for conservatives also. It's a shame that we can't take the best of both parties' ideologies and actually accomplish something.

And as for liberals taking away freedom, I assume you mean the 2nd amendment. If that's what you mean, you are correct. And, I have no problem with the 2nd amendment. I will never own a gun, but others can keep theirs. Chances of eliminating gun violence in this country have become slim-to-none at this point anyway.

But I shutter to think of the rights and freedoms that the republicans would like to eliminate. Those freedoms of choice and privacy are the freedoms that I most cherish, so those are the freedoms that I will consider when voting. That does not make me an idiot. It makes me a conscientious private citizen. You like guns? That's great. Vote how you need to in order to preserve your rights to them.

Please, do not forget that there is a 3rd party out there. One that advocates for ALL rights and freedoms and a less-intrusive government. One that advocates for fiscal responsibility. Don't be a sheep.

Retired military and Government contractor? Well that explains alot, stay on the gravy train, not much thought needed for working for the gubmint in a good ol' boy system perpetuated by waste.
Judging from his service career, he's probably another high priced paper pusher/bean counter making sure they get their own, protect their job then they might have time for whatever they were really hired for. Bureaucracy in it's finest form, Ex- fed/military uppers getting the inside scoop on over paid contractor positions. If the American taxpayer cared about the piss poor quality of service on return for their tax dollar, the gravy train would sink under it's own devices.

I was a gubmint contractor and quit because of the abuses and shoddy work the American taxpayer is getting for their tax dollar. I couldn't consciously screw people over. Glad to see you are more than capable of it. No creativity or thinking required. A true hierarchy of stagnation.

Gee they use radios to call in air strikes, artillery, MLRS but he doesn't make ammo. Okay he only facilitates the ability to kill. Gotcha n4dhs. The internet is use to pass plans and telecommunicate battle plans, etc., and the like for operations. Nice try. The ancillary off shoot of those capabilities is troops being able to use it for personal communications. Again nice try.

Radios that have never worked right because of government contractors made them that way, the procurement folks knew it and didn't care. Along comes someone else under government contract to fix them, brilliant now innit mate? The endless circle. Love it. Job security at the expense of the tax payer

I paid taxes all around the world too, saw the shortcomings of the NHS in the UK, so your point is what? That McC won't do the same and attempt nationalization of the health system? Please.

I'm still waiting for some evidence of OB gutting retirement benefits but if you only can provide gossip, I understand with you being a Navy wife and all living off of your husbands accolades.

Education, I have one or two of those degree thingys. What about you or do you worship your husband so much you can't make a stand without him? Just curious.

Other countries have phones, most internet is commercial or leased from commercial to reduce infrastructure costs to the government. Again, nice try

abitskeptical, about Phil Berg;
Democrat: Obama's grandma confirms Kenyan birth
'This has been a real sham he's pulled off for the last 20 months'

"This has been a real sham he's pulled off for the last 20 months," Berg told Savage. "I'll release it [the tape] in a day or two, affidavits from her talking to a certain person. I heard the tape. She was speaking [to someone] here in the United States."

He said the telephone call was from Obama's paternal grandmother affirming she "was in the delivery room in Kenya when he was born Aug. 4, 1961."

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?f...
---------------------------------------------------------

Hmmm, is this why Obama is "rushing" to her side?

Evil Genius you're a moron. His paternal grandmother said he was born in Kenya. He's going to Hawaii where his MATERNAL grandmother raised him. I know that's a tough concept for you, since your family tree has so few branches.

n4dhs, I signed a contract with the government and retirement bennies are one of the rewards for 24 years of service. They are fulfilling their end of the contract paying me retirement as agreed as I have fulfilled my contractual obligation. No issues there and my health care in the service was on par with NHS type toward the end. I pay for my health care via Tricare now.

I don't hate anyone, so take your strawman argument and try again. If your hubby is so miserable working for the government because of folks who can speak their mind, then why not try something else? Kinda hard when you are stuck on the government teat now isn't it? Government contracting and active military service are two different animals, try and remember that. Weak attempts to compare the two only supports peoples arguments about contractors and the gravy train that'll surely continue under McC.

Military folks or those that never really left the military after retiring, aren't really tolerant of those of us that don't speak lockstep. Thinking outside the box or being innovative always scared career military brown shoe types. We must be traitors or liberals they uttered. Sad.

Actually I got promoted below the zone and made rank rather fast. Glad to see you joined after your hubby had done all the hard work to get to his position. Very smart of you. Miss the hard parts. I was USAF, so hence the rebelliousness. I don't have a bad word to say about those serving, so stop spinning and setting up weak strawmen arguments sugar. Early, your post about Revelation has nothing to do with anything, and your woefully inept interpretation of it makes you look absurd.

Revelation was almost certainly written before 100 AD, which would mean that the person who wrote it would have no way of knowing anything at all about Muslims, whose religion wouldn't even show up until after 600 AD. Nothing in that document references Islam or Muslims, nor does Revelation even mention the anti-Christ at all.

Your historical ignorance also seems to extend to not knowing much at all about why or by whom this nation was founded. Many of the earliest European settlers came to colonize America to escape religious intolerance and oppression in Europe. When the war of independence against Britain was won it was decided that freedoms from all forms of tyranny would be the top priority. When the Constitution of the United States of America was written, it was ratified only on the condition that the Bill of Rights be attached, first and foremost among them being the right to freedom of speech, religion, peaceable gathering, etc. The First Amendment does not specifically guarantee Americans the right to be any kind of *Christian* they want, it specifically guarantees Americans the right to freely belong to *ANY* religion they want.

Early - Point taken re: Barack's credentials and associations. That makes me think of Bush's credentials compared to McCain in 2000 and how Bush played the race card here in South Carolina with the "McCain has a black child" tactic. Bush's campaign turned something honorable that McCain and his wife did by adopting an Indonesian child into something sinister. I lost all respect for Bush after that. McCain = War hero. Bush = Spoiled little rich brat, cocaine/alcohol user, whose family got him into the National Guard to avoid Vietnam. What a coward and people in this State just loved the cowboy. McCain should have been the choice in 2000.

ACCORDING TO HIS BOOK, HE WILL STAND BY HIS MUSLIM BROTHERS SHOULD THE POLITICAL WINDS CHANGE IN AN UGLY DIRECTION. I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT A PERSONS RACE. ONE QUALIFICATION I MUST HAVE, IS THAT THEY ARE LOOKING OUT FOR THE BEST INTEREST OF ALL CITIZENS.

And I am trying to be fair to both. And yes we only have 8 electoral votes but those votes count so I am trying got make the right choice here. So, I will keep researching till 7 am Tuesday morning November 4th.
Whether it is McCain or Barrack or even Mickey Mouse. It will be me who makes the choice. And not someone who tells me who I should vote for.

First off JLWDALFAN, you should realize that typing in all capitol letters is the equivalent of screaming at the top of your lungs. Not only does it tend to come off a little rude, it also just looks displeasing on the eye.

As far as Obama's book, you clearly haven't read it. Before spreading something that you hear from someone else you should look into it and make sure that what you're hearing is actually true. There isn't much of a difference between intentionally spreading lies and unintentionally spreading lies because you believe the ones someone else tells you.

It was a shame that McCain looked so upset at Obama while he was speaking. I think McCain is a good man and argueably wouldnt be that bad of a Republican President. Still surprised that he even got the nomination actually but anyway my vote is with Obama. Kinda took me aback that a 15 year old could comprehend something of this magnitude. I also (even though i'm voting for Obama too) told her that she should always make her own mind up based on her opinions and not let others choose her choices when she gets older. She laughed and said, " Daddy, I know that, beside McCain is too old to be president, he's like 80 something!". Gotta love PRIVATE SCHOOL EDUCATION. HA ha

When my daughter registered to vote, I asked her who she thought she'd be voting for. Her response was "Probably McCain". I asked her why McCain and she mumbled something about Obama never really saying anything about the issues. My honest opinion was that she was repeating what she's heard me say in the past. I told her that she needs to go to both candidates' websites and review what they have to say about the issues that are important to her and THEN make up her mind who she wanted to vote for. When she makes up her mind, if she hasn't already, I feel confident that she'll still vote for McCain. The issues that are important to my daughter are the same ones that are important to me (the economy, the wars, energy, crime and national security). When you look at the candidates stances, and even more important, their ability to be effective, on those issues, side by side, McCain is the clear choice.

Trying to explain local politics to her is going to be a lot harder.

Abitske-There is a lot that the media ignores on BOTH sides. My problem is that we dont focus on the issues, all we do is sling mud back and forth. Someone tell me why I should vote for McCain and not Obama. Use policies and not personal attacks and I probaly would listen. The media's job is to sell papers and nothing else. They get paid to do that. I see why they promote the latest mud slinging and gaffes that the candidates do. How bout WE focus on the issues the rest of this Forum??

Im voting for Obama cause he said my taxes wont be raised cause I make less than 250k yearly (90-110k is my salary). That sounds wonderful to me. Im voting for him cause he WILL have people with experience in his cabinent (Colin Powell,etc...) to guide US out of the mess we are in. He doesnt seem to mind reaching across the aisles for the better good for this country. He supports a woman's right to abortion (mind you my daughter was born at a young age). He doesnt mind COMMUNICATION with rogue countries. That alone could save thousands of my brothers and sisters in the Armed forces lives cause we could maybe diplomatically come to terms with some of these rogue nations (like north korea that we just took off the list) if we just tried. Also it could give us support in the rest of the world's opinion so they could help us and we wouldnt be the ONLY police of the world. They could help us further our interest abroad. Obama also wants to tax those comapnies that take work overseas and tax the oil companies that are making record profits; I drive a BIG suv so you know where I stand on that. These are some of the reasons why people like me support Obama. Why should I back McCain? Please dont start the palling around with terrorist or muslim or hate-he-has-for-the-white-man rhetoric cause its getting old!! Tell me why we should vote for McCain and use issues!!!!

I have been researching the Obama-Biden ticket mainly because the mainstream media seems to have refused to do this. This research has not been easy because one has to follow a trail to get to an original source or something that is not a product of an agenda driven source (virtually impossible)

What I have been looking for is not "dirt" but what I consider "red flags" or concerns. I have been trying to get a truthful grasp of all of the candidates. This is very difficult because it seems that most all of the news sources are heavily polarized in one direction or the other.

Journalistic objectivity is a lost standard.

There is plenty of "dirt", & then some, put forth day after day on McCain-Palin so no need to look for 'negatives' to consider there.

Abit, I wish I was able to call those people and speak to them. Wow, that is a lot to digest. I would hope that Michelle wasn't dumb enough to call and say those idiotic things to people she feels are spreading lies about Barrak; lies that she says came from American bloggers.

If she feels that they are "colluding" with those "racists" to damage her husband's chances at the presidency, one would think that she would be intelligent enough not to call those people and go on a rant like it says she did.

I know that I wouldn't call people that I feel are aiding in the spread of untruths about by husband and say the stupid crap that is said in the article. That in itself is iodotic.

I cannot say for sure if I believe it or not. But, if this is factual, I would have to say that I am disappointed in and disgusted by Michelle's attitude. I will have to ponder on this one for a while. This is so crazy! WOW!

kontact-no- I am not a fan of blogs & do not read them.

I listen to a variety of news sources & find myself flipping from channel to channel & from radio station to station in an effort to get a broad spectrum of information. Of course not all info reflects the truth...but unless one is willing to look at a lot of various sources it will be difficult, if not impossible, to be able to discern the truth.

When I hear something that sounds odd or concerning, I will look up the name or "fact" I heard & try to verify it from a source aside from the one where I 1st heard it.

It is interesting that you assumed the story I found is fabricated. The link I gave goes directly to the African Press. Pray tell, why would they fabricate this story?

Of course I am concerned about the "issues". However when there is one piece of evidence after another that a candidate has not been truthful & even made things up while on the campaign trail, tell me how I could trust that he will do what he says he will do after he is elected?

The tax issue is a big reason I would not vote for Obama. While I am disgusted with what the GOP has done in growing this government & spending, McCain has stuck to his guns regarding earmarks. That simple fact is very telling in regards to his fiscal policy.

I have changed my mind once already regarding voting 3rd party all the way. I very well might change it again before election day.

I am not been sold on McCain or Palin.

However, if the constant barrage of ridiculous negative "news" put forth about that campaign has been intended to sway Independent voters to vote for Obama-Biden, it has backfired w/ me.

I am no fan of Hillary, but the constant negative press she got also backfired with me. It did nothing to make me consider the other candidates in the Dem primary in any better light.

there are many issues to consider, but when a society gets abortion, same-sex marriage, embryonic stem-cell research, human cloning to name a few, wrong economic concerns will soon not matter.

His voting record earned him the title of the most liberal senator in the US Senate in 2007. NATIONAL JOURNAL:(01/31/2008)

Obama accomplished this feat in 2 short years. I wonder what would happen to America if he had four years to work with.

planned parenthood gives him a 100 % ratings.
the homosexual community supports him. Ahmadinejad, Chavez, Castro, Hamas etc loves him.
he said he would nominate liberal judges to the supreme court.

he voted
against the infanticide bill.
No on the constitutional ban of same-sex marriage.
no on partial birth abortion.
no on confirming Justices Roberts and Alito. These two judges are conservatives and they have since overturned partial birth abortion. The same practice Obama wanted to continue.

The 5 Step Partial Birth Abortion procedure
A. Guided by ultrasound, the abortionist grabs the baby's leg with forceps.
(Remember this is a live baby)
B. The baby's leg is pulled out into the birth canal.
C. The abortionist delivers the baby's entire body, except for the head.
D. The abortionist jams scissors into the baby's skull. The scissors are then opened to enlarge the hole.
E. The scissors are removed and a suction catheter is inserted. The child's brains are sucked out, causing the skull to collapse. The dead baby is then removed.
God help him.

Would you support a White President who went to a church which has tenants that said they have a

1. Commitment to the White Community
2. Commitment to the White Family
etc, etc
Just change the word from white to black and you have Obamas former church. If President Bush was a member of a church like this, he would be called a racist. Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton would have been marching outside.

ah...kontact...how I've missed you...

it all just boils down to what you think the fundamental purpose of government is...

I actually will fall in the range of poverty this year. I will get everything I paid in taxes back. However, when looking at tax plans, I do not believe that there is any need to raise taxes on people who are already paying the bulk of the income taxes in this country. I understand that people also pay payroll taxes...but this is money they already get back in the form of social security and medicare. Would I pay less taxes under BO? perhaps - for now - but when I am making a lot more money (once I've finished school) I think I should be able to keep what I've earned. If I am forced at the hand of the government to give up the money I have earned, then what is the point - why not just sit on my couch, watch TV, and take money someone else has earned? BTW, Kontact - your taxes won't be raised under either proposed plan...just a thought.

Rather than taxing ANYONE more, why don't they just cut needless programs. The budget is just way too big. Is this partially George Bush's fault? Yes. We have spent way too much money. I do believe that research has shown, thought, that JMs budget proposal would cost less money that BOs.

As for foreign policy - sure - good, nice people would sit down and talk. I do not believe that people that hate America just for existing will sit down and talk. They want power, and they want us to crumble. I just don't happen to agree with that philosophy when dealing with people who would just as soon spit on me.

Abortion - still no opinion...not something I will ever vote based on...

Taxing corporations (like big oil) - I have a couple comments on this. A: if you tax the oil company profits, it is going to filter down to you, the consumer...you will essentially pay any tax that they pay. B: why is it ok to give the movie industry tax breaks to stay in the US to film movies, but not ok to give other industries tax breaks to stay in America and hire American workers? see the 700 billion dollar bailout package for more info on that...and yes, both BO and JM voted for the package, so that is not really a comment about either candidate.

As for the cabinet - I believe both candidates have expressed an interest in reaching across the aisle to fill their cabinet positions. I listened to Colin Powell's reasoning behind backing BO, and it was just a lot of words - no policy reasons behind it. He wanted to go to Iraq. He wanted the troop surge. BO didn't want to do either of those things. I'm just not sure I trust Powell's reasoning here...basically, he is backing charisma. Great. I'm all for charisma. I just won't vote based on it....

Hyperbole is the currency of presidential campaigns, but this year the nation's future truly hangs in the balance.

The United States is battered and drifting after eight years of President Bush's failed leadership. He is saddling his successor with two wars, a scarred global image and a government systematically stripped of its ability to protect and help its citizens - whether they are fleeing a hurricane's floodwaters, searching for affordable health care or struggling to hold on to their homes, jobs, savings and pensions in the midst of a financial crisis that was foretold and preventable.

As tough as the times are, the selection of a new president is easy. After nearly two years of a grueling and ugly campaign, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois has proved that he is the right choice to be the 44th president of the United States.

Mr. Obama has met challenge after challenge, growing as a leader and putting real flesh on his early promises of hope and change. He has shown a cool head and sound judgment. We believe he has the will and the ability to forge the broad political consensus that is essential to finding solutions to this nation's problems.

In the same time, Senator John McCain of Arizona has retreated farther and farther to the fringe of American politics, running a campaign on partisan division, class warfare and even hints of racism. His policies and worldview are mired in the past. His choice of a running mate so evidently unfit for the office was a final act of opportunism and bad judgment that eclipsed the accomplishments of 26 years in Congress.

Given the particularly ugly nature of Mr. McCain's campaign, the urge to choose on the basis of raw emotion is strong. But there is a greater value in looking closely at the facts of life in America today and at the prescriptions the candidates offer. The differences are profound.

Mr. McCain offers more of the Republican every-man-for-himself ideology, now lying in shards on Wall Street and in Americans' bank accounts. Mr. Obama has another vision of government's role and responsibilities.

In his convention speech in Denver, Mr. Obama said, "Government cannot solve all our problems, but what it should do is that which we cannot do for ourselves: protect us from harm and provide every child a decent education; keep our water clean and our toys safe; invest in new schools and new roads and new science and technology."

Since the financial crisis, he has correctly identified the abject failure of government regulation that has brought the markets to the brink of collapse.

The Economy

The American financial system is the victim of decades of Republican deregulatory and anti-tax policies. Those ideas have been proved wrong at an unfathomable price, but Mr. McCain - a self-proclaimed "foot soldier in the Reagan revolution" - is still a believer.

Mr. Obama sees that far-reaching reforms will be needed to protect Americans and American business.

Mr. McCain talks about reform a lot, but his vision is pinched. His answer to any economic question is to eliminate pork-barrel spending - about $18 billion in a $3 trillion budget - cut taxes and wait for unfettered markets to solve the problem.

Mr. Obama is clear that the nation's tax structure must be changed to make it fairer. That means the well-off Americans who have benefited disproportionately from Mr. Bush's tax cuts will have to pay some more. Working Americans, who have seen their standard of living fall and their children's options narrow, will benefit. Mr. Obama wants to raise the minimum wage and tie it to inflation, restore a climate in which workers are able to organize unions if they wish and expand educational opportunities.

Mr. McCain, who once opposed President Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy as fiscally irresponsible, now wants to make them permanent. And while he talks about keeping taxes low for everyone, his proposed cuts would overwhelmingly benefit the top 1 percent of Americans while digging the country into a deeper fiscal hole.

National Security

The American military - its people and equipment - is dangerously overstretched. Mr. Bush has neglected the necessary war in Afghanistan, which now threatens to spiral into defeat. The unnecessary and staggeringly costly war in Iraq must be ended as quickly and responsibly as possible.

While Iraq's leaders insist on a swift drawdown of American troops and a deadline for the end of the occupation, Mr. McCain is still talking about some ill-defined "victory." As a result, he has offered no real plan for extracting American troops and limiting any further damage to Iraq and its neighbors.

Mr. Obama was an early and thoughtful opponent of the war in Iraq, and he has presented a military and diplomatic plan for withdrawing American forces. Mr. Obama also has correctly warned that until the Pentagon starts pulling troops out of Iraq, there will not be enough troops to defeat the Taliban and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan.

Mr. McCain, like Mr. Bush, has only belatedly focused on Afghanistan's dangerous unraveling and the threat that neighboring Pakistan may quickly follow.

Mr. Obama would have a learning curve on foreign affairs, but he has already showed sounder judgment than his opponent on these critical issues. His choice of Senator Joseph Biden - who has deep foreign-policy expertise - as his running mate is another sign of that sound judgment. Mr. McCain's long interest in foreign policy and the many dangers this country now faces make his choice of Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska more irresponsible.

Both presidential candidates talk about strengthening alliances in Europe and Asia, including NATO, and strongly support Israel. Both candidates talk about repairing America's image in the world. But it seems clear to us that Mr. Obama is far more likely to do that - and not just because the first black president would present a new American face to the world.

Mr. Obama wants to reform the United Nations, while Mr. McCain wants to create a new entity, the League of Democracies - a move that would incite even fiercer anti-American furies around the world.

Unfortunately, Mr. McCain, like Mr. Bush, sees the world as divided into friends (like Georgia) and adversaries (like Russia). He proposed kicking Russia out of the Group of 8 industrialized nations even before the invasion of Georgia. We have no sympathy for Moscow's bullying, but we also have no desire to replay the cold war. The United States must find a way to constrain the Russians' worst impulses, while preserving the ability to work with them on arms control and other vital initiatives.

Both candidates talk tough on terrorism, and neither has ruled out military action to end Iran's nuclear weapons program. But Mr. Obama has called for a serious effort to try to wean Tehran from its nuclear ambitions with more credible diplomatic overtures and tougher sanctions. Mr. McCain's willingness to joke about bombing Iran was frightening.

The Constitution and the Rule of Law

Under Mr. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the justice system and the separation of powers have come under relentless attack. Mr. Bush chose to exploit the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001, the moment in which he looked like the president of a unified nation, to try to place himself above the law.

Mr. Bush has arrogated the power to imprison men without charges and browbeat Congress into granting an unfettered authority to spy on Americans. He has created untold numbers of "black" programs, including secret prisons and outsourced torture. The president has issued hundreds, if not thousands, of secret orders. We fear it will take years of forensic research to discover how many basic rights have been violated.

Both candidates have renounced torture and are committed to closing the prison camp in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

But Mr. Obama has gone beyond that, promising to identify and correct Mr. Bush's attacks on the democratic system. Mr. McCain has been silent on the subject.

Mr. McCain improved protections for detainees. But then he helped the White House push through the appalling Military Commissions Act of 2006, which denied detainees the right to a hearing in a real court and put Washington in conflict with the Geneva Conventions, greatly increasing the risk to American troops.

The next president will have the chance to appoint one or more justices to a Supreme Court that is on the brink of being dominated by a radical right wing. Mr. Obama may appoint less liberal judges than some of his followers might like, but Mr. McCain is certain to pick rigid ideologues. He has said he would never appoint a judge who believes in women's reproductive rights.

The Candidates

It will be an enormous challenge just to get the nation back to where it was before Mr. Bush, to begin to mend its image in the world and to restore its self-confidence and its self-respect. Doing all of that, and leading America forward, will require strength of will, character and intellect, sober judgment and a cool, steady hand.

Mr. Obama has those qualities in abundance. Watching him being tested in the campaign has long since erased the reservations that led us to endorse Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic primaries. He has drawn in legions of new voters with powerful messages of hope and possibility and calls for shared sacrifice and social responsibility.

Mr. McCain, whom we chose as the best Republican nominee in the primaries, has spent the last coins of his reputation for principle and sound judgment to placate the limitless demands and narrow vision of the far-right wing. His righteous fury at being driven out of the 2000 primaries on a racist tide aimed at his adopted daughter has been replaced by a zealous embrace of those same win-at-all-costs tactics and tacticians.

He surrendered his standing as an independent thinker in his rush to embrace Mr. Bush's misbegotten tax policies and to abandon his leadership position on climate change and immigration reform.

Mr. McCain could have seized the high ground on energy and the environment. Earlier in his career, he offered the first plausible bill to control America's emissions of greenhouse gases. Now his positions are a caricature of that record: think Ms. Palin leading chants of "drill, baby, drill."

Mr. Obama has endorsed some offshore drilling, but as part of a comprehensive strategy including big investments in new, clean technologies.

Mr. Obama has withstood some of the toughest campaign attacks ever mounted against a candidate. He's been called un-American and accused of hiding a secret Islamic faith. The Republicans have linked him to domestic terrorists and questioned his wife's love of her country. Ms. Palin has also questioned millions of Americans' patriotism, calling Republican-leaning states "pro-America."

This politics of fear, division and character assassination helped Mr. Bush drive Mr. McCain from the 2000 Republican primaries and defeat Senator John Kerry in 2004. It has been the dominant theme of his failed presidency.

The nation's problems are simply too grave to be reduced to slashing "robo-calls" and negative ads. This country needs sensible leadership, compassionate leadership, honest leadership and strong leadership. Barack Obama has shown that he has all of those qualities.

You can gain a clearer insight into Obama's psyche by taking a closer look at Michelle. The characteristically angry, "Hate America", Michelle Obama experienced a Hollywood makeover for her DNC convention speech that will beguile the "willing dupes" in the electorate. You could almost see her gag when she had to recite Obama's handler's line about "loving her country." But, her previous well-publicized radical associations; and, her multiple attempts to trash our Nation, will betray her scripted persona. It was a foregone conclusion that the Obama handlers would have Michelle with a smile-cast to cover-up her normally angry countenance, and chain-locked to the teleprompter with their carefully scripted commentary so as to obscure the prospective 1st lady's deeply angry disposition towards America. What a tragic example for our children; what a disastrous blow to societal cohesion at home; what a disconcerting message to our friends and allies; and, what a comforting message to our fanatical opponents abroad; to see a woman who has expressed her beliefs that: "our souls are broken in this nation"; "blacks must join in solidarity to combat a white oppressor"; "America is a nation that was founded on crime and hatred"; "we're a country that is just downright mean."; "We're a nation of cynics, sloths, and complacents."; "America is guided by fear, and getting worse all the time."; and, laments that she will face, "further integration and/or assimilation into a white culture and social structure"; to have a potential opportunity to secure the White House itself as the platform for her hate-filled dictum. And, of note to practicing Christians in our society, is Michelle's pledge that: "Barack will be tireless in keeping legal the practice of partial birth abortions". All of this from a woman who has benefited enormously from affirmative actions which she conveniently neglected to mention in the convention speech! Along with her husband's long-term subversive associations, his immersion in seditious anti-American diatribe; and, his recent proclamation: "I don't want that (referring to America in its current form) for my little girls.", has indeed revealed the Obamas as the real-life Manchurian Couple; and, certainly explains Obama's proclamation: "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded as the military." The program that Obama has referred to is "Public Allies", of which Michelle is the Executive Director of the Chicago Chapter; and, which consists of government-funded reeducation camps where Amercan youth are brainwashed into thinking "America is a racist, oppressive place in need of social change." mkris-Thank you for giving FACTS as to why WE will both be voting for Obama!!

Dogwood-Glad to hear your doing ok; As for the tax issue you might want to do a lil more research cause independant research has shown that they both will keep us about the same taxwise. And its hard to critique a man like Colin Powell because of his vast knowledge. He's not only a registered republican but he even served in the Bull@#$, I mean Bush administration. He left because of policy differences he had with the rest of the administration. If he and countless other republicans are questioning the decisions that McCain has made this election it should make the general population question those decisions also. ANd on the tax break issue Obama wants to curtail ALL tax breaks to companies. And the crazy thing McCain wants to balance the budget in 4 years.HOW?? If the corporations are getting tax break then who will pay?? In 4 years at that.

Evilidiot-Since when was Obama running for chief of police of the United States of America?? I didnt know thats what he was running for. OHH you mean he was the law enforcement in Chicago? So what your saying is Senators are responsible for crime in their communities?? WOW!!

dhshjh-ever thought that these bills were presented with some other piece of nonsense trash that was tacked on along with the bill and Obama voted NO? Stop believing everything you read or at least do research and see what motives the sources have. There is a million authors out there and im sure there is a million diferent motives for them writing their articles. Just depends on whom their writings are catered to. AND PLEASE DONT USE RELIGION TO TO JUSTIFY VOTING FOR ANYONE SPECIFIC CANDIDATE. Thats the most B.S. thing anyone can do. If you so Christian (and I am)then how could you vote for McCain who supports the death penalty?? WOW!! And on the black issue-trust me if you lived the life of a educated young black man in America then you could see how people use race to make decisions and/or opinions when it comes to us and our culture. ie when a young black man in the city puts rims on his car its refered to as ghetto by mainstream America; why when a young white male puts a lift kit and big tires on a truck and lives in coosaw creek its looked at differently. There is a double standard in America that hard to explain buts it IS there. If there wasnt then we wouldnt be having a dialogue about race every day on these same posts. Anyway I plan on voting for Obama and not Rev. Wright nor Mr. Ayers.

Now that I have that cleared up could we please get some facts on the issues now.

Abitskeptical, I have doubts about that API article. The article provides no source, no reliable citation, and their only attempt at legitimization is to suggest that curious readers call an API telephone number, where an API staff member will explain how an API claim is true. That sounds an awful lot like making a claim and then arguing that it's true because you say it's true.

There seems to be a lot of bluster on various websites about the alleged call, but the only true-believers are the far-right zealots, conspiracy theorists and various others of the tinfoil hat crowd. The API keeps talking about releasing the tapes, but won't make good on the promise, which absolutely screams that the entire story is a sham. It's telling that the only US "news" outlet that API will even talk to is Fox News, already well-known for a conservative, right-wing bias. Although it is amusing that the API has already failed to meet their own promised deadlines for producing any tapes of the alleged incident. If I had to guess, I would speculate that this is probably a case of an organization pretending to be a reputable news outlet telling an outright lie because they thought they were small enough to get away with it.

I truly do not know if what you said about Fox news (being the only news organization reporting this) is true or not because I did not hear of this on any news. I was Googling something else & independently found this article.

I guess if I had a blind loyalty to the Obama campaign I would refuse to consider it. Frankly I do not know what I think, but I am not going to dismiss it totally without more evidence. The website looks as official as any other & certainly deals with many more issues aside from that one.

One of the reasons I have such high respect & regard for Lovely is that she has an intellectual curiosity & keeps her mind open--that things might not be as they seem or that things might be disappointing relative to what she initially believes.

I believe she tries to see the truth, regardless of her own personal opinions & desires. That is why I asked her what her take on that article is. I also Googled a little more about this and it says that API claimed they were in negotiations with Fox News but Fox News is denying any dealings with them.

From reading the posts by the posters and following their links it says that Berg (the lawywer suing Obama) has the tapes and others say that "something huge" will hit the fan next week and it will not be good for the Obama camp.

This sounds like they are referring to the tapes and if the tapes are authentic and Michelle did say those things, she will have some "serious 'splaining to do."

However, API has been promising the tapes for the past 2 weeks (according to their site) and have been postponing the release date for one reason or another. I hope Mr. Korir (the editor for API) is being truthful and this isn't a hoax because that will spell trouble for the McCain camp as people will try to balme him for being in cahoots with API to ruin Barak's chances at the seat. We will see!

How is it possible that a man who is widely recognized as the least experienced; and, most radical far-left extremist ever nominated by a major political party could beguile so many simply because, while anchored to a teleprompter, he's a SLICK TALKER? A man who, was a principal architect of the mortgage meltdown; and, an individual who labored feverishly to engineer an American defeat in Iraq. In perhaps the ONLY forthright moment of his extended campaign, Barack "ACORN" Obama, while being interviewed on ABC, lamented the dispersions frequently cast against: "MY MUSLIM FAITH". A comment Colin Powell followed-up with: "So what if he is a Muslim". The ascendancy of this charlatan, along with his characteristically angry, "Hate America" wife, Michelle Obama, to the Presidency would unquestionably mark the portending demise of our Constitutional Republic that so many have shed their precious blood to nurture and preserve. The McCain campaign is in sad shape. When a young white female campaign worker sees how bad the campaign is going and has to resort to the "common" racist tactic of blaming a black man for a "made-up" crime, "you betcha" it's not going well.

Specifically, the young woman said a 6'4 black man attacked her and carved a "B" on her face because she had a McCain sticker. The made-up "boogey-man" also, of course, robbed her.

Well, Fox News, of course, was the only sucker from prime time that played up the story, which was quickly deemed a hoax, and Fox had mud on its face. And likewise, the McCain campaign jumped on this, but when they found it was a hoax, quickly distanced themselves. This little liar even got condolences from Sarah and Todd Palin.

Mercy!

Now now preachlove-using the obvious pathological behavior of one person to get in digs against McCain-Palin is a bit specious.

I heard this story on several mainstream news outlets.

I also heard that the Obama campaign, as well, graciously offered condolences to, well wishes & prayers for the young woman. Everyone took her at her word until it became clear she was lying.

What would you have the McCain camp do now? Embrace her with open arms? What in the world would you have to say about that? Ha!

Now just be honest & admit that as far as McCain-Palin are concerned it really is damn if they do & damn if they don't, on most everything, isn't it?

abit.. - what other "Prime Time" (as I said) news outlets did you hear it on besides the "purely conservative leaning and biased" Fox news before it was deemed a hoax? Fox was the only one that ran with it initially. CNN and the others did jump on it because they were "skeptical."

And, yes, the Obama campaign did offer their condolences and that was gracious of them to do so. McCain and Palin could have shown that type of gracious class at their campain rallies when supporters yelled "kill him" and "terrorist" and "Arab" etc.

"You betcha"

preachlove-As I said before, I constantly flip back & forth between channels. I heard several blips about this story. I am pretty sure they all were NOT from Fox because I listen to CNN, MSNBC as well as ABC, NBC, CBS, as well as radio outlets-including NPR.

Regarding the TV-most of the time I am not "watching" but listening as I do something else, so I will concede that it is possible I am mistaken as to sources if I was not paying full attention to what channel was on.

However, I also heard on that 1st day, before it was deemed a hoax on the 2nd day, at least one talking head say something to the effect of "This story is very strange & it seems suspicious that the victim has not sought medical treatment, so we'll have to wait & see how this plays out".

I remember that comment specifically because I had the same feeling. It was one of the first things that made me skeptical that things went according to her report(i.e.it got my antennae twitching)-the refusal of medical attention.

But, then, according to your information that Fox was the only outlet initially running w/ this story, this comment of doubt had to be on Fox as well.

And as ususal, you again miss the point. It's an endorsment - and identified as such. Republicans are great at distracting from the point. The NY Times endorsment (not a blog), which was identified, was thought out. Will the Newsless Courier do the same when it endorses McSame? No, it will be like your diatribes, short on reasoning long on its usual blather of republicans good, democrats bad.

How dare you compare a murderer, sentenced to death to....The 5 Step Partial Birth Abortion procedure

This is an innocent child that hasn't done anything to anyone. And "YOU" claim to be a christian.

And I didn't write the post a BLACK musician did. I just copied it just for you.

I am also not a true South Carolinian. I am from Newark NJ and I know the ghetto. So wipe your tears and grow out of the past. You are no longer a slave. In fact you never were. I know many black men that have raised up out of the ghetto. Not my problem if you don't know how.

Also know many white boys who have gone though the same thing you are talking about.
It is not about black or white.

ObamaBinBiden or McCain is so old he's Palin...

Socialist/Marxist or Liberal/Moderate pretending to be GOP?

I'll go with the old dude that has a strong rooted maverick GOP future first female POTUS

McInsane isn't near the maverick Palin is... she has a real future and this country will be extremely lucky to have her as POTUS in 2012

you people voting for the Obamanation have no clue what you are voting for, and if he wins you will regret that vote until the day you die... which may be sooner than you think under his leadership

the dude isn't even allowed by our constitution to run for POTUS because he isn't a natural born citizen, with two different lawsuits against him to prove it before the election because he refuses to bring out his real birth certificate

how can you look over that??? that's like throwing our entire constitution away because you're too scared someone will call you a racist for pointing out the fact that he isn't qualified???

and you people are OK with throwing our constitution out the window??

wow.... where do you go from there...

preachlove, had it been a black woman Obama supporter with a M carved in her face I would have been just as outraged if it had been true

that's a humanity issue, not a race issue

12% of the population is responsible for over 70% of the crime, 90% of Black Americans will vote for Obama makes it more believable that it might have been a black male... that wasn't racist, it was merely an attempt to make it more believable

even blacks say they worry when they hear footsteps behind them until they look back and see it's just a white guy

now had that been a black women with an M carved on her face that LIE would have been published worldwide by the mass media in seconds... just as the Duke Lacrosse LIE was

that was a lie of opportunity, not racism... still wrong of course, but she tried to make it more believable

Again EvilGenius, you tip toe around the fact you were WRONG again. A blog is not the NY TImes. NY Times is a paper of record, like the International Herald Tribune, Washington Post, the LA Times, the Chicago Tribune. Americanthinker.com is a partisan right wing nut blog created to spread propaganda to the unthinking.
Still you ignore the issue, will the inevitable endorsment of McBush./ Caraboo Barbie by the Newsless-Courier compare with the NY Times endorsment in terms of its reasoning. The Newsless-Courier would endorse a Caraboo as long as it has an "R" next to its name. Either way anyone who reads this paper can expect the Newsless Courier to endorse McBush/ Caraboo Barbie with its patented "republican good, democrat bad" propaganda. The Newsless Courier's editorial pages are a joke with no semblence of balance or thinking, just the same old rehash of republican talking points.

wow mkris, I don't think I can think of another time in history that someone was so ridiculously outspent and was only single digits behind in bogus polls... gee that should give you warm fuzzy's

Obama's practically got his own TV show and might as well own the newspapers as well, what with all the add pages and television time he's bought... but in the polls by the people he's bought he's only single digits ahead???

I'd fire someone if I were him... lol

the last cpl of days Obama's numbers have been dropping while McCain's are rising...

I looked at the WSJ and its called an opinion piece, not news.... And the Wall Street Journal Editorial pages are notoriously right wing republican, so of course they reflect your point of view. Its like yelling in a canyon... you get to hear your own voice in the echo.
