Young robbers hit Planet Smoothie
Thursday, October 23, 2008
Four youths who appeared to range from 10 to 14 years old robbed Planet Smoothie cafe in downtown Charleston on Tuesday night, police said.
The young males walked into the business at 431 King St. around 8:50 p.m. and asked for some water, a report says. After a female employee told them it would cost $1, one of the youngsters ordered her to open the register.
The employee was afraid they had guns, police said. After she told them she couldn't open the register, they had her open the employee door in back of the store. They took her wallet, with some cash, identification and debit cards, from her backpack.
The group appears to have headed west on Warren Street after leaving the business.

Where are their so called parents. I guess you might as well start early in your life if you choose a life of crime like this punks. I say if they get caught line them and bring out the baseball bat and let them have it.

That is way too young. The parents should go to jail for this one, but the 11 year old pregnant girl still gets the award for having the best parenting. May her step-father rot in prison with plenty of men standing behind him for a chance at that back door!!

like parents, like children! I wish we had an empty island and we could put all these sorry no good lazy members of society there and that way they could rob, rape and kill each other without interuption from the sane members of society.

STOP BLAMING THE PARENTS FOR EVERYTHING. MY HUSBAND AND I BOTH WORK, NO WELFARE, HAVE 2 BOYS, DON'T DO DRUGS OR DRINK, DON'T PARTY, AND WE STILL HAD PROBLEMS WITH OUR YOUNGEST. NONE WITH OUR FIRST. CAN'T STAND LISTENING TO ALL THESE PEOPLE THAT HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM IN THEIR FAMILIES. MUST BE GREAT TO BE SO PERFECT AND HAVE SUCH PERFECT FAMILIES.

What has our society come to when we are getting robbed by children? We are caught between a rock in a hard place. How do you defend yourself? You can bet if someone unleashed on their little butts the ACLU would try to sue your butt off. I wouldve loved to see the victim grab one of them, bend them over her knee and wear their ass out like their parents should have.

Were these 10-14 y/o threatening? Did they claim or act like they had a weapon? The article sounds like they asked for money and they got it.

dhshjh: I'm sorry that you're having problems with one of your children. I can certainly understand and empathize with the fact that regardless of how good of a parent you are a child could still go astray. It also reminds people that not all children are going to think, feel, act the same.
However, unless you give that child over to the state for care, you and your husband are still ultimately responsible for their actions hence still 'at fault' if that child commits a crime or doesn anything else untoward.
The parents of these children who committed this crime are both responsible and at fault. For if even a child becomes uncontrollable, there are avenues that can be used to help. Even if it means going to court to recognize that your home may not be the best place for the child. (not to say that is the case in your situation)
But as parents we cannot just wash our hands of a 'bad' child just because we 'think' we did all that could have been done.

You're probably right coolfreaknbeans, but that would be a risk that I'd gladly have taken. Man, I wish I'd been in that girls place - or even in the store when that happened. I tell you what, if I'd been there, they'd better have had a gun - nothing less would have kept them from an a55 kicking like they never have had. I guess these kids have moved from making palm frond roses (palmetto artisans - haha) to doing stickups. Well, they're about one more mistake from catching a bullet in the chest if they're running around like that. With their success in their first robbery (that we know of), they'll be at it again and maybe next time someone will put a permanent stop to them.

dhshjh- Its not about being a "perfect parent". It's about doing all you can to have control over your child. This may require utilizing outside resources. Most families go through hard times. It' all about how you handle those hard times. I can say that I would NEVER sit back and allow my child to go around victimizing people in the community. If I had to call the police or social services for help- I would. Tough love.

READ THE COMENT. I DID NOT SAY THAT THE PARENT SHOULDN'T DO ANYTHING. I DID WHAT I HAD TO DO AND NOW MY CHILD IS DOING GREAT. HAS A GOOD JOB, OWNS A NEW CAR AND A BOAT AT 22. EVEN HIS BROTHER ISN'T AS STABLE AS HE IS. WHAT I SAID WAS WE DO NOT KNOW THESE PARENTS AND I FIND THAT IN EVERY ARTICLE THAT INVOLVES CHILDREN EVERYONE WANTS TO BLAME THE PARENTS. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW THEM OR THE CIRCUMSTANCES. THE KIDS DO NEED SOME HARD LOVE. BUT DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE PARENTS ARE DOING ABOUT IT? NO. EVERYONE NEEDS TO STOP JUDGING PEOPLE THEY DO NOT KNOW.

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO MAKE A SMART COMMENT? JUST SAYING DON'T BLAME THE PARENTS. AND ANYWAY BRING THEM TO MY HOUSE MAYBE I COULD HELP THEM. THERE IS STILL HOPE FOR THEM. BUT MAYBE NOT FOR YOU.

So you proved my point. If you are a proactive, involved and a good parent you have your kids in check.

BUT HE WENT THROUGH BAD TIMES FIRST AND THAT DOESN'T MEAN I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT.
I GUESS THAT WHEN MY SON WAS GOING THROUGH HIS "TOUGH TIMES" I SHOULD HAVE BEEN ARRESTED AND HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PUT AWAY FOR LIFE AS THE COMMENTS SUGGEST.
PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN A LOT EASIER FOR ME IF THAT HAD BEEN DONE.
BUT NOW HE IS A PRODUCTIVE MEMBER OF SOCIETY.
MY ONLY POINT IS DON'T BLAME PARENTS EVERYTIME SOMETHING GOES WRONG WITHOUT KNOWING THE TRUE STORY. AND ESPECIALLY DON'T GIVE UP ON THE KIDS. THEY ARE OUR FUTURE.

10 to 14 year olds can't keep secrets. Word will be out soon on who did this when they start bragging. Put each minor in jail for six months minimum. None of that youthful offender jazz, please. I can hear their mommas now: "Don't take away my baby! Aaaaahhh!"
