Clyburn: Obama has shot in S.C.

The Post and Courier
Thursday, October 23, 2008

U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn said Barack Obama could win South Carolina, especially if he decides to pay a visit.

photo

U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn

"It would have a tremendous impact," Clyburn said of a possible Obama visit before Election Day.

"I think if he were to come to this state even one time between now and the election, he could very well carry this state. I think he needs a bump, so to speak."

South Carolina has long been considered deep red turf, a solid state for Republican John McCain, and Obama has not visited here since the January primary.

Obama's most recent campaign schedule shows no stops for him in the South through Saturday, but vice presidential candidate Joe Biden is scheduled to make three stops in North Carolina today.

Clay Middleton, Obama's South Carolina political director, said he has asked that Obama visit here, "but we just don't know if he'll be able to come. We're hoping."

Obama surrogates such as TV Judge Glenda Hatchett and actress Phylicia Rashad plan to campaign here for Obama.

Rashad will be in Charleston on Tuesday, Middleton said.

Clyburn said the nation's financial meltdown and tumbling stock market have improved Obama's odds here.

"I think it's still a long shot, but it's not as long a shot today as it was a month ago," he said. "People are beginning to see we've got to have new leadership."

South Carolina Republican Chairman Katon Dawson said Clyburn has probably spent too much time in Washington talking to his friends.

He said Obama-Biden "is the most liberal ticket to hit South Carolina in my lifetime.

"Certainly it would be exciting to the Democratic Party to have a visit, just like it would be exciting for us to see John McCain or Sarah Palin, but with poll numbers the way they are in

South Carolina, we have a very comfortable lead and we're working very hard to keep it that way."

Clyburn also said Democrats have a good chance on Nov. 4 of picking up one of the state's four congressional seats now held by Republicans. "Which one I don't know," he said. "I've not seen any numbers. I'll know in a few days."

Dawson disagreed on that point too. "We're working very hard to make sure our Republicans return to Washington."

When you say "people see we have got to have new leadership" do you include yourself in the turn over of out with the old and in with the new?
Obama has no chance in SC and you just guranteed that.

I don't trust Obama. He just doesn't have any experience. He is to much of a rookie. Then all those strange people he associates himself with. And his church ... oh that church is just so awful and terrifying the way they preach so much racism and hate.

And he campaigned for that Odinga man in Kenya who was tied to the mass murder of over 1500 Christians and the burning of Christian Churches with women and children inside. I remember seeing Obama on CNN campaigning for Odinga. Obama flew to Kenya as a US Senator, and we paid for it all.

With all of this and more, and on 143 days in the Senate with mostly "present" votes, I would never trust Obama one bit.

If they do lose, the GOP would be wise to regroup and rebuild from scratch; scrap the current leadership and, most importantly, purge the party of the "national greatness," neoconservative influence. Big-government conservatism has bloated the federal government, bogged us down in what will ultimately be a trillion-dollar war, and set us down the road to European-style socialism. It's hard to think of how Obama could be worse. He'll just be bad in different ways.

Frankly I for one could care less about what clyburn or obama thinks about South Carolina. Clyburn is in congress because Socialist Democrats hand crafted a special district he would have a hard time losing in.

Serious request for Obama supporters -

I am a conservative but I will set that aside for the moment. I will also set aside the negative associations Obama has been accused of. I will do this because it is so important to my country and my family.

I have really tried but I can not understand what Obama's qualifications are and how whatever they are they are greater then even Palin's qualifications were she to be running for president. Would some of you explain in positive facts why he has any qualification other then being an excellent public speaker. No mud slinging from any side just positive reasons why he is qualified. If you want to pursue "change" please explain the change as even the most far out candidate will bring a "change". I understand this may sound like a suspicious question from a conservative but I seriously can't understand what Obama has done that prepares him for the job. Finally this does not include that he is liberal. I lean conservative and you would lean liberal that is not the qualification that I am looking to understand. What leadership and management skills has he proven to possess to lead our country over the record of others. Keep in mind that "anyone would be better then Bush" would include you and I and please keep race out of it. Convince me that even though I am conservative and he is liberal that he is an accomplished leader for the strongest country in the world.

tc1,

The answer is in your question. If we were voting on a guy that would be our campaign manager, he would probably be the most qualified. However, we are not.

He hasn't led anything, ever. He's never run a business, led a town, a city, a state, or a national government. He wouldn't even know how to make payroll if one of those payroll for dummies books came flying and hit him in the face. Tax and Spend. Then sue the hell out of them when you don't get your way.

I for one am not buying into the Change concept. What we don't need is change based upon the concept of hope. Those aren't platforms on which America can rely on. It's election trickery, and electing the most liberal, under-qualified candidate ever will be a disaster.

Don't buy a Yugo, and expect it to be a Porsche, because it's shiny. You'll still be buying a piece of junk.

Now the word from yird

In the sixties we had the freedom bus riders coming down from the northeast to correct problems here that were pandemic in their own region.

History repeats itself as the northern liberals/socialists once again attempt to impose their will on us.

In 1967 SC schools were integrated without a hitch. In the mid seventies school buses were still being overturned in Michigan in protest against busing while students bused in from West Roxbury to South Boston had to have police escorts to prevent the locals from interfering.

All of you talk about Obama's qualifications (or lack of) for being President, but let me ask you this:

Name one candidate for President of the United States of America that at some point previously has been President of the United States of America.

Answer: 0

Do you really think being a Governor is similar to being the President? Or being a fighter pilot? Or being a US Senator? Of course not! No one has experience in being the President unless they have already been the president. McCain, Obama, Palin, and Biden are all have equal experience in this particular race.

So to say one candidate shouldn't be President over another because he doesn't have any experience being President is a an insane argument. Because all of them will be learning on the job.

"But conservatives, by nature, want to conserve the status quo. They fear change of any kind and do not like it."

There are fanatics on both sides of the fence and hopefully not in the majority on either side. I do not fear change and Know from many years of living that like it or not it happens and can not be stopped. This conservative wants to know specificaly what the change is, how the change will be an improvement, are the odds good that it will help more then it will hurt and at what cost to quality of life and in dollars.

That whole Obama campaigned for Odinga thing is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a while. I swear the smear tactics are REALLY reaching deep these days. If you are trying to smear at least get your facts straight. I'm surprised perpetual p and c troll Jane isn't around yet..

First of all Odinga himself was not responsible for the "mass murder" of anyone. Though he and Kibaki could have done more to calm their followers down. According to many legitimate assessments, even by the US government and the EU, Odinga probably did legally win the election. However, the violence that took place after the elections was horrible and unfortunate and not justified.

"mass murder of over 1500 Christians and the burning of Christian Churches with women and children inside."

It wasn't mass murder, it was ethnic violence on both sides...600 people were killed, not just Kikuyus and now just Luo were involved. The 35 people were horribly killed within a church, was probably the only case of "mass murder" within the whole thing. The other amounts were mostly armed clashed from both sides. As for your "memory" of Obama campaigning for Odinga. No such thing happened, it's true that Raila Odinga tried to capitalize on any connection with Obama knowing his popularity in Kenya, but Obama never endorsed him.

I seriously doubt Obama will win SC, but he doesnt really have to. If he wins NC or VA, its essentially done and over with. I don't put much trust or faith into polls, so I'm not sure about the ones which say hes ahead in FL, VA, NC and Colorado. But if those results hold up on election day it will be a very early night for the McCain campaign.

Wow this is going to be one hell of an election- Obama doesn't have a ton of experience, but neither does Sarah Palin. John McCain and Joe Biden have lots of experience. I honestly think John McCain is an awesome man and has done a lot for this country- more than most. I think his choice in VP candidate was dead wrong. It's not neccessarily her lack of experience that scares me, but more her "my way or no way" kind of attitude. I think she is a smart, goal-oriented woman, but I don't think she has any business being where she is at right now. That being said, I am concerned about Obama for the same reasons. I think he is a wonderful man who means very well- but i am not sure he has the experience to succeed at achieving the "goals" he sets. This leaves me between a rock and a hard place- I am not a solid Democrat or Republican so this election for me will be one of the hardest desicions I ever make.

First of all coolfreak, its "voter REGISTRATION fraud". Real voter fraud rarely happens, apparently its only happened about once or twice in the history of voting in the US. Voter fraud is when someone actually tries to show up to vote under a false name or address. It's very likely that ACORN, which is forced to turn in ALL of its voter registration forms, even the ones that they have already flagged as illegitimate, is planning on somehow creating a massive system where fake individuals named Mickey Mouse and Tony Romo will show up to vote in an election.

Since many states require some form of ID if you are a new registrant, they would have to have an ID that actually read that. Either way those registrations would have already been purged by the time November 4th rolls around. Voter registration fraud is wrong and illegal, but this has to be the most blown out of proportion concept I've heard in a while and it's typical fear and conspiracy mongering. ACORN needs to regulate their workers better, but then again, so do California Republicans apparently:

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-...

And here's an article about one of ACORN workers that was convicted of this:

What difference will it make for SC to say I told you so! The countries worst nightmare may come true.

Obama is elected and the Senate is handed a super Democratic majority! What happens? You can kiss many of your constitutional rights you have goodbye. You will see after Clinton gets appointed Attorney General and then get appointed to the Supreme Court when the opening arrives. You will then witness the eradication of the 2nd amendment. Economic woes rise higher! Businesses are taxed so high they will have to lay off people to make budget. Unemployment rates soar due to collapse of many small businesses. Companies that survive begin moving the companies outside the country to cut costs. The companies that do not relocate are forced to pass the higher taxes off to the consumer by raising product prices to cover increased production costs due to high taxes. The recession will deepen as people will not have the money to buy. People will not have the money to save. This will cause banks to have less cash to supply loans. Loans will be hard to get or non-existent. The government will become so broke that government assistance is gone. Obama will pardon Barney Frank and Chris Dodd for their assistance in the collapse. (McCain will prosecute his own side, he called for Cox's firing). The Democrats will continue to blame Bush for the collapse. This country slips into a depression.

It will be too late to remember that the Democrats have had control of this country for the last 2 years and spending has increased dramatically under their term. It will be too late to remember that this Democratic controlled congress has the lowest approval rating ever. A rating that is well over half of the sitting President's current rating. It will not matter anymore that Pelosi and Reid were instrumental the greatest left shift movement this country has ever seen. It will not matter that the Carter years will look like a mild Conservative establishment. What will happen in the end? Foreign interests will move their people into this country under Obama's 'citizens of the world' and seize American land as payment for the debts owed. With a Democratic reduced military, who are we to stop them?

Obama's apostles need to remember, you can't be a centrist if you are voting 97% of the time with the far left partisans.

Vote for Socialism! Vote for Obama!

We'll I am off, to pick up my passport just in case!

They also had people in jail vote.(keep in mind in Ohio you can register and vote the same day) This is a situation that invites voter fraud. Voter fraud has happened WAY more than once or twice. Don't count on the registrations being "purged" by then either. Democrat Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner was found guilty by a judge for violating election laws because she REFUSES to validate more than 200,000 suspect registrations.

SCdeacinNYC (anonymous) says...

coolfreak, your conflating two things here (and ignoring both articles I posted obviously) I doublechecked just to make sure:

-Same day Registration...which exists in 7 states allows you to both register and vote on the same day, Ohio isn't one of them.

-What Ohio does have and has had for years is an overlap period due to the discrepancy between the period for absentee ballots and the period for vote registration. So there is a five day "overlap" period.

It's explained here:

http://www.sos.state.oh.us/SOS/Upload...

and Here:

http://moritzlaw.osu.edu/electionlaw/...

Technically people in soup kitchens, rehab center and YES jail can vote, they've not been convicted of any crime yet. They have not have their voting rights taken away from them. Did you read the CNN article, it actually says there has been no instance of people voting that should not have voted EVER recorded.

In the case of Ohio and Jenn Brunner, most of the registation information was technical discrepancies not false registrations. Republicans wanted to be able to challenge the voters on the spot about their registrations. Either way if any of the "suspect" registrations are indeed faulty, or plain and outright false, the law in Ohio does state that you are required to bring an ID to vote:

http://www.sos.state.oh.us/SOS/electi...

So back to my original point that Mickey Mouse is NOT showing up to vote and you are overreacting.

GetSerious,

You miss the point that the Democrats have had a major hand in the economy over the last 2 years. THEY controlled congress. They could have made changes but they only increased spending. Pelo-so-loonie's 100 day change resulted in increased earmarks with no significant changes to what the Democrats had original proposed.

The major benefactors of Fannie and Freddie were top ranked democrats. Sure a few republicans backers were in there, but the overwhelming majority were Democrats. Fannie and Freddie are one of major players in the cause of this economic failure. Did you see the recent Bill Clinton interview with Chris Cuomo? Let me refresh everyone to the comment made by the longtime hallowed voice of the Democrats, Bill Clinton.

'Bill Clinton on Thursday told ABC's Chris Cuomo that Democrats for years have been "resisting any efforts by Republicans in the Congress or by me when I was President to put some standards and tighten up a little on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac" '

BAM, Ouch! I have got to keep watching out for those brick walls. Say that again? I am not sure I heard that. Bill, you are the voice the democrats listened to over the years. This can't be true can it? Say it's not so Bill!

Yes, you are right in saying that I described the Legacy of Bush. This happens only because the liberal media wants the public to believe that. The media has become so biased. The misleading comment presented to Palin by Drew Griffin. Cindy McCain slammed by the New York Times. There are the Radical associations comparing McCain with the Klan. The list continues to grow.

In my statements earlier I wrote that people will not remember who the blame really falls with. Much like you claiming this is Bush's legacy, so the rest of the world falls into line with the lies. Barney Frank was the major opponent to stop the policy that would have tightened the grips on Fannie and Freddie. McCain was a supporter of that policy. The Democrats top leaders in Congress benefited from the loose restrictions. Obama got his piece of pie too. And then there is George Bush, he gets the blame, alas the Democratic (party) way.

I am supporting Obama. I've said why numerous times on this board as in cordial arguments with my conservative/Republican friends. What I don't get on this board is people (both Obama supporters and McCain supporters, but yes mostly McCain supporters) inability to voice why they support one candidate over the other without being viciously anti-the other guy. I've said this many times, but it just tickles me how people, like nativecharlestongirl, go on about how they are supporting McCain, but usually come around to why they are dislike/hate/don't trust Obama rather than a strong case for McCain. It's fine to support either candidate, but to preface or end it with why you don't like or trust the other guy completely de-legitimizes whatever you say.

There are tons of thinks I don't like about McCain, mostly his policies, his reaction to the economic crisis, and his serious lack of focus on the issues in the closing weeks of this election and the devolving to the petty attacks rather than clearly stating his positions. But I would never base my entire vote on the fact that I was anti-him. I don't think he's a fascist any more than I think Obama is a socialist or communist. I don't think McCain's a maniacal, top-hat fat cat elitist rich guy that doesn't care about anyone because he has 9 houses, any more than I think Obama is an aloof "east coast elite" because he went to Harvard and was a professor and lawyer. The issues count, but I think what this board unfortunately proves sometimes is that the issues don't count for many people, the people count, or your dislike of the person running counts more. Argue against Obama's tax plan, health care plan, foreign policy plans, experience or the like without personally attacking him or his family. It just seems petty and seems that you aren't voting with your heads rather with your anger.

oh please charleston1960, if anything its BOTH parties fault. Fannie and Freddie were only a part of the problem with the mortgage crisis, and the housing bubble was about to break and in trouble long before the Democrats got control of the house. Read about the real causes of this credit crisis, they are numerous, but this is only a small chunk of the puzzle you are talking about here. The economist had a good series of articles about it in their last print edition:

http://www.economist.com/opinion/disp...

http://www.economist.com/displaystory...

I'm sick and tired of hearing about the "liberal media". It's the media's fault McCain is down in the polls...It's the media's fault that Sarah Palin can't speak in complete sentences in an interview...after all they were asking her "gotcha" questions. It's apparently also their fault that she has no idea what the role of the VP is. OH and let's not forget it's the "liberal media"'s that's tainted the legacy of Bush. Need I remind you that not even the Republican candidate wants to touch THAT legacy. Get off of the conspiracy theory, for every left-tilted news organization there is a right-tilted one. As much as people on the right hate the New York Times, they love to quote it at their convenience because like it or not they are the most respected newspaper in America.

Divisive politics are ugly. Calling people "un-American", calling parts of america "real America, real Viriginia, and the most patriotic" is just silly. There are patriots everywhere, "real" Americans everywhere. And all of this talk about what the liberal media is doing is a huge conspiracy that is only playing into cultural politics.

From the NY Times - "Rebranding the U.S. With Obama"

"The other day I had a conversation with a Beijing friend and I mentioned that Barack Obama was leading in the presidential race:

She: Obama? But he's the black man, isn't he?
Me: Yes, exactly.

She: But surely a black man couldn't become president of the United States?
Me: It looks as if he'll be elected.

She: But president? That's such an important job! In America, I thought blacks were janitors and laborers.
Me: No, blacks have all kinds of jobs.

She: What do white people think about that, about getting a black president? Are they upset? Are they angry?
Me: No, of course not! If Obama is elected, it'll be because white people voted for him.

[Long pause.]

She: Really? Unbelievable! What an amazing country!

Of course, we in this country know that not all of the above is correct.

Blacks do have all kinds of jobs. Obama is half-white and half-black. My personal opinion: The polls are only that polls; they don't mean anything in the final analysis. This race will be closer than the pollsters think. Some people will not never vote for a minority and are upset that one has a chance of winning the presidency as evidenced recently at McCain and Palin campaign rallies - "Kill him" and "Terrorist" and "Arab," etc.

Yes, America is amazing, but still has a long way to go in terms of racial harmony. Very true, that if Obama does win, it will be because whites in greater numbers voted for him.

The word from yird;

I am not interested in being nice or getting along with those that despise my views but won't admit it.
There is no room in this process for "cordial" arguments and even less for compromise.
Pseudo liberals have done irreparable damage to this country and now is not the time to "turn the other cheek".

For too long conservatives have compromised or moved to middle ground essentially caving in to left wing policies that has culminated into the mess the government is in today.
Not one single government touchy feelgood program has escaped failure.
They only remain alive by idiots pouring more taxpayer money into them.
New Deal,Great New Society, War on Crime, War on drugs, teen pregnancy, illiteracy and so on, are all failures.
Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid; all burdens on the budget that are failing and now liberals want the government to run the housing industry and banking, both which were screwed up by left wing liberal democrats to start.
There is a war of ideas going on and I am not interested in cajoling with the enemy, I want to defeat them once and for all.
Obama and the rest of his SOCIALIST ALLIES must be vanquished if this democratic republic is to survive.
I am older than most who post here and I have seen the decline and it's cause first hand.

Moderates only care about the issues, none of this non-sense raised by the far right is helping McCain's chances. The republicans might as well concede the presidency and fight against a super majority in the house. I don't agree with Obama on many issues, primarily his tax and economic plans, but he is not the devil or a racist as the social conservatives claim. He is actually quite bright and level headed but he is just wrong on taxes and will not get my vote because of that. The far right lost this one --way to go wackos.

I realize that I am quite the anomaly in SC, being white and somewhat liberal (I feel that I am very socially liberal and fiscally moderate, though I used to be much more liberal when I was younger). Growing up, I felt quite alienated being from a small town SC and I have debated about leaving, yet I have chosen to stay because I am close to my friends and family. When I went to college (USC), I met more like-minded liberal thinking people, that came from small town SC that were just as alienated as I was. Still, this is a very small percentage of the SC's population. To say that the politics of this state is annoying is an understatement. Sure I have conservative friends, but they label me the disillusioned liberal as I label them the disillusioned conservative or libertarian (which most of them actually are), so we rarely discuss politics.

This being said, much of the people that vote for democrats in SC are the minorities and northern transplants. You also have quite a few moderates that are disenfranchised with Bush (rightfully so, he has been a horrible president) that really will decide this election. American Americans make up 28% of the population in SC with the number being much larger in urban areas, about 50% to 60%. American Americans usually vote Democrat 91% of the time, and being that the case that we have a African American running for office, we can expect that the turnout in African Americans high.

Now, when you include disenfranchised moderates, northern liberal carpet baggers, American Americans, and me, the small percent of white southern liberals, there is a very good chance that Obama could pull off an upset. In other southern states (southern states that value education more than we do, like NC and Virginia), Obama is favored for the same reasons, though there are more of the other three demographic variables and still a large African American population.

So will Obama win still this state? Maybe not. But will it matter? Most likely not. Sorry, but we are a democracy and if Bush did not mess up the country so much, the disenfranchised moderates would not be an issue!

By the way, none of the countries I listed are "socialist." I love how people throw around the word without even knowing what it means. Cuba and China are Communist, though in China I would add that that is mostly in their totalitarian means of governing and not in actual economic policies as they have dipped into the free market economy and capitalism many times. There are also many millionaires and billionaires in China which by definition should not be possible in a "communist" country. I'm not sure what Russia is classified as but it's defintiely totalitarian and Iran is a totalitarian, Islamic-fundamentalist government. Their puppet leader Ahmadenijad is a conservative populist. Most of the Marxists (read: Communists) in Iran were executed after the Islamic revolution that overthrew the Shah.

I blame the LIBERAL/DEMOCRATIC party and views for this.

It IS time for change but not the kind of change Comrade Obama is proposing. We need strong conservative values back. Our society as a whole needs to get back to FAMILY VALUES not this crap about needing a VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD.....that's a load of crap. It takes a FAMILY to raise a child.

THINK people!!! THINK!!!! I'm afraid that change is coming and it won't be change for the better.

When the Dem's fail - and they WILL - they will just turn around and blame the Republicans for all of it.

A democratic white house and a democratic controlled Congress is the WORST thing that can happen....

God help us all when Comrade Obama becomes president..

For what it;s worth, there IS another candidate. The libertarian candidate is Bob Barr. I like what this party has to say about fiscal responsibility and limited government. Democrats AND Republicans (oh, yes, Repubs too!) have created a monster in the US government. It's frickin huge. And it spends money like crazy... Our money... I think that it is absurd to blame the state of this nation on one political party of the other. In reality, the people have created this mess. They keep voting for the criminals every time!

So what then is your definition of bad mouth? What did Kucinich say about America on Syrian TV? Who is going out of their way to de-fame America?

---------------------------------------

Are you really that uninformed? Ever hear of Harry Belafonte or Danny Glover or maybe William Ayers?

I can't quote Kusinich verbatim but he was crying about us being in Iraq and how we had no business there etc.

If you are really interested which I'm sure your not,(you just want argue from a baseless position)you can find plenty of information relating to US citizens putting down(bad mouthing) this country at home and abroad.

Your assertion that those of us who equate socialism with communism don't know the difference is somewhat enlightening. Suppose you give me a clear cut example of the differences between socialism and communism. According to your confused way of thinking the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was not a communist nation.

YOU ARE ONE SHARP COOKIE!

shoelace,
The term or the rhetoric of family values is very alienating to people that do not have a family or a supportive family. It would be ideal that everyone had a caring family, but unfornately, that's not reallity (this is is one of the many reasons I do not like the term family values). What if you do not have a family or at least a supportive one?

Big deal about what she spends on clothes....didn't John Edwards catch hell for a $400 haircut???? Didn't Jackie Kennedy spend tons of money on clothes? Nancy Reagan too?? NOT important issues.

What about all the money Comrade Obama is spending on his campaign? Do you think he's buying suits off the rack at the Men's Warehouse???

Couldn't all of this money be put to better use????

Now, how have these two (not that Palin is running for Pres) spent their states' money? Which is more fiscally conservative? THAT should be the issue.

I really wish when McCain was asked if the two running mates were qualified to become Commander in Chief he had pointed out that Comrade Obama's running mate is far more qualified than Comrade Obama is!! That would have been a classic comment...and true too!!

coolfreaknbeans, its not fraud buts illegal depending on the state. In Ohio, you have to show your ID, end of story. In SC, I think a voter registration card is sufficient but NOT if you are a: first time voter, registered to vote by mail or did not submit proof of ID with your application.

So, you must be talking about voting in SC, I assume you've voted prior to that time of not showing ID and hence was not required to show ID, in that case, I think we still need not worry that Mickey Mouse will show up to vote with a registration card and ID in hand, if he does, kindly take photographs.

McCain called for Fox to be fired. Last I checked he was a Republican. I know both parties are to blame. The Democratic leaders always push the fault on Bush. Then push the 'THAT WAS EASY' button. Dot.com failure, 911, recent plunge in the markets are not Bush. The Democrats helped with this fiasco. Yes there are a lot of factors that caused it. It was the mortgage crisis that bared the cards. Fannie and Freddie were a piece of the pie that caused it. However, it was a major part because of the ties with several banking institutions that fell with it. People were given loans they could not afford. Sub-prime was a joke! The greedy people that ran the organizations need to be held accountable. Forget party affiliation. JAIL TIME works for me. Let them talk with Bernie Ebbers for the next 25 years. Take their massive greed profits and repair this mess. Frank and Dodd should get the cell next to Cox.

There is a biased liberal media out there. Is that why McCain is behind? No. He is missing the talking points of the economy. One being: You don't raise taxes during a recession.
Here is my point.
Obama said, "And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
See if you can find the same type of coverage on this by MSNBC or CNN as they do with the words of McCain and Palin. Murtha calls them racists and the rednecks. Obama follows with that and it dies out. Did he diagnose this using his sociology degree or from his conversations with Rev. Jeremiah 'GD America' Wright? It sure would have been expected of Wright.

The NYT reported it but built the story that his words were ill chosen. I guess Sarah Palin's words are never ill chosen? The LIBERAL media is only representing the bad of McCain's campaign and washes Obama and Biden bad comments as 'misconstrued'. Even in your attempt to quote Palin. Is there an actual quote in there somewhere? Palin did not say... oh wait, I get it! Your words were ill-chosen or somehow 'misconstrued' on what your mind was thinking and your hands were typing!

The Democrats gained power 2 years ago. The Democrats had 2 years to fix it. They said they would! THEY NEVER STARTED THE PROCESS. The kept feeding the process with spending.

Is McCain clean? To take a quote from the Hertz people: 'Not exactly!' There is truth in that he backed reform of Fannie and Freddie when he WAS the Maverick during Clinton's administration. Clinton can validate that for you.

Vote for Socialism! Vote for Obama!

This has been the worst election year I have witnessed and I will be glad when it's over. They can't pay everyone off to keep their mouths shut. They have acted like a bunch of school kids saying well he did this...and I didn't do it he did. I think they both should be canned for their remarks, and innuendos.
The dignified one would have kept his mouth shut and stayed on track. But neither can keep their mouths SHUT. Neither have given us anything but grief this election. I have come to believe neither are qualified to run this country. Yes I am scared for our Country....and we all shall see.

SCdeacinNYC (anonymous) says...

McCain called for COX to be fired, even though the president doesn't even have that power.

I for one think Obama's statement was misunderstood but true. I think people in certain areas of America DO cling to guns and religion especially to express their frustration because they think there's a cultural war and that the government is out to change their pro-gun, pro-God ways. I however, am NOT a politician, so I can say those things without having to apology for them. Obama had to apologize, though in my opinion he was absolutely dead-on right. And the press did jump ALL over this that quote...for a week we ONLY heard about that...before we ONLY heard of Jeremiah White...the difference between now and then is, for the media they've already been there and done that on the Obama negatives. Remember, he was in a long and tested primary with Hilary, so thanks to her and Bill for wearing out the last page of THAT book.

You can't possibly compare Palin's complete inarticulation and incoherence on policy matters to Obama's statement, which while it wasn't the most politically benefical thing to say was surely not as horrible.

What about her quote when trying to defend being next to Russia as foreign policy credentials:

We have trade missions back and forth, we do. It's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia. As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there, they are right next to our state.

Or my new favorite when asked what a "precondition" would be when meeting with our enemies:

You have to have some diplomatic strategy going into a meeting with someone like Ahmadinejad or Kim Jong-il, one of these dictators that would seek to destroy America or her allies. It is so naive and so dangerous for a presidential candidate to just proclaim that they would be willing to sit down with a a leader like Ahmadinejad and just talk about the problems, the issues that are facing them. So that - that's - that's some ill-preparedness right there.

**I'm confused as to where in this answer she actually answered the question on what a precondition would be. Of course she's good at not answering questions and answering with talking points.

October 23, 2008 at 4:55 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

charleston1960 (anonymous) says...

You are right. The President cannot fire him. The Senate can fire him at the request of the President. Unfortunately, Bush is backing Cox. I don't believe even a Democratic Congress would disagree with McCain, if he was President, and said, 'I want Cox fired. Will you do that for me?' My guess is it would be a rare time in the annals on congress they agreed wholeheartedly.

What foreign policy credentials does Obama have? Obama's trip to Germany? Biden?
The problem with both of these campaigns is they are opposite in who should be where.
Obama = No Exp last 2 years campaigning.
Palin = No Exp does run a small state. That is executive whether you want to recognize or not.
McCain = Exp = Debatable
Biden = Exp = Debatable
Ticket should have been Biden-Obama and McCain-Palin.

Preconditioned = 'you have to have some diplomatic strategy.' & 'that's some ill-preparedness' I do not have time to look up the exact quotes, so I will take your word that you did. She has basically said to sit down without a diplomatic strategy would be ill-prepared. Having a strategy before sitting down is a form of precondition. The preconditions could be further elaborated into saying Iran before we talk shut down your reactors. (BTW, I am using the Biden way of explaining what was meant.) North Korea is a prime example. The Bush administration has finally got North Korea about ready to scratch their nuclear program in order to be removed from the terrorist watch list and have talks with the US. Don't know what North Korea expects now, the country has no money to give them. Thanks to the failures of the 110th Congress.

The one thing about campaigns is they are long. There may have been a reason for this. If you speak so much, you will eventually speak the truth. You will eventually let people know your true feelings. Obama is no exception to the rule. McCain is no exception to the rule. The problem is every time Obama or Biden spews trash it's a misunderstood statement.

Here's an even scarier thought for you. Pelosi is 2 heartbeats away from the Presidency!
