Brown, Ketner bring out heavy artillery in latest ads
By Schuyler Kropf
To hear U.S. Rep. Henry Brown's latest radio ad, Democratic rival Linda Ketner supports abortion at any time and wants to give sanctuary to illegal immigrants.
Ketner's newest TV ads portray Brown as someone who spends more time sending letters to constituents — among the most of anyone in Congress — than doing business in Washington.
It's enough to make your eyes and ears spin.
With less than two weeks to go until Election Day and no more joint appearances scheduled, the 1st District candidates are relying on media blitzes to get their points across, though some points are getting twisted or fogged in gray areas.
Still, the one color that did shine through this week was chocolate brown. Brown's re-election campaign used his own money to mail out more than 30,000 mini "Oh Henry" candy bars (his campaign won't say exactly how many) to voters in a sweet-toothed name-recognition booster.
Unfortunately, some of those voters found that the wrapped bars had melted in their mailboxes, victims of the hot October sun.
Among the latest charges in their media duel:
-- In one of Ketner's recent TV ads, she takes on Brown for "helping himself" in Washington, including overindulging in constituent mailing.
"Henry Brown spent more of our taxpayer money on junk mail than any other member of Congress," the announcer says. "Millions of mailings at South Carolina's expense."
Audio clip
This is a radio ad U.S. Rep. Henry Brown is running against Democrat Linda Ketner in the 1st Congressional District race, in which Brown calls her an "ultra-liberal." The Ketner campaign disputes some of Brown's assertions.
Brown, a four-term Republican incumbent, was identified as one of Congress' most prolific users of taxpayer-funded mailings, according to a 2007 study by The Associated Press. He had the most pieces of mass mailings identified by the study and was among the highest spenders, with an overall cost of $177,705. No other South Carolina congressman was in the top 10.
The ad also contends Brown voted to raise congressional pay six times. "South Carolina's middle class needs help, but Henry Brown is helping himself," the ad says.
Brown is proud of his mail-outs as a way to gauge constituent concerns, said campaign consultant Rod Shealy. While others in Congress used their allocated office budgets for staff and other items, Brown devoted his resources to staying in touch with voters at home, Shealy said.

Brown voted for pay raises, Shealy said, only because they were part of the several-trillion-dollar federal budgets.
Even though there were items in those budgets he disagreed with, Shealy said Brown couldn't "as a matter of good government, vote against the final compromise version, which includes funds for the military, veterans, public service personnel and retirees."
-- In a radio ad, Brown uses an announcer to accuse Ketner of going negative against him, then makes a string of charges, including that she is "ultra liberal."
"She's for amnesty for illegal immigrants. For the death tax. For abortion on demand. For gay marriage. And against the offshore drilling that will help solve our energy crisis."
Shealy said the ad is based on answers Ketner's campaign reportedly gave to Project Vote Smart for a questionnaire.
But Ketner's camp has since said the sheet was inaccurately filled out and submitted by someone (they aren't sure who). The campaign was allowed to submit another one.
Ketner's campaign responded that her immigration platform is tough and includes establishing English as the national language. Ketner is otherwise pro-choice and does support gay rights; she fought against South Carolina's amendment banning gay marriage and civil unions but thinks gay marriage should be up to the states.
She does favor offshore drilling for natural gas, and to a lesser degree for oil, her campaign said Wednesday, contending that drilling is not a long-term fix to the nation's energy woes.
Ketner also issued a challenge to Brown to take part in two more debates on college campuses in Charleston and Horry counties before the Nov. 4 election.
Brown would take part only "if she can guarantee which Linda Ketner will show up," Shealy said in an e-mail Wednesday. "The real one or the pretend one, because she keeps changing her positions on issues."

I just watch the the new ad for Rep Brown on tv. Why is it only now he is saying about other sources of energy. After T Bones Pickens spend some of his billions to advertise other alternatives of energy besides oil. If Rep Brown is so smart and always helping his constituents, why didn't he thought about this before?

I received one of those letters thanking me for my interest in environment. I thought that was funny, because the only time that I can remember contacting the old fart is I ask for his help in getting my disability 3 years ago (like he really cared anyway). I told his office person about how one particular judge was laughing about how many people he let have disability and he is still on the bench, how people that are dead are still waiting for a decision, and why was it up to one person to decide if you are sick enough, when doctors rally for a person to get it. I guess that those who died weren't sick enough and I wonder if Rep. Brown is counting on the votes of the people he says he help....even those from the grave!

PW great point! I've emailed Brown and get nothing. Maybe I'm to harsh but he works for me NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.
I was all for Ketner because like you I was all against Brown for another do nothing term. But I want to hear her answer these liberal litmus points. Is she for amnesty, limited drilling, raising taxes??? I e-mailed her campaign and never got a reply back so I may try again today. But if she doesn't respond this time I'm voting 3rd party, which helps neither and hurts both!

I think many, like myself, are tired and untrusting of Henry Brown's shenanigans. Especially after he was caught by the Post and Courier being involved in a sneeky land deal scheme worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Then the way Henry turned overly belligerent because he broke the law and try to use his office to bully the Forest Department. He even actually made threats again them.

That Lindsey Graham needs to find another job, too. Why Lindsey had some nerve calling every voter in SC "bigots" ... that was horrible.
Lindsey has been like a little puppy dog with it's tail hanging out following McCain around. If McCain win, I sure pray he doesn't give that joke a job in his administration.

Let's be real. Neither candidate measures up. This is precisely what is grossly wrong with our politics, when both or even ALL choices on the ballot fall way short of any reasonable mark.
Getting people to understand when both "choices" are wrong, just as somehow inducing them to undertand when and why both sides in a "debate" are wrong, seems to be next to impossible. This is why the "news" constantly tells us about governmental and other failures, which is because people don't have the sense to REJECT both choices, reject a "debate" when both sides are wrong, and insist on one or more new choices and NOT TAKE NO for an answer regardless. As long as people fall for phony choices and phony debates, everything all the posters here are complaining about will continue until well after we die.

"Someone" filled out the Project Vote Smart survey. Right. That someone was Linda Ketner showing all the voters what she really believes in. Then one of her smarter staff people told her that she can't win the election with those answers so then poof in a magical cloud all the answers changed overnight. Folks, listen, Brown isn't the best but he also isn't the worst. But he has a track record of voting for and against certain things that a majority of the residents here agree with. Ketner will say or do anything to win this election, she is a little rich kid that has never held a real job and has never heard the word no to anything by her daddy. Think really hard before you all vote. Who is the real Linda Ketner? and what does the real Linda Ketner believe in? Nobody knows because it's a moving target and I have no idea because it's not just this dumb survey she was one candidate running in the primary against Frasier and now she has totally flip flopped. Also, take a look at her past statements to the P&C as early as September she has be caught flip flopping.

See... opinion, supporting ideas. It's easy... you should try it.
In your post, well, let's see... you managed to call people that don't feel the same way you do "idiots". That's about it. Well done! You've made such great strides in convincing people that your opinion is the correct one. Not.

Tides, I am not interested at the current time. I have my reasons, which include TIMING. Singleroni has shown enormous insight in other posts and is fundamentally correct here, since only REMOVING ALMOST all current authority figures and replacing them with dramatic improvements will work. The key is doing it non-violently and also neutralizing the unbelievable propaganda machine that the entrenched have at their disposal.
spankherbuns constantly gets roasted by most posters. Another inherent trait of some people that poses a problem is typified by this poster, who seems incapable of listening, learning, adapting, and improving him or her self, preferring instead to scream and argue, a trait we see exemplified every day by many who occupy "higher" positions in our society than this poster likely does.

I love that Ketner is now running scared when confronted with the truth. Go Henry Brown. Keep exposing her for what she is, extremely liberal. She tries to act like an independent and a conservative democrat. She is finally being seen in the light. The people need to see this. I just wish it was not so politically incorrect for the campaigns to call her out about being gay. But it seems to me that if she was so proud to be gay, that she would not hide it or that she would make it more of an issue. But that is the real Ketner, a liar and not even willing to support her own real beliefs. Brown has always been honest at least about his stance on issues, and he supports important groups like Veterans in SC. I will be voting for conservative values and Congressman Brown.

Perhaps Spankerbuns and some other liberals, black and white, would like to visit South Africa. South Africa elected to go with a Liberal Democratic Government. They have affirmitive action, wealth redistribution, welfare programs and lots of other liberal policies. They took guns away from the general population, now only the thugs have guns. They cut the military when the Communist threat in eastern europe diminished to support thier social programs. Now they have no jobs or money. If you go be sure to get a round trip ticket, they may tumble into anarchy any day now.

I actually would love to start a new political party that is committed to term limits - 2 years for Reps. and 6 for Sen. Then, regardless of political leanings, they could actually make decisions based solely on what they think is best and not worry about reelection or party pressure. serialmooner: why is Ms. Ketner's sexual preference an issue? She doesn't comment on it. Congressman Brown doesn't regale us with his sexual exploits with his wife.
If you feel that what someone does behind close doors is prerequisite to being elected, that is certainly your prerogative.
However I'm not concerned about that. Here in South Carolina, there are many so-called über Christians who consider certain sexual positions/acts between a man and woman perverted. But are willing to forgive & re-elect politicians who lie, steal and cheat. They are pro-life and support (albeit secretly) the killing of abortion doctors, yet won't lift a finger or offer a dime to help the woman forced to have a child.
Too many Americans are caught up in the demagoguery of organized religion but aren't overly concerned with the basic tenets of morality.
Religion does not necessarily equate to morality.
I'm no fan of either Congressman Brown or Ms. Ketner. Both have very flawed platforms and have obfuscated the truth about their policies all during their candidacies.
Unlike ColdBud I would much rather vote 3rd party than feel forced to vote for a candidate that I already know will not do a darn thing for me or their other constituents.

She will push for gay marriage and other rights for their cause, which I do not agree with. As far as issues go though, I will not vote for her for several: abortion, gay marriage, her anti war attitude, the list goes on. Mainly though, you cannot trust anything she says, because she changes her status with the wind in order to look less like the flaming liberal she is. So you tell me that I don't have a foundation to vote against her. You may not agree with me, but I am voting for Brown for other reason than just because she is gay.

Some of the posts on here just seem petty to me. If commenting on someone's sexual preference, is there any actual proof one way or another?Where has it been stated that Ketner is for gay marriage or against the war? And though I would never have an abortion, it is not my right to tell others what to do or not to do. As the daughter of a retired military man and the sister of a current military man, I am against the war because it was started for the wrong reasons and took focus off the real issue of Terrorism and where to find it. I am basing my vote on who voted for the bailout package. If they did, they will not receive my vote which means I am looking at the other candidates and researching the "real" issues like say the economy for one before making my choice.

TinaR: Just to answer your questions. Yes there is proof that she is for gay marrage and is pro homosexual. Most people in SC don't know that she is actually gay, she attempts to sweep it under the rug. Again this is more of a personal issue that I feel is important. But yes there is proof, just check out stories such as the Charleston City paper and her own admittance on the issue. On the war, first I thank your family members for their service and you do have the right to disagree with the war. As far as the bailout goes, yes Brown did vote for the bailout but becuase he felt it was the best solution for his constituents. I am not arguing whether it was or not, but rather that Ketner would have voted for it also. She claims half the time she would not but she will do whatever Pelosi says because she is even more liberal than her. I am just stating why I don't agree with her. I feel that Brown does much for our district and has shown good judgement in most situations. The other issues like the gay issue are just suplimental reasons for me personaly.

The reason it hasn't because many voters feel that it would 'throw away' their vote. But progress has to start somewhere. I for one am willing to go through the proverbial Hell to get to a better and stronger America. If more people felt that way we would eventually give the Repubs and Dems a run for their money and maybe, just maybe politics itself would evolve.

One thing I have noticed is the refrain about Ms. Ketner being less than candid about what she really is. This is correct. Without name calling, etc., whenever ANY politician is coy or deceptive about what they are, then that politician does not deserve support for any other reason. The thing that is fascinating is that being less than candid about what one is and what one's true and complete intentions are falls almost completely on DEM (read LEFT WING) politicians. So this observation applies, for example, to Obama, Biden, and a host of other lefties, most of whom will not be appearing on the ballot here.

If the deep South continues to vote the way it has been for generations, we will continue to find our states in the the lowest ranks for economic prosperity, education, and health care.
So keep withholding your vote from a woman because she's might be a lesbian, though she may be the better candidate.
Withhold your vote from the black man because you're holding on to your belief that no black person could be smarter than you.
Keep telling the "Yankees" to go home and take their ideas with them, even though, now and again, one of them might make some sense.
That way, South Carolina can continue to drown in a sea of its own ignorant vomit while the other more progressive states continue to make advances in science, technology, medicine, business, and the arts.
How far behind do we have to be before the state has to start accepting aid from the prosperous states? Won't that be a sad day?
