Items stolen from 18 unlocked cars

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

MOUNT PLEASANT — The key to a spree of car break-ins east of the Cooper River over the weekend seemed to be this: No key was necessary.

Thieves took cash and electronics from 18 unlocked cars between Friday night and Monday morning, Mount Pleasant police said. Most of the cars were parked in driveways. Stolen items include three GPS devices, an iPod, a cell phone, a digital camera and a radar detector.

From the pattern of thefts, the same person or group of people appears to have been responsible, police Sgt. Steve Meadows said. Investigators had no suspects.

Eleven break-ins were in Wakendaw and Point Pleasant. Four were in Old Village; the others were scattered.

Those Mt P people aren't too smart are they?

I live in N Chuck and don't lock my car, but it is waaaay up in the yard and down a long driveway.
even a fool should know better than to leave money, camera's and valuable electronics in an unlocked car parked in a driveway that is pretty much right on the road.

LOL @ Suec

Especially since Mt. Pleasant has been the target of a lot of car/home thefts lately.

Car stereo thieves in North Charleston are using slim jims on older cars without car alarms and flashing red lights inside. You need to get a car alarm installed fast if you have one of these older cars and live in North Charleston. They will steal you stereo when you sleep and you won't hear a thing. You wake up and your and your neighbor's car doors are open and stereos are gone and wires hanging out of your once pretty dashboard. Insurance, sure, after you pay $500 deductible. Don't be complacent because it will happen to you or someone in your neighborhood sooner or later.

I live in Mt. Pleasant and it amazes me how no one seems to use their garages for their cars anymore. People will spend close to a million or more on their homes (and insist upon at least a 3-car garage) and then leave their cars in driveways or out on streets...unlocked! They'd rather leave their luxury cars outside all the time than to get off their lazy rears and clean out their garages that are stacked sky-high with boxes and junk. Makes the MP "upscale" neighborhoods look like used-car lots.
