Nationally recognized horticulturists Allan Armitage and Elizabeth Dean will speak Friday at "Metamorphosis," the fourth Charleston Garden Festival at Middleton Place.

This year's festival, which goes through Sunday, is designed to encourage guests to become more intimate with plants and their life cycles and to assist visitors in becoming more environmentally sensitive.

On Saturday, festival activities will focus on families and fine foods. There will be the Barnyard Olympics and a Dr. Seuss picnic for children, and a cook's tour, food lectures and demonstrations and a gourmet feast for adults.

On Sunday guests can get practical advice on composting and eco-friendly lawncare, such as how to craft gardens using environmentally sound techniques and tools.

At Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, "Autumn on the Ashley: A Lowcountry Horticultural Fair," takes place Saturday as well as Oct. 25-26 and Nov. 1-2.

The romantic style gardens at Magnolia are undergoing a restoration, and visitors at the fair will have the opportunity to become educated about the project. Gardening experts and crafters will participate in the fair each day.

Admission to the festival at Middleton is $15 in advance and $20 at the gate. For tickets or additional information, visit www.charlestongardenfestival.org or call 556-6020. The fee includes admission to Middleton Place, the manicured gardens, exhibit gardens, demonstrations and festival market.

Admission to the fair at Magnolia, including the plantation and gardens, is $15 for adults, $10 for those 6 to 12 years of age and free for those under 6.

For more information, contact Magnolia at 571-1266 for lecture locations and event pricing and locations.
