Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden throws his hands in the air after yet another three-and-out by the Tigers’ offense on Thursday night.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Tommy Bowden's philosophy has always been to stay calm and loose in the wake of difficult losses, and late Thursday night was no different.

His premise: It's a 12-game season. Plenty of time for his Clemson football team to turn things around.

His problem: At this rate, Bowden might not be around long enough to preside over a dramatic about-face.

If a home defeat to Maryland didn't warrant reaching for the panic button, then surely Thursday night's 12-7 defeat at No. 21 Wake Forest did.

This was a team that entered the season

in the Top 10. This was a team that was supposed to run away with the ACC title.

This is a team that's at .500 after six games (3-3) and 1-2 in the conference.

"I didn't think we'd be 3-3," Bowden said. "I thought we'd be better than that."

And this is a team whose coach, in his 10th year at the school, will now face unprecedented and overwhelming criticism from fans. Wake Forest (4-1, 2-0) gained a huge advantage in the ACC's Atlantic Division race after losing at home to Navy in its previous game.

Clemson's offense, boasting a bevy of dazzling skill players, has now scored seven points in its past six quarters.

Clemson totaled 198 yards of offense, including 21 yards rushing on 23 carries. A 70-yard touchdown drive late in the third quarter wasn't enough after Wake Forest kicked a field goal and then reached the end zone on a 15-play, 78-yard drive that received a huge boost from a third-and-24 conversion.

The Tigers unloaded their playbook Thursday, and it didn't matter.

"We tried everything," said Bowden, whose team next plays host to Georgia Tech. "We just couldn't develop anything, any continuity. We sure tried everything we had."

Clemson's offense is banged up: Junior tailback C.J. Spiller suffered a leg injury with 6:55 left in the first half and spent the rest of the game hobbling on the sidelines in street clothes, exhorting his teammates.

Starting left guard Cory Lambert suffered a leg injury on the first series and was gone. Right guard Mason Cloy suffered a leg injury in the second quarter and was severely limited thereafter.

The offensive line had already dealt with injuries this season and could ill afford any more.

Both Bowden and offensive coordinator Rob Spence said injuries played a role, but the Tigers' offense still looked inept over prolonged stretches.

After four possessions, the Tigers had minus-11 yards of total offense. When Clemson finally notched a first down at the 6:55 mark of the first half, the orange-clad contingent rose and delivered a sarcastic standing ovation.

"I don't understand right now, OK?" Spence said.

The Tigers went up 7-3 on a juggling 10-yard touchdown catch by Jacoby Ford with seven seconds left in the third quarter. But Wake Forest trimmed the margin to 7-6 with 12:57 left in the game, cashing in on an Alphonso Smith interception of Harper that gave Wake Forest possession at Clemson's 16-yard line.

And the defense, which had held up so well in the face of so many Wake Forest drives that pushed deep into Clemson territory, finally broke on the Deacons' touchdown march.

Facing third-and-24 from his 8, quarterback Riley Skinner stepped up in the pocket and unleashed a pass as he was being hit by Dorell Scott. The ball fell into the arms of D.J. Boldin, who had found a soft spot in the Tigers' zone defense. The play picked up 28 yards, and Skinner found Boldin for the go-ahead touchdown with a 7-yard strike at the 5:28 mark.

"That was the winning drive, so it was pretty damaging," Bowden said of the third down. "But our defense made a lot of plays."

The offense made precious few of them. The Tigers appeared in desperation mode after taking over at their 27 with 5:19 left. Harper found Xavier Dye for a conversion on fourth-and-17 to create a first down at Clemson's 39, but the Tigers could move no further.

Tailback James Davis had 25 yards rushing on 12 carries. Spiller had two carries for 10 yards before his injury.

"It's very disappointing," said Harper, who threw for 177 yards on a 15-of-35 clip. "I don't know what much to say, but we're definitely disappointed. We've just got to keep our heads up and keep fighting. We've just got to get back to work and we've got to figure out a way to run the ball. ... We're young up front, and we keep getting banged up in some key positions and it's really hurting us."

Wake Forest showcased the balance (186 yards passing, 156 rushing) that the Tigers could only hope for. Skinner threw for 186 yards on 22-of-34 passing and ran for 73 yards.

"We came into the game and told Riley that one of the reasons why we can't run the ball is because we have a quarterback that nobody expects to run the ball," said Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe, who bagged his third win over Bowden. "We told him to buckle up because it was his turn tonight."

Someone might need to tell Bowden to buckle up now.

Clemson has some of the best talent in the country, and this is how they perform?

Tommy Boy, I think you and Linda will be "Leavin' on a Jet Plane" before too long. Just don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Recruiting will be poor for the 2009 class; finding a decent coach will be tougher. Thanks, but no thanks, USC, we won't take Stevie boy, we don't take sloppy seconds any more --- been there, done that, bought the Brad Scott t-shirts.

Oh, by the way, Carolina, y'all can have Tommy if you want him. I'll pay for his gas.....oops, can't do that, either. We don't have any gas up here......at least not the gasoline type of gas. We do have coaches up here blowin' smoke... :)

My apologies to my father. He wouldn't like me talking so "unladylike". Sorry, Daddy.

But aren't you glad I didn't renew your IPTAY membership this year?

the only reason the tiggers entered the season in the top 10 is kool aid drinking sports writers. Get over yourselves - remember the basic rule - when the tiggers play good teams, they lose. Period>

Horriable! Just can't watch it anymore. Does anyone know if The Citadel and SC State are available for a few more games this year?

True Robbybobby but UsC is an equal opportunity loser... they lose to both good and bad teams!

As bad as Wake Forest played, Clemson played worse - both offenses were terrible - Wake's play calling was terrible - I would have fired their offensive coordinator on the spot - and Wake was without their excellent kicker or the score would have been different.

I did not like Clemson's play calling on the final set of downs in particular. I knew the offensive line would be a weakness coming into the season, but dang... Well, I do look forward to one more win at the end of the regular season, and then there is always "next year".

Clemson looked bad, the ACC looks bad, but USC fans don't pipe in like your team has fared any better. USC fans should be used to this type failures. At least Clemson is treading new ground. My prediction is both coaches will be gone this year. Bowden will be asked to leave and 'ole ball coach will leave on his own. He looks so out of place. After all USC has ruined plenty of hall of fame coaches!

So why can't we discuss cu without bringing the Gamecocks into it? Your season up to now has had nothing to do with us, so why does getting beat two weeks in a row by your weak conference opponents give you the urge to talk about us. I just find it funny because this year you were suppose to be top 10, top of the ACC, best offense, etc... USC was picked to finish anywhere from 6-6 to 9-3. Which all is still possible. We both have avg. to below avg. OLINES.

sbs920.. if USC was any good, your post would be more effective. Narrow win over Wofford is not getting it done. Difference is, we can admit when our team is bad because it is so rare. You guys do not know any difference as 6-6 is great for you.

Enjoy it, yall have earned it!??????

Go ahead Clemson nation spew your venom and anger towards Carolina if it helps you feel better. It sure does look like Clemson and Carolina have more in common than I thought.

I loved looking at Bowden's expression as that last seconds ran off the clock.

CLASSIC!!!!!

Gamecocks
Stay above the fray, stay classy. We may fare no better against the #1 scoring defense in the country come Saturday. We remain a small, poor state with two mediocre football programs. That said, Stay Tommy stay! Stay Tommy stay!

"Clemson looked bad, the ACC looks bad, but USC fans don't pipe in like your team has fared any better."

Moonpie, sit up straight in your desk there. It is time for today's math lesson. Today's Sesame Street is brought to you by the symbol >. This symbol means "greater than." Let's look at some examples.

USC's 4 wins > Clemson's 3 wins.

Clemson's 3 losses > USC's 2 losses.

The symbol of the day is NOT =. It would just be silly to say that Clemson's record = USC's record. That would just be mathematically inaccurate, and Big Bird would lose all of his PBS funding for teaching such lies.

As a Clemson alumni I am ashamed of their performance. They have a very talented team but they just cant deliver. Bowden needs to just leave it alone because he is not working for us right now! I wonder how many games they have to fail at before they fire him?

Posted by ed52 on October 10, 2008 at 8:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Tigers, your offensive line is the problem. you lost 4 last year, then had injuries. its takes time for new offensive to gel. it doesn't matter how good your skill players are if the line can't block. the fix is at least a year away. please respond with football talk , not junk.

Posted by Todd_the_Tiger on October 10, 2008 at 8:53 a.m. (Suggest removal)

"'I don't understand right now, OK?' Spence said. "

Yeah Rob, it's pretty clear that you don't understand. You are one of the worst play callers I have ever seen. None of your play calling logic has ever made sense. 4 year of nonsense. 4 years of bubble screens that leave our players exposed for injury. 4 years of 5 yard slants on 3rd and 12.

Awful play calling, awful coaching and an awful performance by our senior leaders. This team looked lost. They have no direction and no cohesion.

It all comes back to coaching. Thank you Mark May for being one of the only analysts to call out Bowden and Spence for poor preparation.

If Terry Don Philips doesn't fire Bowden and Spence, then he needs to go, too. Bowden has built a good program, recruited great talent, and encouraged the building of top-notch facilities. But, he is not a winner and not a motivator.

Anyone who has ever played any coached sport knows that good players are made great when properly prepared and motivated.

We need new blood. We need a winner.

Clemson fans it will not help you to by telling yourselves that you are just as bad as USC. That's really sad. They won vs their Wake. You lost. They seem to keep playing, you don't. The USC team has bone head penalties and TO's that have cost them from being un-defeated and you just get beat physically. Those are things that can't be corrected. USC is still a mid level team in their conf as are you, it's just that the ACC is bad from top to bottom and the SEC is.......well, the SEC. I don't have a dog in either fight as my team is far superior to either of youre weakling programs but even Stevie Wonder can see that clemson is weak, heartless, basically talentless, and lacking in coaches that have a clue what to do. CU should change their mascot from a tiger to an ostrich.

Posted by surfer on October 10, 2008 at 9:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)

teronce, your comment about the play calling that last drive was right on. It's as if they didn't even try to gain 10-12 yards on 3rd down to set up a more managable 4th down. Other than that the offense did look better in the second half, but it was still pretty anemic. Seems like both of us (tigers and gamecocks) are having an awful hard time finding some offensive production despite having the players to be able to do it(and your players are even better than ours).

As a long time Clemson fan, I am ashamed at the way this season has unfolded. For the first time in a while, I did not get too upset about the loss. I realized that with this loss an era is about to come to an end, and I just smile knowing that soon enough we will not have to deal with this for another ten years. We have deep pockets, an appealing group of young talent, and an atmoshpere and conference that is condusive to national exposure and success. So heres to better days in the near future Clemson fans. The only question who do we go after and when? My vote is now and for Will Muschamp.

I can't believe how pathetic Wake Forest is to give that game away after dominating the first half. 13 points is ridiculous and they deserved to get beat after letting an outmanned clemson squad hang around. Any team worth their salt would have stole that gane from Wake as well who blew countless scoring opportunities with missed field goals and poor playing calling in the red zone. I guess the clemson players, coaches and fans are not worth their salt. What a bunch of hot air from the thuggers and their fans this year. . . maybe next year because Tommy is not going anywhere for a year or two. Why else pay him all that money six months ago?

p.s. "Tommy, Mr. Grobe is on hold for you".

Clemson fans need to come to the realization that they brought this on themselves with all their hype. They can insult Carolina all they want, but Carolina has nothing to do with their sorry performance last night. You fans need to change the entire culture up there and learn how to take it on the chin when you talk the walk and fail to deliver. It is truly sad to see you fans lose, and then throw insults at your rival like angry little losers. Now, go and re-group and get behind your head coach because he will be with you guys for at least another year or two. You fair weathered fans remind me of a bunch of liberals criticizing their own country, generals and soldiers. One thing is clear from reading all these posts . . . clemson fans have no backbone. If you hate your team, then don't read the paper, stop posting and go tip some cows over. Carolina did not overate your team, you and your coaches did. 12-0 not gonna happen. More cow bell!!

JMO, but at this point to retain Bowden until the end of the season is foolish -- he really does need to be fired ASAP. He's lost the fans, the team, rumored to have lost top commitments and you're not saving a lot of money by waiting until after Dec 1. Plus he stated after the game he's not considering changing coordinators. There's not a lot more he can lose except his job.

Tuberville fired Franklin midseason knowing full well that the offense likely won't improve, but he did it anyway to have a chance at salvaging the season because he knew doing the same thing and expecting a different result was insane. Clemson needs to do the same. Firing Bowden anytime soon most likely won't happen, but it doesn't take away from the fact the critical need to do so is still there.

Posted by mauiturtle on October 10, 2008 at 10:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I agree with someone that posted earlier... its all about the line. I saw a lot of comments in the preseason saying the O-line would be fine b/c all the young players were talented, but in reality it takes a pretty long time for O-linemen to become legit college players. Davis and Spiller can't make their own holes and no one can run with a wall in front of them. Likewise, Harper can't hit the downfield pass throwing from his back. So, the skill players are there but the big uglies aren't ready yet.

Don't have a dog in the fight here either, but trying to call Carolina out b/c Clemson lost last night doesn't really get you anywhere. Carolina lost to 2 top 15 teams this year (Vandy is looking better every week), and Clemson has 1 win against a Division I opponent. Also, off the top of my head, Clemson is 1-4 over the last couple of years against the SEC (only win was a last second field goal over SC).

Looking at the two-deeps and recruiting for CU and SC:

Clemson has almost no sophomores on its two-deep and a significant number of seniors.

South Carolina has almost no skill position players in its recruiting committments and Clemson has very few.

Warning: Look at recruiting class warfare in the conferences: Fla State, Miami and North Carolina on the rise in the ACC; Ala, Ga, LSU, Fla very strong as usual in the SEC.

Bottom line: As far as personnel and raw talent on the field, it probably will actually get worse for CU and SC in relation to their respective conferences. So if it's going to get better, it has to be from a coaching change. Without a coaching change, don't expect a top ten finish from either school in the coming years. Bowl victories? Maybe. BCS? Forget it.

It is pointless to bash each other back and forth... both teams are terrible... For Clemson to put down Carolina at this point is ridiculous.. It is even worse that Carolina fans attempt to insult Clemson when they have lost 7 of 9 to overrated, average Clemson teams with probably the worst coaching staff in the country...

Clemson is set up for flag football. Unfortunately for them, the ACC still plays some version of tackle. Flashy players cave in at the first glimpse of toughness. they lack it and their coaches lack it. time for a complete over haul in Clemson which will cost them $$$. rebuild and regroup but you are now behind UNC, WAKE, Fla St, Miami, GT. Too little too late and now you are 4+ years away from competing for the div.

lc, if I'm not mistaken there's never been a Metro Conference for football, only basketball. When the SC basketball team was in the Metro, the football team was an independant. But sorry, you were saying about facts....Here's a fact, the reason Danny Ford had so much success was because he paid for his players, fact, Remove the 1-AA opponents from Tommy's list of accomplishments and his winning percentage drops dramatically, fact, Tommy Bowden has been at Clemson for 10 years, enrollment 20k, no ACC Champs, Jim Grobe has been at Wake for I think 6 and he has one, total enrollment 4k. The fact that Clemson is awful has very little to do with SC, in fact we're the main reason Tommy has lasted this long, dropping games we should pull out but just seem not to. Find me another coach in the country that's been at the same school for 10 years without a conference title, and I'll show you a coach that's beaten their rival 70%, and I'd be willing to bet that fan base is calling for his head too. Terry Don Phillips might be one of the worst athletic directors in the nation. If there is a press conference today, it's probably to announce a new extension good through 2020.

Fire Rob Spence, Hire Jeff Bowden...he's better.

froglegs, any truth to that rumor? I can't imagine why; :) The loss is just the same ol', same ol'. I feel for both Carolina and Clemson. With the money invested into these teams, for facilities, new uniforms/equipment every year or so, ungodly salaries paid to coaches and no review process in place for performance of these coaches. . . . .it sounds like . . . . . .our state government! I KNOW that if I performed like this at my job, I'd be unemployed.

The fans are furious. Those who have spent so much money for annual dues to keep their tickets, the cost of season tickets, the cost of traveling and eating at the games, etc. expect more than what they're receiving from their teams.

Working hard is one thing, working hard with no results or poor results is another.

I'm not saying the players aren't trying; they are. I'm not saying we don't have the talent; we do.

But something(or nothing) is going on with the coaching at the two schools. Their coaching is circa 1985.....and we're in the 21st century. It's the same offense, the same defense. No variance .... totally predictable behavior.

Only Clemson lost last night and looked inept doing it. It's just a fact that some can't seem to swallow. They stink this year. Scar has nothing to do with it nor were they predicted to go 12-0 and go to the BCS title game. SCAR sure did look like an up and coming SEC team last week--maybe because SCAR fans are standing behind the team and its coaches as they build a program capable of winning the SEC title (which is the same as the National title and everyone knows it).

More cow bell please. Who you gonna call? Grobe
