Here are three key matchups for Clemson entering tonight's game at Wake Forest:
1Clemson's linebackers and defensive ends vs. Wake Forest's misdirection
The defense could control this game if it's able to make Wake Forest one-dimensional, forcing Riley Skinner to throw the ball up for grabs. The Demon Deacons have struggled to run thus far, but their misdirection figures to give the Tigers some trouble. Wake Forest offensive coordinator Steed Lobotzke is creative and plenty capable of moving the ball if the Tigers are undisciplined.
2Rob Spence vs. timidity
Clemson hung 44 points on Wake Forest last year, and the downfield passing game was a big part of that explosion. Spence, the Tigers' fourth-year offensive coordinator, has scaled down the passing game in an effort to protect his offensive line and quarterback Cullen Harper. But it's time to start taking more chances in the passing game.
3Clemson's offensive line vs. Wake Forest's defensive line
The Tigers actually played pretty well up front against Maryland, and tackle Cory Lambert has moved inside to left guard to give the line its best five guys in the starting lineup. Wake Forest gave up 292 rushing yards against Navy, but the Midshipmen run on just about everyone they play. The Demon Deacons should present a stern test up front, both physical and mental.
Outlook
Under Tommy Bowden, the Tigers usually respond well with their backs against the wall. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Clemson pull this game out, but Wake Forest is a tough, veteran team that hasn't forgotten what happened last year in Clemson. Wake Forest's defense is good enough to keep the Tigers from putting up a lot of points, and the Deacons' offense is diverse enough to capitalize on Clemson's deficiencies at linebacker. Bottom line, the Tigers have yet to demonstrate they're capable of winning a game like this. We'll believe it when we see it.
Prediction: Wake Forest 24, Clemson 20
