Student, ex-student charged
Witnesses say men with gun burst into room
The Post and Courier
Wednesday, October 8, 2008
Three men burst into a dorm room. One of them pointed a handgun at a Charleston Southern University student and demanded money. He appeared to be mad about his marijuana and iPod being stolen. Witnesses to an apparent robbery gave that account to North Charleston police when they arrived at the campus shortly after 9 p.m. Monday. It would lead to a campus-wide lockdown that lasted almost four hours. Police later arrested two men — a student and a former student of the school — on armed robbery charges.
Justin Moore
Tangie White
The men also are suspects in two McDonald's robbery cases earlier the same day in North Charleston, all while one of the men was out on bond after a murder charge in Alabama. Justin Tyrone Moore, 20, of Greenville, and Tangie C. White, 23, of North Charleston, are facing armed robbery charges from the dorm room incident. Though a police report mentions three suspects, officials had only identified two suspects on Tuesday. White was a student but is now suspended because of the arrest, said Bob Ratliff, Charleston Southern dean of students. He said Moore was suspended last year after being caught with marijuana for a second time and was not supposed to be on campus. A first offense for marijuana does not usually warrant a suspension, Ratliff said. Charleston Southern student Helen Endsley, 23, of Long Island, N.Y., said she was surprised that the suspects were students. "I really can't believe it," she said. "Usually, you come to a school to learn, not to cause mischief." Student Amy Moss, 20, of Moncks Corner, said the robbery won't ruin the positive, Christian attitude of students at this peaceful, Southern school. "Just because we are a Christian campus doesn't mean we are immune to the rest of the world," she said. "It reminds us that we are still in a world of sin, and it's all the more reason for us to stand out." Moore and White also are charged in the investigation of a holdup at a McDonald's near Otranto Road about 4:50 a.m. and an attempted holdup of another McDonald's on Rivers near Aviation Avenue about 10 minutes earlier. Both cases involved a car going through the drive-thru and a person inside pointing a gun at employees, police reports said. White was out on $50,000 bail on a murder charge resulting from the 2006 shooting death of a woman at a motel in Huntsville, Ala., said Huntsville police Sgt. Mark Roberts. He said authorities there are awaiting a trial date for that case. CSU received the first call about a gun on campus a few minutes after 9 p.m. Monday. Officials put the school on lockdown until about 1 a.m. Tuesday. Officials went door to door and sent out a simultaneous warning message via cell phones, voice mail and text messages. Doug Dickerson, director of university relations, said the message did not reach everybody because of a "glitch" that the school's information technology department has corrected. The 18-year-old student who initially reported the robbery on campus said he was in a room at West Russell dormitory with several other people. Officers identified Moore and White through witnesses at the scene. White was arrested near the campus, Ratliff said. Officers arrested Moore asleep in someone else's dorm room on campus, according to the incident report. He told Charleston County Magistrate Mary Holmes during his bond hearing that he could not have committed the crimes because he had taken a pill for anxiety that made him sleep for most of the day. White told Holmes that he admitted his involvement in the restaurant incidents and that he cooperated with detectives. He said that he was not, however, involved with a robbery in the dormitory. Each man faces charges of armed robbery, possession of a stolen pistol and two counts of attempted armed robbery. White is charged with two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and Moore faces three counts of that charge. The judge tried to ensure that White and Moore will remain in jail until their trials. She denied them the opportunity to make bail for the robbery charges and set bond at $500,000 for each of the other charges. She also forbid them from returning to the college campus. White could face extradition back to Alabama on the murder charge, authorities said.

How did they get enrolled or afford the tuition? People who want and deserve to go to school have a hard time finding funding while these 2 idiots find the way, how? Tax dollars at work?

I'm pretty interested to find out how many grants/scholarships/loans will go unpaid because these two derelicts filled out a FAFSA. I am MORE than interested in finding out how murder in Alabama is taken so lightly that the bond for the capital offense is only $50K...I'm more than shocked at that figure. I've seen higher bond for lesser offenses here in S.C....NO BOND on the robbery charges...way to go, Judge! Send his a** back to Bama to fry...

Just more welfare scumbags. $50,000 bond! What a judicial system we have in the United States.
The school had to know this guys background. I am sure he had a free ride to school.
Send him back to Albama and let them deal with him.
The other guy was mad because of dope and an Ipod! Just amazing, but they will be walking the streets soon.

sig,
What does welfare have to do with it? All criminals don't come from low- income situations. Some kids from good up brinings do stupid things also. Remember the boys from Mt. Pleasant? Do you just assume that they were in school from grants because they are black, or do you have some insight that the rest of us need to know about? Rather they were welfare recipients or not, they need to be locked up, but don't blame every crime on the welfare system.

madcity: They could be green for all I care. But their record speaks for themselves. Out on bond for a murder charge? Sounds like a fine upstanding hard working tax payer to me - not! As I said - what a judicial system we have in the United States. Criminals walk the streets and the hard working taxpayers pay for them.
I hate the welfare system and will continue to say that everytime I post. No matter what their race or gender. There are folks out there that need help and do not receive it. No, I have not ever applied for welfare and hope I never have to.

White was out on $50,000 bond and he was still a student at CSU until this arrest....how is that possible??? I attended CSU so I know their policy well. If the other guy was suspended because of marijuanna, how did White still get to attend with murder charges? That makes no sense.

"White was a student but is now suspended because of the arrest"
So he was allowed to be a student there on bail with a murder charge? Did they not know about this?

My question is if Alabama allowed White to leave the state, usually with bond you are not allowed to do so without the solicitors office allowing it, why was he not under some supervision here? Wouldn't he have to check in with an officer of the court in Charleston? Not that it would curtail him from committing crimes. But I'm still confused how this man could just go about his daily criminal activities without someone noticing he was out and about. I would think if you were accused of murder and allowed to move to another state, you would have to make check-ins on a regular basis. Check in before classes, after classes, in the evening, wear a monitoring device and once suspended why was no one notified to remove him from SC back to Alabama? Seems like again the justice system has cracks that are inexcusable. I just don't understand it.

I appreciate everyone's comments and agree with most. However - we're missing one important issue - one I consider to be most important.
"the message did not reach everybody because of a "glitch" that the school's information technology department has corrected."
My daughter is a student there and the topic has taken up both of her classes this morning. It appears that the message didn't reach most of the students including the ones that live on campus.

If this guy was allowed admission into the school with amurder charge, he probably lied on his application about being charged with or convicted for anything beyond a traffic violation.
Proud: Do they not test the system periodically? I am a student at MUSC and they test ours once a semester. I get an e-mail, a text message, and a phone call. If they don't test it, they should start so this doesn't happen again.

Most of the drug dealers in Charleston use nicknames, as most of you probably know. If a student goes to college on a football scholarship and is an asset to the footall team, he is usually given a slap on the wrist. There are a couple of local boys who have constantly been in trouble with the law for dealing drugs and still play football for out of state colleges. One of them was dropped for a season until he went to a local college and got 'x' number of credits and stayed out of trouble for ''x' amount of time then the out of state college accepted him back. The other one, I hear, is a well known NFL football player. Kinda makes you wonder how the system works, huh ? (This is hearsay but I have heard this from more than one source.)

TO ALL THE RACIST POST: I am so glad to be a black man that is not responsible for the actions of others that happen to look like me. If it serves me correct, I was brought into this world alone and will be leaving by my d@mn self. How is it that I am blamed for the actions of other idiots that just so happen to look like me. I wonder if all young white men are blamed for the columbine shootings, any of the school shootings, the neighborhood meth lab, etc..I know they must get tired of this. How About the young white females? They must get tired of being suspected of RAPING yet another elementary or middle school aged child when their supposed to be teaching them. Man, we have too many generalities in our communities for this to continue. Yeah and I agree that we must do something about welfare too. Too many people are getting over, BUT WHAT THE H$LL DOES THAT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH oBAMA??? Did you not watch the debate and hear what he said?

Coldbeer: "Again from the article: "Student Amy Moss, 20, of Moncks Corner, said the robbery won't ruin the positive, Christian attitude of students at this peaceful, Southern school."
Um, the people that were arrested for the armed robberies and even murder also have that same "christian attitude". So much for the “taking god out of schools” argument…"
CSU does not require the students to be of a certain religion to attend. Meaning not all csu students are christians. I am a studnet at csu and we have a very wide range of cultures and beliefs. CSU allows us to learn and live in a christian environment but does not force us to conform to a certain view. Although I do not like the fact that this unfortunate event happened, I have not lost my faith in CSU.

I agree with Kontact, the negative comments about young black men need to cease. Your race doesn't determine your future. Two young college students committed a crime. point blank. Race, gender, economic status or political views, has nothing to do with it. These student should be punished like any other AMERICAN citizen...and the last time I checked hanging is not legal on American soil.....

We can only blame ourselves as American's (white or otherwise).... we LET this happen, by catering to the minorities, and LETTING them have so much power. Power should be earned. Earned by educated citizens, regardless of color. I will never understand why so much is GIVEN to minorities, including college education. Now we can sit back and watch the mess we've created over the years. So frightening, that we may even soon have a President who agrees with all of this bull$hit, and soon the white American will be the minority. And don't think you'll be even any breaks. The Blacks will run (and ruin) everything.

Blacks are only ONE of the minorities, ... anyone other than the white American has to be shown 'special' treatment. That is crazy! I am referring to ANY minority.... Black, Mexican, Gays, whatever! Their voices are heard above all else. Even above what is right and just. Special days, weeks, months, parades, conventions, whatever! Start listing the average white americans 'special' days? Special parades? Special allowances? I truely wish the USA WAS a melting pot, where we all could live as one, in peace and harmony, without prejudice and discrimination ... I did when I was a child, but times have changed so drastically, ... and it is such a sad thing to watch. Everyone is in competition with everyone else, .. including race against race! It should not matter what nationality our President is, we should not be caring if he is black, or white, or yellow, ... but we DO because of the world we created. We DON'T live as one nation, under God, ... it just seems like someone has to 'win'... when all anyone really wants is to live happily.

ColdBeer, of course I know women are a minority, ... I stand corrected if I gave the impression I was only referring to blacks. I meant ALL minorities. I hate the fact that women wanted Hilary Clinton to win just because she was a woman! I hate that whites want McCain because he's white! I hate that blacks want O'Bama because he's black! It's the whole ball of wax! I don't want a white president who wants to make the world better for just whites, ... who has a background of hating blacks, who's goals are to strengthen the white society.... any more than I want to see a black President favoring the black culture! I guess I live in a fantasy world, ... where I just wish people cared about each other, and we weren't reading about guns, and drugs, and murder, every day in the newspaper. Add on top of that an economy that is failing miserably. No one person has the solution to the worlds problems, we ALL need to take responsiblity for ourselves, and our own. Not watch our kids go down the drain. They ARE the future of the world, and they are destroying themselves.

And Ironwoman when did us blacks get everything handed to us? Please help because I missed that memo. I struggle as a young black man to pay for my daughter's private school education because I dont want her to live the life that I did growing up. I wish someone had agreed with Gov. Sanford and allowed those tuition tax credits that he proposed a few years back. I struggle to pay these bills just like everyone else and I know I work 60 plus hours a week to ensure my family is taken care of. Where is my handout. I shoould be a statistic too right?

kontact, I too struggle to make ends meet, ... I doubt I will be able to send my child to college, why? Because I don't 'qualify' for anything. What does that mean? Why are you and I any different from the people who DO qualify for things? If my child earns some scholarships, that would be her only chance of not struggling through furthering her education, because I don't earn enough, nor will she get assistance from anyone. Like others have questioned in this posting... how do criminals get into colleges???? Who is paying for them? How do they get accepted??? I have no doubt that you struggle more because of your race, and I hate that. But what I hate more is that we can't find an EQUAL system for all of us. I commend you on wanting a better life for your daughter, ... I wish ALL people thought that way, ... and didn't let SO MANY teens and young adults slip through the cracks.

The problems we have in OUR communities is when people generalize us and use one example of us as the norm for the rest of us. We hear part of the story and immediately think we know the rest. What if I told you that this guy got a 17 year old girl pregnant. What should his punishment be? He is a child molester, right? He shoud be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, right? Well what if he was 19 years old in the military and they have been married for 25 years, would that make the story better? Listen and get all the facts before you judge someone else.

I also musst give you the reward for the most ignorant comment of the day. I too see a lot of people black, white, hispanic, etc get lots of FREE stuff. It is not good to generalize. Take a look at the numbers broken down on how many people, by race, receive public assistance.

I also want to add the word Personal Responsibility to this discussion. One can not look to the government to take care of our needs, including higher ed. There are many options for your child without running out and placing blame on other races or misguided info. I for one participate in the pre-pay college program. Is it cheap? No! Is it easy? Hell No!! Would I rather spend that money somewhere else? You bet cha.!! But, contrary to your belief that minorities get everything handed to them, I had to pay for an education at Auburn and the University of South Carolina. Since I want the same for my son, I know that I have to work hard for it and I'm not gonna sit back and hope that as a black male he'll get a ride. I didn't. and still don't. The tone and attitude seems to be very different when it comes to places like CSU. If this incident or the Al Parish deal were at any other university it would be passed off as ho-hum. But because it's at a Christian university that has contributed more to the local commuity over the past 40 years than most know then it's magnified.
That sleepy little school that nobody wants to acknowledge unless it's a negative. Sadly we've come to accept that "anything goes" at a state school. Some of the things we don't hear about at a certain school downtown and in Columbia, hmm, I want some of my tax dollars back.

I am from Boston and have a child attending CSU. My biggest problem here is with the alert system. Since the start of school there have been two lock downs due to reported guns on campus. Neither time was the alert sent to parents or to all of the students. Yet, the alert was working fine during the hurricane. I find this very disturbing.
I too am baffled that this individual was allowed to leave the state of Alabama with a pending murder charge. And I would be interested to know how these two got admitted to any college, never mind a christian college. I would hope that they at least had good grades because it certainly was not based on their moral character and probably not community service.
But I have to say that I am appalled by the number of racist comments that have been posted here. I know it sounds like a cliche, but bad people really do come in all colors.

Unless the perps were paying cash for tuition, they had to answer a question on the FAFSA: Have you ever been arrested?
Neither one of my kids had to worry about that question, but it appears that it might not have mattered; either there is no background check on those receiving financial aid, or murder suspects are still awarded money!

I wasn't implying that there shouldn't be academic requirements at CSU...I was simply stating that 20 pts. on his SATs was enough to have his application rejected, but a murder charge wasn't. It was a little bit of sarcasm on my part and I'm sorry if you thought I meant there should be no academic requirements.
