Sweety was my border collie pal and companion for 13 years. We played ball every day — it was her favorite thing to do.

She walked into my bedroom each morning and touched my head and face gently with hers to wake me up.

She had surgery in December '07. Bad news! She recovered enough to still have fun chasing squirrels and cats in the backyard for 3 1/2 months.

On April 15-16, she couldn't walk too much anymore.

My son-in-law and daughter came to visit. While Sweety was resting in the living room, she stood up and took a few steps to where I was sitting and leaned against my knees. I bent down and told her how much I loved her and hugged her. She laid back down.

Michael and Dawn picked her up and carried her to the van.

On April 17: Goodbye, old pal, thank you for all the love and loyalty you gave me.

I miss how you cocked your head when I talked to you. I miss you in the morning when you watched me put on my makeup. I miss you when we ate together and you wanted to taste my food. I miss playing ball with you. The squirrels miss you. The neighbor's cat is looking for you.

Seven years ago, my friend, Sandra, found a stray dog that she said reminded her of KC, my golden retriever/yellow Lab mix. How could I be so lucky, I thought, to get another dog like KC!

But after driving 550 miles to northwestern Alabama, waiting to be brought to Charleston was Anne, a 10-pound dachshund mix.

Yes, Sandra and I are still friends.
