C of C men blank Davidson

MOUNT PLEASANT — Sean de Silva scored two goals to lead the College of Charleston (7-4, 1-1) to a 3-0 victory over Davidson (2-8-1, 1-1) in a Southern Conference men's soccer match on Saturday.

The Cougars went up 1-0 on de Silva's free kick in the 45th minute, and he added a score off a Wildcats defender less than a minute into the second half.

C of C's Kareem Yearwood capped the scoring in the 53rd minute.

Cougars keeper Clark Hankins made five saves in posting his third shutout in four starts.

--Charleston Southern (5-4-2, 1-1-1) and host VMI (5-5-1) played to a 1-1 tie in a Big South Conference women's match.

Briana Murphy made it 1-0 in the 46th minute for the Bucs, who outshot the Keydets 21-8. But VMI's Alexi Staton scored in the 87th minute to tie it, and the teams played through two scoreless overtimes.

College volleyball

Emily Sawin had a match-high 11 kills and Cole Dawley had a match-best 32 assists to pace the host College of Charleston (11, 4-0) to a 3-0 win over Davidson (5-11, 1-3) in a SoCon match.

The Cougars won, 26-24, 25-17 and 25-21.

--Georgia Southern (8-11, 2-3) posted a 3-1 SoCon road win over The Citadel (6-9, 0-3). The Eagles won, 29-27, 27-25, 17-25, 25-21. Jessica Maas led the Bulldogs with 15 kills.

--High Point (15-3, 5-0) handed Charleston Southern (11-9, 1-3) a 3-0 road loss in a Big South matchup. The Panthers won, 25-17, 25-17, 25-19. Emily Libertow-ski led the Bucs with 12 kills.

College cross country

The Citadel women and men placed third and fourth, respectively, in the FLrunners.com Invitational in Titusville, Fla. Katheryn Gatewood placed 14th individually to lead the Bulldogs women in a time of 19 minutes, 29 seconds. The Citadel's Brendan Kight was eighth in the men's race in 26:53.
