Roulette grabs Sailfish Slam lead

Roulette, owned by Richard Pingree and captained by Mike Glaesner, used the first of its two allotted fishing days to take the lead Friday in the second annual Sailfish Slam fishing tournament out of the Charleston City Marina.

Roulette finished the day with eight sailfish releases, two better than second-place NOFA, captained by Will Freeman. Cookie Monster, owned by Chris Ravenel and captained by Thomas Morrison, is third with five releases. Reel Jim, a North Carolina boat, also had five releases but Cookie Monster has the advantage based on catching its five fish first.

All 19 boats entered in the tournament fished Friday and released a total of 48 sailfish, bringing the tournament tally to 49. Seventeen boats are eligible to fish today's final round of the tournament.

Volleyball

Setter Cole Dawley dished out 35 assists and added four blocks while Emily Sawin had 11 kills and nine digs as the College of Charleston clipped Georgia Southern 25-14, 25-15, 25-19 in a Southern Conference match. Emily Shelton had 16 digs for the Cougars (10-5, 3-0).

Georgia Southern falls to 7-11, 1-3.

--Charleston Southern defeated North Carolina Central 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 in Durham, N.C.

Amanda Hill had13 kills for CSU (11-8), while Sam Sasan had 14 digs.

N.C. Central fell to 4-18.

Soccer

The College of Charleston men host Southern Conference foe Davidson at 4 p.m. today at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium. Also, the game will be the Cougars' annual alumni match. Along with the game, a pre-game tailgate gathering will be held at Patriots Point.

The Cougars (6-4, 0-1 SoCon) dropped their conference opener at Appalachian State, 3-0, on Wednesday.

--The College of Charleston women and Elon battled to a 1-1, double-overtime draw in Elon, N.C. Katie Browne headed in a corner kick from Julie Romanik for the Cougars 8-2-2, 1-1-1 SoCon). Elon goes to 4-4-2, 0-2-1 in the SoCon.
