Hawks hammer Warriors

The Post and Courier
Saturday, October 4, 2008

HANAHAN — Hanahan quarterback Bryce Hines had a nice game for the Hawks in their 31-7 victory over Waccamaw on Friday night at Wiley Knight Stadium. But make no mistake about it — he had plenty of help.

Hanahan also got big plays on defense and special teams in dominating the Warriors in the Region 7-AA opener for both teams.

"It's always nice when you win," said Hanahan coach Charlie Patterson, "but there were some things we could have done better. We're going to keep working."

If Hines gets much better, it could get scary.

A 6-0, 170-pound junior, Hines completed 12 of 25 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns before taking the last six minutes off after the game was safely tucked away.

Patterson credited first-year offensive coordinator Paige Wofford, who arrived after 10 years at Wando, for helping Hines develop.

"Bryce is coming around," Patterson said. "Coach Wofford has done a great job with him. Bryce is really playing well. He's coming to practice with a good attitude, he's working hard and it's paying off."

Hanahan (4-2) led 21-0 at the half and wasted no time in adding to its lead when Cardell Lincoln took the second-half kickoff and returned it to the Waccamaw 31.

That led to a 28-yard field goal by Brian Warner.

The Hawks all but the put the game out of reach on their next possession when Hines completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Irim Aiken to move ahead 31-0.

Waccamaw (3-3) scored with 6:08 to play on a 4-yard touchdown pass from James Pegram to Terron Britton.

Hanahan dominated from the outset thanks to a strong defensive effort and big plays from the offense and special teams.

Leading 7-0, a 24-yard pass from Hines to Jaron Denmark put the Hawks at the Waccamaw 1-yard line.

Monte Richardson carried for the score from there to put the Hawks ahead 14-0.

Hanahan's last TD of the first half was set up by a big play from the special teams when Nick Carson fielded a punt on the Hanahan 8-yard line and returned it all the way to the Waccamaw 26.

It took the Hawks seven plays to score, with Hines completing a 1-yard scoring pass to Aiken to put Hanahan ahead 21-0 with 7:37 to play in the second quarter.

Hanahan had a 148-59 edge in the first-half yardage behind Hines was 10-of-14 passing for 91 yards and two TDs.
