Rays add 4 players to roster
South Carolina Stingrays coach Jared Bednar announced the signing of four more players for the coming ECHL season.
Trent Campbell and Paul McIlveen return for their second seasons with the Stingrays, while Jeff MacDermid and Jeff Rainville also signed with South Carolina.
In 57 games with the Stingrays, Campbell collected 49 points (22g, 27a) to place fifth on the team. During the playoffs, the former Lake Superior State star added 14 points. Campbell participated in training camp for the American Hockey League's Manitoba Moose.
"Trent was arguably our best all-around forward last season," Bednar said. "He could score, he was solid defensively and he added a tough, physical style of play that made him a very valuable member of our team."
McIlveen, 22, had 11 goals and 23 assists in 57 games in his rookie season. He also played on the blue line as part of the Stingrays' power play for most of the season. He had three goals in 14 playoff games.
"Paul really came on at the end of the season," Bednar said. "He played very well during the playoffs."
Rainville, a former college teammate of Campbell at Lake Superior State, played professionally in Europe last season for Villard-de-Lans (France), where he finished with 19 points (10g, 9a) in 25 games. Rainville had 60 points (25g, 35a) in 139 collegiate contests.
MacDermid, 24, played the four season at the University of Prince Edward Island, where he had 25 goals and 31 assists for 56 points in 98 games.
"(MacDermid) is an excellent defensive center man," Bednar said. "He also has the ability to play defense, so his versatility will be a huge asset when injuries and call-ups occur in the middle of the season."
--Stingrays goaltender Bobby Goepfert has been called up to the AHL's Hershey Bears.
Goepfert, 24, was originally assigned to the Stingrays on Monday after playing in the Bears' 5-4 victory against the Norfolk Admirals last Friday night.
Goepfert played for the Augusta Lynx last season. Originally a sixth-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins (171st overall) in the 2002 NHL draft, the Kings Park, N.Y., native was 16-15-1 last season with a 2.60 goals-against average and .912 save percentage with the Lynx.
The Bears have two games left in their preseason schedule.
