Reader poll

Who won the vice presidential debate?

  • Sen. Joe Biden 48% 594 votes
  • Gov. Sarah Palin 51% 622 votes

1216 total votes.

ST. LOUIS - Under intense scrutiny, Republican vice presidential candidate Gov. Sarah Palin stood her ground Thursday night against a vastly more experienced Sen. Joe Biden, debating the economy, energy and global warming, then challenging him on Iraq, 'especially with your son in the National Guard.'

The Alaska governor also noted that Biden had once said Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama wasn't ready to be commander in chief, 'and I know again that you opposed the move that he made to try to cut off funding for the troops and I respect you for that.'

Biden responded that Sen. John McCain, too, had voted against funding, and said the Republican presidential candidate had been 'dead wrong on the fundamental issues relating to the conduct of the war.'

The clash over Iraq was the most personal, and pointed, of the 90-minute debate in which Palin repeatedly cast herself as a non-Washington politician, part of a 'team of mavericks' that she said was ready to bring change to a country demanding it.

From the opening moments of the debate, Biden sought to make McCain out as a straight-ahead successor to an unpopular President Bush. 'He voted four out of five times for George Bush's budget, which put us a half-trillion dollars in debt and over $4 trillion in debt since he got here,' he said of McCain.

Palin merely accused Biden of reciting the past rather than looking to the future. 'Americans are cravin' that straight talk' that McCain offers, she said.

The two running mates debated for 90 minutes on a stage at Washington University, their only encounter of a campaign with little more than one month to go.

Palin faced enormous challenges of her own, though. After five weeks as McCain's ticket-mate, her poll ratings had begun dropping and even some conservatives have questioned her readiness for high public office.

Her solo campaign events are few, and she has drawn ridicule for some of her answers in the few interviews she has granted - including her claim that Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her an insight into foreign policy.

After intense preparation - including two days at McCain's home in Sedona, Ariz., there was only one obvious stumble, when she twice referred to the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan as 'General McClellan.' His name is David McKiernan.

Biden's burden was not nearly as fundamental. Although he has long had a reputation for long-windedness, he is a veteran of more than 35 years in the Senate, with a strong knowledge of foreign policy as well as domestic issues.

For much of the evening, the debate unfolded in traditional vice presidential fashion - the running mates praising their own presidential candidate and denigrating the other.

Palin said Obama had voted to raise taxes 94 times - an allegation that Biden disputed and then countered. By the same reckoning, he said, McCain voted '477 times to raise taxes.'

They clashed over energy policy, as well, when Palin said Obama's vote for a Bush administration-backed bill granted breaks to the oil industry. By contrast, she said that as governor, she had stood up to the same industry, and noted that McCain had voted against the bill Obama supported.

Biden said that in the past decade, McCain had voted '20 times against funding alternative energy sources and thinks, I guess, the only answer is drill, drill, drill.'

'The chant is, 'drill, baby drill,'?' Palin countered quickly, unwilling to yield to Biden on that issue - or any other.

On the environment, Palin declined to attribute the cause of climate change to man-made activities alone. 'There is something to be said also for man's activities, but also for the cyclical temperature changes on our planet,' she said.

Biden said the cause was clearly man-made, and added, 'If you don't understand what the cause is, it's virtually impossible to come up with a solution.'

Let's just be honest! Most people of the caucasian persuasian cannot even fathom following a leader from another ethnicity. If you want facts and not opinion, visit all the nondenominational churches in America. They would rather follow someone who is caucasian and incompetent rather than a qualified applicant of another ethnicity. Additionally, if you don't believe me, take a look at Wall Street, corporate America and even the executive suites in SC. As many of my friends state "facts are facts." You cannot argue with the data.

Who's the racist educatormd32? Sounds like you are. Obama is blindly supported overwhelming by blacks. Why? Because of his color; pure and simple. That is by definition racism. The fact that he gets 40 percent of the white vote disproves your idiotic point. If people of "caucasion persuasian" were as you say, he would only be getting 10 percent or less of the white support, just like the number of blacks supporting McCain. There is the racism. Obama is nothing but the Pied Piper for blacks and the tonic for left wingers. A toxic combination.

Seems to me both candidates handled themselves successfully. For Biden supporters this was not such a surprise but Palin supporters can rejoice in her generally gaffe-free performance.
Look at some of the non-partisan fact check sites and you'll see that both candidates "exaggerated" their points often which I guess is sadly just the nature of the beast.

Will this debate sway any fence sitters? Maybe a few but it won't be a turning point for many is my guess.
Personally I think McCain's choice in Palin is such a blatant attempt to win the female vote that it's insulting. Would he have chosen such a candidate if she were a male? Of course not. She wouldn't have even been considered.

McCain has had a large hand in all of the de-regulation in the financial world that has helped bring us to the current "crisis". That alone turns me away from him.

I'm a 53 yr old white male who is solidly in Obama's camp at this point. I hope he proves to be what he seems to be.

You're painting with a wide brush when you narrow the statement down to the color of a person's skin. I realize I'm new to the south but most of the people I talk to appear to be interested in issues. I can list my reasons why I could never vote for Obama but skin color is not one of them.

But I realize race with be an issue to the race peddlers.

Palin did better than expected (i.e. she didn't outright embarrass herself), but can anyone honestly say that they would be proud to have her in the White House? Don't you want leaders that have firm grasp on the issues instead of having someone who has to cram them into her head a few days before a debate? She clearly does not have the intelligence or knowledge to be a heartbeat away from the most powerfull position on the planet. Bush and his bad foreign and domestic policies have been enough of a disaster and embarrassment for the past 8 years. Let's not have 4 more years of the same.

""Be prepared for every respectable US publication to endorse Obama in the next few weeks, the New Yorker already has made the case for Obama, the others will follow.""

Respectable? LOL. OMG, they all are in the tank for liberals and have been for quite some time. I am pretty sure most Republicans, especially Conservatives, are "deathly terrified" the liberal media will endorse... a liberal. By the way, let's ask Mr. Kerry and Mr. Gore how well those endorsements panned out...
Grow up man, seriously.

""Most people of the caucasian persuasian cannot even fathom following a leader from another ethnicity.""

Wow. Someone playing the race card. Who'd a thunk... Nice!

Seriously, Senator Biden seemed to perform well until you check his claims and once again, he distorted the truth and flat out lied. One can hardly say he mopped the floor with Gov. Palin when a significant portion of his "points" were lies.

SC will tilt heavily for John McCain, it's just that simple. Sorry.
I don't like either one of them, to be honest. McCain isn't anything that even remotely resembles a conservative but he is marginally better for this country than Obama.
Anyone with half a brain knows this to be true, despite all the "facts..."

Way to go with the article, btw. Cast doubt on Palin because she mis-pronounced one guy's name the whole debate, but just happen to miss ALL of Biden's distortions and flat out lies.

educator-there are a # of "people of color" who have had the highest respect of those of the "Caucasian persuasion" & been in positions of leadership where Caucasian folks have followed.

There were, as 1 example, many Caucasians begging Colin Powell to run for the presidency. While race undoubtedly & unfortunately remains a factor in the thoughts & decisions of many, it alone cannot always be "blamed" for the reasons a candidate is not supported by a group of people. Furthermore, look at all the Caucasian folks who ARE supporting Obama.

Are you saying that those who do not support Obama made that choice based on the man's color? Does that include all the people of color who do not support him? Or does your theory apply only to those of the "Caucasian persuasion" who do not support Obama?

Listen, many of these comments are so full of racist rhetoric, it just shows how uninformed people are of the candidates. We, as Americans have the freedom to vote for whomever we want, but if you are going to vote, at least be informed of who you'll vote for. Look at the issues, and not the color of skin. Go to their websites, and see what their views are. Forget about Democrats and Republicans, and vote for who you think will make the best president, and start to take our country in the right direction again. And for those of you going back on the Muslim accusation, it's old! We all know the truth on that one, it's been proven over and over again that Obama is not Muslim. Not that it should matter. There are good Muslims and bad Muslims, good Christians and bad Christians, Good Jews and Bad Jews. We all sin, and we can all claim a religion, but it's about following the religion that is important. And for those of you who say he's Muslim, are you yourselves Christian? I am, and I was taught "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven." Luke 6:37. I don't judge on skin color, or religion, I look at their character. Please get informed before you vote. This is the most important election of our time, and you don't have a lot of time left.

As far as experience goes, Biden has TOO MUCH as a long time Washington liberal insider. When the President and VP show up at the White HOuse, they come with a team of advisers, who have the experience. The Pres and VP just take in the information and make the important decisions. NO QUESTION, I trust Sarah Palin as a decision-maker far more than Joe Biden. She's right in that he is always looking back. To anyone who knows history, HE was the one who looked pathetically naive last night. He looks back to the old Soviet Union with awe and wonder and says "we can get it right". Sorry, no you can't. I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight. ..
If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grand parents, you're ' exotic, different.
'Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, a quintessential American story .

If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track , you're a maverick.
Graduate from Harvard Law School and you are unstable. Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating , you're well grounded.

If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate repre senting a state of 13 milli on people while sponsoring 131 bills and servi ng on the Forei gn Affai rs, Envir onmen t and Publi c Works and Veter an's Affai rs commi ttees , you don' t have any real leade rship exper ience .

If your total resum e is: local weath er girl, 4 years on the city counc il and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 month s as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive and a heartbeat away from the presidency .

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month , you're a Christian.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are "eroding the fiber of society.
"
If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state 's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant , you' re very responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate laywer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don' t represent America's.

If you' re husband is nicknamed ' First Dude' , with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn' t register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advoc ated the secession of Alaska
from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now. Glad we got that cleared up

But to call that "church" a church is beyond comprehension. Remember, Aryan Nations is a "church" also, but I don't anyone who considers them Christians either. Speaking as a college graduate, college is overrated. All it really proves is that you would do very well on Jeopardy. McCain is the lesser of two evils. He is far from a good candidate in my eyes. But Biden proved last night just how radical he and Obama are. Sarah is not as slick and polished as Obama and Biden, but that is just the point. She is not a political machine, but a real person. She can actually think for herself, contrary to the left's accusations. She has proven that she does not walk in lock-step with the Republicans. Thank God, because both parties suck.

I just want to say one thing:

Why is it that when Jamie Lynn Spears got pregnant and had her baby, the whole thing was glamorized. Mind you, Jamie Lynn was 16 YEARS OLD when she got pregnant. Everyone was HOO HAAING and OOH AHHING over the whole thing, Jamie and her baby was on the cover of OK! magazine after the birth, and all of Hollywood couldn't be happier. People were wishing her well, sending her gifts, and blah blah.

Oh but NO! As soon as we find out that Sarah Palin's teenage un-wed daughter gets pregnant, OH HELL NO! She gets slammed, she's called a hyprocrite, and poor Bristol Palin gets the poo thrown at her.

And you parents out there know that it doesn't matter how well you raise your kids, it doesn't matter if their raised in a 'perfect' Christian environment, with an abstinence message preached to them everyday. They are going to do what they want to do, regardless of how they were raised.

I'm sure that all of you who are pointing out that Bristol got pregnant before she was married, and doggin' her for it, actually I'D BET ON IT, that those same people had sex before they were married. So everyone who's had sex before they were married have NO RIGHT to slam Sarah Palin's daughter for getting pregnant before she was married. Those people are just lucky that they didn't get pregnant.

Why is it Palin's fault her daughter got pregnant? Oh that's right, I'm sure the only reasonable thing Sarah could have done was to lock Bristol up in the bedroom, making sure she didn't have any contact with anything with a penis.

Okay

But, in an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday, he said he and Palin play no role in national defense activities, even when they involve the Alaska National Guard. The entire operation is under federal control, and the governor is not briefed on situations.***********

Palin was script for the word go! She has no experience what so ever compared to Senator Joe Biden!

As I said previously, I am not a big supported of either presidential candidate, but MY main concern is because she lacks experience in several areas, should old man McCain fall ill or just die from old age, Sarah Palin will be our next president of the United States! Is this who we want to lead this country? HELL NO!

Everyone knows that McCain choose Palin to sway the female voters who are sitting on the fence, simply because Obama did not choose MY first choice Hillary Clinton as his running mate, but get it into your thick skulls people, she is not and will never be Hillary Clinton!

Finally, I must admit I that did respect the fact both her and Joe Biden agreed that same sex couples should be entitled to the same right as any married couple. Yet personally, I think very little of her every time she talks about how important her family is to her, yet she parades around her pregnant 17 year old daughter,(let's not forget Sarah was also 3 months pregnant before she got married too) and her Down syndrome baby as a sympathy ploy.

It appears that she's more interested in being vice president, than she is about being a caring and compassion MOM!

Palin referred to General McClellan as the General in Afghanistan and that's when I started to question my own intelligence on current events because I could've swore that McKiernan was the general in Afghanistan....then I realized what was going on....I had to set aside, for a moment, the fact that the substance of Palin's meaningless chatter and incoherent response was wrong. She apparently got her centuries and wars mixed up.

Quote:
PALIN: Well, first, McClellan did not say definitively the surge principles would not work in Afghanistan. Certainly, accounting for different conditions in that different country and conditions are certainly different. We have NATO allies helping us for one and even the geographic differences are huge but the counterinsurgency principles could work in Afghanistan. McClellan didn't say anything opposite of that. The counterinsurgency strategy going into Afghanistan, clearing, holding, rebuilding, the civil society and the infrastructure can work in Afghanistan. And those leaders who are over there, who have also been advising George Bush on this have not said anything different but that.

The problem is, General McClellan was a general in the CIVIL WAR. General McKiernan is the general in Afghanistan. That could be considered an honest mistake because of nerves and wouldn't be such a big deal IF we didn't have troops over there fighting at this moment and IF she wasn't going to possibly one day be next in line for the office of Commander in Chief.

Would you go to a doctor, lawyer, dentist or acoountant that hadn't been to college? Would you drive over a bridge built by someone who has not been to college? Palin's 5 colleges in 6 yrs before getting a degree is not a very good record of personal education. I know that colleges don't teach huntin' and fishin', but a college education is important to learning about the world, broadening ones horizons and developing an open mind, which is important for being VP. I agree with you, the average student today is not as good as he/she used to be (with many, many exceptions of course), but she was going to school 20+ yrs ago. Personally, I would like someone who is well-educated in the White House, who has a broad view of the world, and has foreign policy experience. Palin got her first passport last year. Heck, I guess I have more foreign policy experience than she does. I know that I have more education.

From: The Nation

John McCain, who has risen to political prominence on his image as a Vietnam POW war hero, has, inexplicably, worked very hard to hide from the public stunning information about American prisoners in Vietnam who, unlike him, didn't return home. Throughout his Senate career, McCain has quietly sponsored and pushed into federal law a set of prohibitions that keep the most revealing information about these men buried as classified documents. Thus the war hero people would logically imagine to be a determined crusader for the interests of POWs and their families became instead the strange champion of hiding the evidence and closing the books.

..............

October 3, 2008 at 11:46 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

SpiderJohn (anonymous) says...

Almost as striking is the manner in which the mainstream press has shied from reporting the POW story and McCain's role in it, even as McCain has made his military service and POW history the focus of his presidential campaign. Reporters who had covered the Vietnam War have also turned their heads and walked in other directions. McCain doesn't talk about the missing men, and the press never asks him about them.

The sum of the secrets McCain has sought to hide is not small. There exists a telling mass of official documents, radio intercepts, witness depositions, satellite photos of rescue symbols that pilots were trained to use, electronic messages from the ground containing the individual code numbers given to airmen, a rescue mission by a Special Forces unit that was aborted twice by Washington and even sworn testimony by two defense secretaries that "men were left behind." This imposing body of evidence suggests that a large number--probably hundreds--of the US prisoners held in Vietnam were not returned when the peace treaty was signed in January 1973 and Hanoi released 591 men, among them Navy combat pilot John S. McCain.

SpiderJohn (anonymous) says...

The Pentagon had been withholding significant information from POW families for years. What's more, the Pentagon's POW/MIA operation had been publicly shamed by internal whistleblowers and POW families for holding back documents as part of a policy of "debunking" POW intelligence even when the information was obviously credible. The pressure from the families and Vietnam veterans finally produced the creation, in late 1991, of a Senate "Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs." The chair was John Kerry, but McCain, as a POW, was its most pivotal member. In the end, the committee became part of the debunking machine.

Included in the evidence that McCain and his government allies suppressed or tried to discredit is a transcript of a senior North Vietnamese general's briefing of the Hanoi Politburo, discovered in Soviet archives by an American scholar in the 1990s. The briefing took place only four months before the 1973 peace accords. The general, Tran Van Quang, told the Politburo members that Hanoi was holding 1,205 American prisoners but would keep many of them at war's end as leverage to ensure getting reparations from Washington.

This exam should be given to all police officers.

Having just applied to join the police force, a man is being interviewed
by a superior.

The Inspector says 'Your qualifications are first-class but there is one
test that you must pass before I can properly recruit you.'

Sliding a gun across the desk, he continues 'I want you to shoot six
illegal immigrants, six Obama delegates and a rabbit.'

The man says 'Why the rabbit?'

'Fantastic Attitude!' - 'When can you start?'

This is why people like you should never be allowed to write, REDNECK!!! Go drink a six pack JANE DOE.

I also think that it is horribly sad that you contend to understand feminism and then say it's about hating men, liberalism, and abortion. My own feminism stems from an understanding of being female in society and an appreciation of what that means -- good and bad.

I really think she must have been mistreated at some time; which is horrible if it has happened. I am by no means making light of sexual assault.

But she gets stuck on these same points....or someone has given her points to talk about when dealing with "certain" posters. When she thinks you are a woman she is on the rape kick, when she thinks you are a man she will turn to other areas. I think Jane, RW and pro work for the RNC and getting paid to come on line and spread lies about Democrats.

But she will not address that McCain is a traitor! Not once has she ever responded to the fact that he gave up his comrades while in Vietnam!

Well, maybe using the word "feminist" was not the right wording-I am not part of that "I hate men club" you are talking about RW- And actually I "think" a lot- to be open-minded and cross party lines you have to think- it's the rich, close-minded super conservative hippocritical people like you that don't think or listen to anyone but themselves and what their "bible" tells them- she tried to censor books in a library!!! and when the librarian wouldn't, she tried to have her fired...she believes that ONLY abstinence should be taught in schools- that "abstinence" stance sure did her daughter well...Let's see, she believes women are responsible for paying for their own rape kits.... she believes a woman doesn't have the right to choose what happens to her own body- she is against so much of what so many women worked hard to get to today...It's our country potentially in the hands of a woman who thinks she can handle foreign policy because she is close to Russia- she should still be in the PTA, not in a potential leadership position of such a great and powerful country

And that outfit was abosolutely gorgeous. I think she will bring nothing but the finest fashion to the White House. Does she offer anything else? NO, I REPEAT NO!!

This by far was the best comment posted all morning on this board.

Palins comments about wanting to exercise more control of the senate is scary. The VPs power/role comes from Article one of the constitution. The VP is a member of the executive branch, not the legislative branch. They do not "preside" over the senate. They only cast the deciding vote in a tie breaker.

The desire to "control or exercise more power" over the senate is scary.

I give Biden props for answering her desire to grab power and attempt to circumvent the constitution and the checks and balances of our government.

Of course reading the drivel on here today we are more concerned with what church, color of skin still(inflamed by dimwits like Mr. Pretty) and other local half wit observations of importance by the Joe six pack crowd.

Both sides are dangerous. Caribou Barbie wants to run the senate. NO NO and NO. If dictatorships are what the people on the right want...have at it. If being taxed until you are bleed dry is your version of being a good American is the other sides view...then knock yourself out.

Of course we can all worry about gay marriage, abortion and other important issues. The congress just raped us with the initial $700 billion bail out with $110 billion more added on along with the $560 billion already spent. Yeah a devalued dollar is great. Let's all hope we don't end up in a depression because we are too focused on skin color, rumors/tales of someone's religion, abortion and gays to see the real BS that's floating, to pay attention to the shaft job we just got.

You're kidding, right??
She's owned and operated two small businesses, She joined the PTA because she thought she could make a difference. She did such a good job that she was elected Mayor of the town, again, after a good performance she was elected Governor of the state! She is the highest rated (popularity) Governor in the entire nation. As Governor, she re-negotiated contracts with oil companies that she thought were giving Alaska a raw deal, and she negotiated a natural gas pipeline deal with oil and gas producers and the nation of Canada that not only pays royalties to every resident of the state of Alaska, but it provides more jobs in Alaska than there are Alaskans to fill, they have to ask people to move there to fill these jobs.

On the debate, I thought Sarah Palin had fantastic charisma and spoke quite fluently on her points. Of course she is not going to have that same down in the weeds knowledge of every piece of legislation that has passed through the Senate as Biden. However, if you consider that McCain has a vast amount of legislative and foreign policy experience balanced with her executive experience, it is a stronger ticket than a freshman Senator and yet another Senator.

While many Democrats seem to decry her executive experience because it's "just" Alaska, I ask this of you. What about another small state, such as Arkansas, perchance? Could that qualify as executive experience? Clearly, there were plenty of Democrats that thought so at one time in history!

It just amazes me how stupid people are. I guess society needs you dumb butts to recognize the brillant one's. And the stupitity crosses color lines as well, just imagine a person of color not voting for President Obama, what that negress is saying, is that he is fine with his situation under +400 year of white rule and that he would rather keep it like this than give his own self a chance. How pathetic is that? you neutral white boys that are voting for Obama because you see the change he will bring, I thank you for your candidness, but most of your people are just so egg headed, stubborn, and lack moral judgement. Sometimes i feel so .........................forget it!

ummm the US has only been a country for 232 years (1776), so don't know where you are getting the +400 years of white rule (2008-1776=232) and you are a math professor as stated previously, right?

and anyone who votes based on color whether white for white or black for black is just stupid! color should have nothing to do with it, the ability to lead this country should.

As aforementioned, it is really important that we vote for the most qualified ticket. In this case, it happens to be the democratic ticket. Credit should be given to whom it is due. The republican party has mismanaged government for 8 long years. While doing so, the wealthy has gotten wealthier and the working middle class is steadily slipping into poverty. Do you think McCain and Palin really cares what happen to mainstream America? I do not. Her body language in the television interviews and debate spoke volumes.

Interestingly little tidbit-CNN reports grade levels at which the VP candidates spoke during the debate. The result:
Biden: 7.8
Palen: 9.5

Yes kontact I'm for real, but I did not concoct the headline.

I'm not sure why anyone would do such an analysis, but I have no doubt that if those numbers/names were reversed, many would claim it meant everything & think it was of "for real" significance. Right?

People are so predictable...usually.

It would be meaningless if the numbers/names were reversed... at least for anyone with any sense to care about actual issues and not ridiculous things.

Yes, I happen to agree, hightide. But haven't you noticed that many on here care only about bashing & belittling one candidate or the other....?

I brought attention to the headline because many have tried to make Palin out to be a total bird brain (I suppose in an attempt to bolster the opinion that she was a bad pick). Those insinuations along with the big headline this morning (it has since changed as headlines do on Google) made me sputter my coffee-especially when I saw it was from CNN.

I'm sorry, I just got tickled imagining how some, on both sides of the aisle, would initially react to that headline.

I am not sold on Palin. I recognize her weak areas. I also recognize that she is not judged w/ the same measuring stick used for Biden.

I wish people could be more objective & honest in comparing the candidates. Both sides claim things about the other that they themselves are guilty of or do.

And round & round we go.

i.e.--it doesn't do to state that one candidate was inaccurate or "lied" while the other clearly did the same thing.

The big problem seems to be that when one is pushing one candidate or another, the definition of a "lie" seems to change like a chameleon. I guess a lie is in the eye of the beholder, unfortunately for the truth.
