Computer classes being offered

Trident Literacy Association offers its basic computer education classes for only $25 at locations throughout the Lowcountry.

Trident Literacy's basic and Web-based computer instruction program, Impetus, allows students to learn at their own pace with individualized instruction. The basic class introduces the fundamentals of Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and Internet usage. Separate courses are also available in each subject area as well as Microsoft PowerPoint through Impetus. Classes may be taken concurrently.

Instruction is offered at TLA's seven main sites in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties at various times. Classes at the Rivers Avenue site run Oct. 14 through Nov. 24. Basic Computer is offered 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays or 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. Microsoft Excel, Basic Internet, and MS Word are offered 1 to 3 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, respectively. Registration is recommended.

The Summerville office at the Trident United Way Service Center on Main Street will offer its basic computer class Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. No previous computer experience is required.

Scary'um Aquarium

The South Carolina Aquarium will host Fish, Fun And Frights At The Scary'um Aquarium starting today through Sunday, Nov. 2. Events will feature a family-friendly Haunted Hike in the Aquarium's newest exhibit, Camp Carolina, featuring a spooky trail and things that go bump in the night. Kids can celebrate Halloween all month with a special $2 children's admission discount for all kids in costume!

Special daily shows and programs will include several events:

--Trick or Treat with the Otters: A Mountain Forest Otter Feeding; Monday through Saturday at 10 a.m.

--What Lurks Beneath: A Great Ocean Tank Interactive Dive; Monday through Saturday at 11 a.m.; Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Night Frights: A Great Hall Live Animal Program; Monday through Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

--Frankenfish: A Great Ocean Tank Interactive Dive; Daily at 3 p.m.

--Creepy Crawly Critters: A Great Hall Interactive Program; Daily at 4 p.m.

The Aquarium's annual Fish or Treat, a members-only event, will be held Oct. 30 from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Attendees can Trick or Treat throughout the Aquarium, participate in interactive games and prizes, compete for awards in the costume contest. Admission to Fish or Treat is $5 per person for Aquarium members only. Reservations and advance payment required.

Appreciating local educators

Barnes & Noble Stores will hold educator appreciation events Oct. 11 to 19.

The week-long event will honor pre-K through 12th-grade educators in their communities with several events and special receptions.

The West Ashley Barnes & Noble store at 1812 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. will host its reception on Oct. 16 from 4 to 6 p.m.

The event will feature many door prizes, free giveaways, educational materials, refreshments, and extra discounts.

Attendees can Enter to win a $500 Barnes & Noble gift card.

All teachers and administrators will receive 25 percent off their book purchases and 10 percent off DVDs and music Oct. 11-19 when they present their valid Barnes & Noble Educators Discount Card.
