Muslims gathered at a prayer service and a feast at the Central Mosque of Charleston as Ramadan ended. Nehel Gaya (from right), Sidrah Khan, both high school students originally from Pakistan, and Zeenath Masood Khan, a medical student from India, joined others Wednesday

Hundreds of faithful Muslims filled the Central Mosque of Charleston on Wednesday morning as Ramadan, the ninth and holiest month of the lunar calendar, drew to a close.

The gathering, an occasion for fellowship and reconciliation, feasting and play, marked a new beginning for Muslims who, after a soul-cleaning period marked by fasting, were asked to extend their goodwill throughout the year.

In Imam Mohamed Melhem's message to the congregation, he extolled good deeds, moderation, mercy, kindness, compassion and charity, calling on people to think of themselves as part of something larger, a body of Islam that upholds the universal human values of peace and love.

About 700 attended the service and celebration, representing many countries and cultural traditions. Some wore typical Arabic dress, others suits and ties. Women inside the mosque worshipped separately from men. Small children giggled and ran across the carpeted floor as people bowed in deference to Allah. Prayers and incantations were intoned in English and Arabic.

Alan Ali, president of the mosque, said this was the biggest day of the year.

"For me, it's for the community to come together," he said.

During Ramadan, Muslims break their fast each evening at sunset, often with communal meals, Ali said. During this time of year, opportunities abound to enjoy a variety of cuisines. One day it's Filipino food, another Palestinian cooking, then Sudanese dishes. And it's an occasion for Muslims of all backgrounds to connect with one another, he said. They break bread together and talk about all sorts of things: family, finances, culture, politics.

In the yard of the mosque, tables were laden with an abundance of food, including meat pastries, hummus, salads and a multitude of sweets. After the service, children made a bee-line for the jumping castle and huge inflatable slide. People embraced and talked.

Melhem said mosque attendance has grown significantly during the two years he has been serving in Charleston. When he arrived, three small area mosques were consolidated into one, and about 200 would show up for a typical Friday prayer service. This year it's more like 300, he said.

He attributed the growth to community outreach efforts. Melhem frequently appears at local schools, churches and organizations to talk about Islam, correct misconceptions and promote a message of peace, charity and fellowship.

Ramadan begins and ends with the first sighting of the crescent moon after the new moon. It is said the Quran was revealed to the prophet Muhammad during this time of year, and faithful Muslims are meant to read the entire holy book during Ramadan. The month ends with Eid ul-Fitr, Wednesday's festive holiday of fraternity and renewal.

On another note of interest, I was reading an article by an investigative journalist (something new) that Barack Obama's Harvard Law school studies were paid for by the Saudis. The journalist couldn't confirm this story because Barack Obama won't release his financial records from Harvard. What a shock... like that really surprises anyone.

I was raised a Catholic, then became a Agnostic, I married a Buddhist and I voluntarily converted to Buddhism. Then later converted to the Methodist faith, and after that to the Baptist belief. The beauty about this, not once did anyone threaten to cut off my head. Not the Catholics, not the Buddhists, not any of the Protestants. This is the true meaning of religious tolerance. Do you think the Muslims would be tolerant of this type of behavior?

Do you really think that the Muslims that met here in Charleston are like the extremist terrorist muslims? I am asking because I honestly do not know. I will be the first to admit my ignorance in regard to the Muslim religion. But to me it just seems like they gathered together for good time and good food. After all, the article says they were there to promote a message of peace, charity and fellowship. JMO.

More importantly, you are also dishonoring the VAST majority of our armed forces who do what we ask them with dignity and honor, upholding the American ideals that have made our country great. We have made mistakes in every war - our country and our military are human...

Taken from charlestonmuslims.com

Allah is the name of the One and Only God. Allah has ninety-nine beautiful names, such as: The Gracious, The Merciful, The Beneficent, The Creator, The All-Knowing, The All-Wise, The Lord of the Universe, The First, The Last, and others. He is the Creator of all human beings. He is the God for the Christians, the Jews, the Muslims, the Buddhists, the Hindus, the atheists, and others. Muslims worship God whose name is Allah. They put their trust in Him and they seek His help and His guidance.

HAHAHA!!

Do they actually believe that the God of the Bible/Christians is the God they serve, Allah? I'm sorry but for me personally, unless their God, called Allah, came down from heaven into the man Jesus Christ, then we don't have the same God!

Allah is the God of Buddhists too? Wow, now that's a man who's stretched pretty thin! hahaha!!

Muslim believe that people are born free of sin. It is only after they reach the age of puberty and it is only after they commit sins that they are to be charged for their mistakes. No one is responsible for or can take the responsibility for the sins of others. However, the door of forgiveness through true repentance is always open.

Only after puberty, huh? That's pretty sad because I knew some boys who didn't hit puberty untill 16! So if they murder someone at 14, he can't be held responsible? WHAT A JOKE!!

People are created equal in front of the Law of God. There is no superiority for one race over another. God made us of different colors, nationalities, languages and beliefs so as to test who is going to be better than others. No one can claim that he is better than others. It is only God Who knows who is better. It depends on piety and righteousness

Again, that is why my God can't be Allah. He doesn't favor one person over another, and He doesn't think one person is better than another. Its like saying, "Only your dad knows which child of his is better."

Man, those are some crazy beliefs! But whatever, if you want to be Muslim, you do have that choice.

Most Americans prefer to live in a free society and live the way they see fit without any interference from others. It's only natural for citizens to critique a culture that poses a threat to their way of life. We're tolerant of others providing they respect other people's beliefs. That's how we can all get along. The Muslims have a history that is contrary to these ideals.

Since you're a defender of the Muslims where they are tolerant? Look at the Netherlands and other places in Europe in fact the entire world. If we don't get a handle on this intolerant culture coming into this country, then we are going to look like Europe pretty soon.

Riptide, what if I generalized all Southerners as being racist and ignorant based on a few posts on this wall and a few incidents I experienced growing up.

What if I labeled all Christians as backwards nutcases that don't believe in science or are intolerant of people who don't believe as they do.

You are stereotyping and generalizing, Islam that you see on the news is radical Islam. Radicalism is not unique to Islam, it's present in all the major religions. It just so happens that radical Islam has become a very dangerous movement in the world, because Islam is a huge religion, people interpret it differently, like people interpret Christianity differently. I believe it will all come full circle. Most Muslims don't believe the things the terrorists do, and many of them have paid the price, much more heavily than Americans or Europeans have. I've met so many Muslims who have been persecuted in their own country by radical elements. People should have the freedom to practice whatever religion they want, THAT is what this country was founded on, though people LOVE to say it was founded as a "Christian country", it was the freedom of religion that brought the founding fathers here.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

But no one is interested in hearing that, they are only interested in seeing radical muslims burning American flags are condemning America. Because while I'm a Christian, I'm not a fundamentalist so I also take issue with literal translations of what the Holy Bible says as well.

So many of you spout off statistics, demand to know why our American soldiers just don't kill them all, advocate legalized bigotry/discrimination.

The reason why we don't behave in such a manner?

Because we are better than that.

For the same reason we didn't take 3 airliners and plow them into the Patronas Towers or into Mecca at the height of the Haj.

Because we are better than that.

For the same reason we don't forbid people to worship as they please even if it strange to us.

Yes some of you posting today hate Muslims and Islam. Some of you even advocated their deaths. Some of you even consider yourselves 'better' than those who worship differently from you.

But fortunately for the rest of us, our country is NOT a true democracy and your extreme views will not be the law of the land.

cool, the reason people don't reply that way is because it's not true. He is NOT a Muslim. The reason people like Jane have been painting him that way is to play off a people's ridiclous prejudices and fears about Islam.

I refuse to respond directly to Jane because she is one of those hate mongerers. On some days I can't tell whether or not she is a paid anti-Obama nutcase or just a plain ole nutcase. But you can summarize all of her arguments in a post into one package:

If it's about Obama:
-he hates White people (even though he is half-white)
-he is a Muslim (because that's a bad thing as she has stated over and over again on this board, after all they hate Americans, non-Muslims and the men are rapists)
-he was a community organizer (thousands of Americans including me, have worked for community organizations before. I worked for one in Miss., most of the people were ministers (both black and white, conservative and liberal)
-he hates America (what a conflicted and complicated man he must be, he hates America but wants to lead the country so he can destroy it?)
-he is a Marxist, Socialist (I think she lacks and understanding of what those things really are)
-he is to blame for the mortgage crisis because more Fannie and Freddie low-level employees gave money to him than McCain, even though McCain received more lobbiest PAC money from them and more money from higher-up directors
-he somehow has a stake in the recent election conflicts in Kenya (you know the conflict where he said both sides needed to compromise and where one side clearly stole the election from the other side )

Yep, this pretty much summarizes her argument. I'm sure I left a few things out here, but if Jane ever posted this crap on a legitimate website she would be handily shamed out of here. But because it's P&C and a lot of people believe that sort of crap and want to believe it without doing their own research or thinking on their own, she gets away with it. Riptide, that's where you are wrong. It's not only liberals that defend people's right to practice their own religions and believe what they want to believe. There are conservatives that do as well. There are many conservative people who believe in upholding what our founding fathers fought for. For you to assume that it's only one side rather than the other, shows how limited you are.

SCdea gives great debate.

wpc - you have no argument so you make personal attacks. I did not advocate killing women and children, so I think I am the better human. Just saying!

The reason why I pointed out about Obama, Jane is not that being Muslim is good or bad, it's the fact that he is not a Muslim. Truth:..you should all seek the truth.

Please....one of you religous fanatics please answer me one question.....

Is there ANY mainstream religion that did not or has never had a period when it was understood...."We are right, you are wrong and if you don't accept our religion we will kill you" period??

It's religion, people. They all profess they are about peace and love and brotherhood.....but they are ALL based on intolerence, hate and distrust.
ALL of them have at one time or another told an opposing faith/belief group that if they didn't drop their beliefs and join them they would kill them. Brotherly Love, eh??

Bottom Line:

Destroy ALL organized religion. Destroy the Vatican along with Jerusulem and Mecca and New Dehli. Outlaw Christians, Jews, Muslums, Buddahs, Hindus and any other ORGANIZED religion. Make it the law of the land.....you can believe what you want...as long as you don't start preaching it to your neighbors. If you ask for donations to further your belief....cut off your hands and your tongue.

End religion....and end the systematic murder and torture of Billions of people.

Having said that, I feel sorry for her. And others like her, be they extreme conservatives or liberals.

To see life in such extremes must be emotionally, physically and intellectually taxing. To work SO HARD to make everyone agree with their world view, actually makes them no different than the radical Muslims they either defend or rail against.

Unfortunately they are too obtuse to see that.

Sorry it took me so long to reply to MSB. I'm getting old and it took me a minute to get up from the floor, cuz honey I certainly fell on it laughing from that remark!

"I am a conservative and you are a lefty!!" As usual RW you answer a question with a deflective insult. You know darned well I'm no 'lefty' or liberal. I've said as much several times. But since you have problems with reading comprehension I will forgive your faux pas. BTW your old standby of using "empirical data" as some sort of shield against an accusation of ignorance and/or stupidity will not work. It just shows you went on www.dictionary.com and chose a word that you thought would make you seem intelligent.

So once again I'll ask, what is a "burrhead"?

Hey everyone, apparently RW's definition of 'lefty' or 'liberal' is anyone who speaks English well and disagrees with him.

RW, I'm a card carrying, dues payin' and candidate supportin' member of the National Libertarian Party. In fact I'm probably more conservative than you on many issues. But unlike you I think about not only the past and present, but the future of this great nation and the relevance of the Constitution in protecting it.

Of course I could go on about that, but it would be above your head. I would hate to replace all of that 'empirical' data with TRUE knowledge.

And this one!

I know how Muslims treat women is digraceful! And as I have already said....it is their religion. What do you want any person to do about the abuse. We can stand up a yell, but that doesn't seem to be working. Do you suggest we send money to another country to try and fight the abuse? But no right wingers wants to spend money to insure children?

Seriously, what can we do to change another religious belief? The Taliban is blowing up schools for girls. The female police cheif assinated. It is so deeply ingrained into their religion it will not change.

You can see that we cannot even change political beliefs!

"As usual RW you answer a question with a deflective insult."

For someone trying to ignore me you certainly take enough time to try to insult me as opposed to answering simple questions like: 'what is a burrhead?'

Egomaniacal and narcissistic? I can certainly see how someone like you would think so considering how often you come out looking even more foolish than normal when try to verbally spar with me.

"You honestly feel that you are smart!" Well, of course I do. Don't you feel that way about yourself? Probably not after I get done with you but nonetheless you must think of yourself as smart when you wake up in the morning.

If there is anyone on this board with an "inferiority complex" it must be you. You always call men who disagree with you gay or having gay sex. Call everyone who disagrees with you liberals or 'lefty'. It seems to me that you don't feel all that highly of yourself or your opinion because if you did, you would be comfortable enough not to use such language to express yourself.

Either that or you're just secretly gay and are aroused by those men you rail against on this board.

Either way, you win RW. I'll let you wallow in your false sense of superiority and let you rant and rave.

Enjoy!

The English aren't having many children because they're thinking before breeding. I know people who live in England. They aren't Muslim and don't seem to be worried about a Muslim takeover.

Scare tactics don't work on everyone.

Riptide,

It's not how "LIBERAL people see things", it's educated people who are intelligent enough know that we don't need or want the "right" to spew" their idealogy on our families. I believe I can speak for many folks who are not "left" or "right" but "centered" libertarian, we are sick and tired of the Glen Becks, Rush, Newt's, Jerry (so long), and so on and so on's of the world. Your common belief that we (centered & left) people need to sit back and listen to the hyportical way of your party is crap-o-la! Please try not aligned yourself with libertarians cause your not? The "far right" just keeps continueing spiliting this country in half just makes me work harder and make more money.

If only my wife and I could ask your party affilation before we are operate on you at the hospital? How there would less of your kind in this great country of ours?

At least we are in agreement on one issue, this dysfunctional marriage between liberals and conservatives needs to end. I'm glad you don't buy into this right wing left wing bird theory that the center is always pushing. Oh wait you're center left? Reading your post I see you don't like the idea of free speech rights under the first amendment granted to Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, and other conservative talk show hosts.. On the other hand I completely understand your aversion to conservative talk show hosts and your hate towards the conservatives. Most center left liberals have this problem with the 1st amendment. That's why we both agree that liberals and conservatives are like oil and water, we are polar opposites and we'll never see eye to eye. By your own admission you hate the conservatives and hold nothing but contempt for conservatives. Your hate and contempt towards me is obvious and I don't even know you. That alone proves my point that this dysfunctional marriage should end.

Free speech and the free market of ideas is quite important to a free society. Even high school drop outs have a right to free speech. Sorry to ruin your day.

Proletariat, RW:

Having live around liberals most of my life, I always felt they were wrong about the issues but since there was so many of them I pretty much agree with them just to get along. The irony was when the liberals started bashing Rush Limbaugh. Talk about hate, they had blood shooting out of their eyes and foaming at the month every time his name was mention. It was curiosity more than any thing else when I first started to listen to Rush around 1993. At first I didn't know what to make of him but the longer I listen to him the more I connected with him and I can understand why they hate him so. Just think it was a liberal that got me hooked on Rush Limbaugh.

Liberals, progressives, socialists etc. believe in the free speech only if you share their ideas, programs, policies, etc. When you critique, oppose or show where they are wrong about something, they come completely apart. That's when the hate comes out and it could be nasty. Their whole ideology has no foundation. That's why socialism has failed in every country. A simple thing like the price of a commodity, in a soviet system they were unable to determine the price of any given item while in a capitalist system it was quite simple the market determine the price.

They also have this aversion to people acquiring wealth and so fore. There biggest hatred is people like me. I'm their version of a kulak. Stalin had this special hatred towards the kulaks in the Soviet Union. The kulaks were rich peasants. They were in between the peasants and the working class. The kulaks were very much against the collectivization of private property. As a result, Stalin starved something 8 million kulaks.

For me, I think it is this hatred of me coming from humble beginnings and making it in life. Their whole existence depends on people living in poverty and not making it out of poverty. That's why you see so much of it socialist societies. They are poverty pimps.
Of course this posts will drive them nuts and that is why I love free speech.

"Eyfart,
Talk about an ego...geeez! Yes...I'd definetly say you are trying to kill an inadequacy somewhere!! Trying to impress a total stranger on a forum is kinda odd sis! Especially if that person thinks you are a moron! Be gone!!"

Once again RW you deliberately choose not to answer a simple question and then go on another rampage about me.

This all started when I asked you what does 'burrhead' means. So I must infer that you are too cowardly to answer me. Instead you choose to try to insult me.

As far as trying to impress strangers, I have no need. You will either be impressed or not. Matters not to me. So tomorrow morning when I'm on a plane to Miami to go soak up some sun I will NOT be thinking of ways to try to impress you. I will work on my tan, read Shatner and laugh at how petty you really are.

You are a petty thug who tries to bully what you can't understand. And when you are outdone, you reduce yourself to petty insults and threats. Have a good nite my little padawan.

Perhaps when I get back I will once again try to 'impress' you with my rapier wit.

Ciao!

I must agree with Jane and her cohorts about one thing; radical Islam is a dangerous thing. It is steeped in ignorance, illiteracy, anger and envy. Envy at Western Society for being technologically & financially superior.

In those nations where radical Islam has a foothold, the per capita income is nil as is the rate of literacy and education. Health care is nonexistent and infant/maternal death rate is ridiculously high. Those in power are well aware of this and that is how they maintain power through lies and manipulation. Osama Bin Laden came from extreme wealth but the only way he could have a following was to "turn from his wealth" and reach out to those poor & ignorant bastards that would follow his lead.

So yes, it would be foolish to not secure our borders and be wary of those who would harm us. It is foolishness to search old white ladies in an airport but not young Muslim/Arabic men. That is not bigotry but common sense.

However, to indict an ENTIRE group of people over the evil of a not-so-small minority is not what Americans are about. And for the fools on this board who would advocate murdering the innocent because of their hate for Arabic/Muslim people, you are just that, FOOLS.

Jane, Proletariat, RW and anyone else like y'all, your use of certain websites and talk-show hosts' monologues do not solidify your premise that ALL Muslims/Arabs are to be hated and unmercifully deported and/or butchered.

I would also chastise those who would believe every talking point of the Left. Let not your desire for justice and equality blind you to the very real fact that there are dangers in the world and it is not wrong to want to shore up our borders. Wanting to protect ourselves doesn't necessarily make us bigots or racists. Also, to call people names just because they think differently than you is just as wrong as RW having the hots for someone by calling them 'qu**r'. And I'm sure no one in their right mind would want to be compared to him.

I understand that there will always be fools on this board ranting and raving about how 'right' they are about geo-politics and society as a whole.

It would be nice though to have a cogent debate without someone always saying that an entire group of people are horrible and should be done away with.

My electrician, told me he has secret information that Obama is a Muslim. He also asked me if I was Jewish (I'm not), when I asked him how much the job would cost. He declares himself a born -again Christian. I imagine he would get along well with a many of the ignorant posters here. He helped convince me of the absurdity of these stupid arguements. I will make my vote based on the candidates postions not a bunch of bigots hateful lies.

By the way I visited Uzbekistan in 1999 and was only about a few hours drive to Afganistan. I was treated very nicely by many Muslims, and observed Muslims enjoying Christmas dinner with their Christian neighbors. To paint all Muslims with a broad brush is very damaging.

Only someone with no sense of politics could ever agree that Palin won last night's debate. Moreover, and I'm no huge fan of Obama, but there is no credible evidence to suggest that he is Muslim and the quotes taken out of his book were taken out of context. Perhaps if someone actually read the book instead of cutting and pasting out of some moronic email they received they might see that.
Out of the 600,000 people who live here, 300 Muslims get together and everyone goes crazy? Are y'all serious?
