Congressional candidates Linda Ketner (left) and Rep. Henry Brown (right) continue a heated conversation after the televised debate ended Wednesday night, Oct. 1. Moderators were Post and Courier reporter Robert Behre (second from left) and Mark Quinn of ETV.

Reader poll

Who do you think won Wednesday's First Congressional District debate?

  • Henry Brown 24% 77 votes
  • Linda Ketner 75% 243 votes

320 total votes.

BEAUFORT — Democrat Linda Ketner and Republican incumbent Republican Henry Brown sparred over economics, energy and health care for nearly an hour Wednesday night. But the real fireworks started during an end of broadcast feud over a forest fire.

"Be a real Southern lady and tell the truth," Brown said about a TV ad Ketner is running against him.

"There is nothing in that ad that wasn't taken directly from a newspaper," Ketner answered back, defending her ad about a 2004 controlled fire Brown let get out of hand, running into the Francis Marion National Forest.

The squabble continued for 15 minutes after the SCETV cameras were turned off.

"You're not making any friends by running that ad," Brown told Ketner. "My friends, they know that story. They feel you don't have a record to run on so you're trying to destroy me. ... I'd like you to take it down, or we'll have to respond. There's a lot of stuff out there about you, and we don't want this to be a personal issue."

Ketner said all the assertions in her campaign ad were taken from newspapers and a federal report. She said she would review the facts and correct any errors she finds.

"I will go back, not because you threatened me, because I don't find that very attractive," she said.

Brown also cited a video clip of Ketner on YouTube in which she apparently was mimicking Brown and asserting that he was campaigning solely on his long marriage and his constituent service. Ketner said she had no idea of what he was talking about.

"Are you sure it's coming from my campaign?" she asked. "If it is, then there's going to be some firing going on."

"I don't like talking about my opponent, and I apologize for being so curt with you tonight," Brown said, adding that he "took a liking" to Ketner when he first met her in the early 1990s, as she was pushing a housing bill in the Legislature, where Brown served.

"I did to you too," Ketner said. "You were one of the first Republican supporters."

The sparring highlighted the high-stakes race for the 1st Congressional District, where Ketner, a first-time political candidate, is seeking a seat that's been continually in Republican hands for nearly three decades. Brown is seeking a fifth term.

On camera, Brown also downplayed Ketner's boasts of showing leadership in Washington during crisis moments such as the failed Wall Street cash restoration debate this week.

"If Nancy Pelosi or Jim Clyburn couldn't provide the leadership ... I don't think a freshman congressman could," Brown said, adding "Miss Ketner, you couldn't deliver either."

Ketner kept to her theme that it's time for an outsider to bring new energy to Washington. "The people are justifiably angry and mistrustful of government," she said, "and they should be. Congress has let us down."

Wednesday's debate, aired by S.C. ETV, was held in Beaufort — an hour's drive outside the 1st District lines — so that it could take place inside ETV's designated "Lowcountry" studio here.

The two did find areas to agree on, especially on the troop surge that has led to a calm period in Iraq.

Brown also defended his support of the Wall Street recovery bill. "It's not Wall Street that took that big hit; it was Main Street," he said. "It was people who had 401(k)s, who had retirement funds."

Ketner disagreed.

"Yes we are bailing out Wall Street," she said, "but we are bailing out Wall Street to save our own hides."

Henry Brown is a condescending gas-bag and mean-spirited old man. His nose has been up the White House's and GOP leadership's respective butts for so long that he's suffering from oxygen deprivation.

He could care less about health care for seniors and children. I'd like to see him realize he's a member of one these two demographics and acts like he's part of the other.

He burns up twenty acres in the Francis Marion Nat'l Forest and it's Ketner's fault?

Puh-leeze!

I had never seen Brown either in person or on tv until this debate. Now I've seen more than enough.
He appears to be a disgusting, pompous bully who takes personal offense that anyone would dare run against him or be critical of his job performance.
In fact, that's how our political system is supposed to work.Too bad we don't have a variety of good candidates offer for every office each and every election.Incumbency shouldn't guarantee a job for life.
I will be voting for Ketner.

I also have emailed him several time about this and never even get a response. So unless your blue haired old he won't care. Time for him to go. But I'm going to look at Ketner's position on immigration too. She does run some stupid ads. I do like the "burning" ad that pissed him off. Seems like it was on cue from what I read in the papers too.

I do think Ketner should stop running those forest fire ads...she should stop those and run ones about Kiawah land development! As much as I don't want another democrat in Congress, I don't want to give Brown the opportunity for a third strike. His ad is the one that makes me sick when he says things like "we need more people like him". If we had more people like him we wouldn't have any lowcountry left to enjoy. It's sad that a REAL republican with TRUE values wasn't able to beat him in the primaries.

People, change is good, Brown is looking to keep his career, but remember, holding office is not suppose to be a career. Its a civic duty, as our founding fathers laid it out to be. I am not saying I support Ketner, she is a bit of a religious nut, but we can give her 1 term and fire her ass. What we can not afford is Brown, we do not need another Strom.....

Mouth of the south knee jerk nazi statement. It's no wonder you get what you choose and then gripe about it to high heaven.

Henry Brown:

Voted against the new GI Bill
Voted for the biggest bill to heaped upon the backs of the American workers. Count the $592 billion already sent to ease the financial burden with this $700 billion boondoggle and you get some big numbers and the fun hasn't even started yet. The taxes will be small compared to your devalued dollar and loss of purchasing power amongst other things over the long term. You know there are an est. $62 trillion in derivatives floating out there? It would make this pale in comparison if that portion went boom. National security? Try using a dollar that's worth nothing overseas. It's been the standard, now it's fighting for life as the buffoons in congress bow to their paymasters.

Let them declare bankruptcy on Wall Street. It would send a signal that the free market does work, albeit with some short term pain. No, No the gubmint must step in and prop up the Wall Street folks to prove they are needed and cure any ill. They propped up the Wall Street folks before the big crash. Then FDR took over from Hoover and what? The depression lasted how long? Then a another gubmint sponsored recession in '37-'39. So yeah, they've done us well and people here want more govt. None of you "I'm voting for Brown because he's the only choice" have the backbone to vote his butt outta office. All yap and no action, just maintain the staus quo. No wonder people like ol' Henry stay entrenched so long.

That being said it's much easier to make references to nazis, yeah that maybe might religious thingy is real important when ol' Henry and the rest of the thugs on the Hill are robbing you blind and bleeding you slowly and yet people like Mouth continue to find reasons to vote for idiots like Brown, the horse's backside. If they would pay attention instead of running their jaws, something might get done. Condescending old windbag. He doesn't have my vote.

I think Henry Brown did a great job in the debate. He spoke well on all the issues and really stuck it to Ketner. He showed SC that she is ignorant in so many ways. I was also proud that he called her out about being a liar (on her past and her ads). My favorite part was when she tried to make him look bad about his campaign contributions and he pointed out that she held stock in or had contributions from the same companies. Good job Henry. I just wish he would have called her out about being a flaming liberal lesbian. But then that would not be politically correct (extreme sarcasm). I think its clear now who is most qualified to lead the First District. Go Brown!!!

Old glory: Further, religion... have no place in politics.

Check the founding fathers declarations, heck, check the founding charters of each of the states of this nation. Your comment is as erroneous as it is assinign. Check your history. Prior to a bunch of politically correct hate mongers God was at the forfront of this government. Unfortunately revisionist historians and people who are either too lazy or support lies, distort our national heritage.

The only hope we have to save this country is a national revival where people actually develop a relationship with Jesus instead of people just highjacking His name.

I know this sounds rough and I apologize, but I am tired of people saying God has no place in politics and let's be honest, old glory wasn't talking about religion but Christ.

Thomas,

I honestly think that the majority of folks (yes, I said majority) go into the voting booths and select "Republican" or "Democrat". They were raised one way or the other and, therefore, listen to only that one point of view as they get older, hence, end up voting for what they've been taught/seen/believed all their life.

Hopefully this "bailout" woke people up soon enough to have them actually research and select their candidate on credentials that appeal to them instead of simply voting for a party.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

Get rid of Parties...let it be an American vs. an American at the debates.

This is a tough one. I initially thought the decision would be easy because I thought Ketner was a social conservative and fiscally liberal. Interestingly, although she does come across as a bible beater (as one commentor mentioned), she's actually pro-choice. (For other stances, check out http://www.vote-smart.org/npat.php?ca...) I'm not sure how she reconciles being so into religion but pro-choice, but at least it shows she's a rational thinker and not a blind zealot.

On the other hand, she is fiscally liberal, which is not what this country needs. (For an insightful commentary on the "bailout" see http://www.mises.org/story/3131) If you disagree, I challenge you to get your information regarding the costs and benefits of the supposed bailout from an economist rather than a politician, and see if you still think it makes sense.

Ultimately, though, I'm having trouble getting past Brown's demeanor. He's a condescending bully who uses rhetorical tactics to give the impression that he's made a valid point when he's lost.

Gotta give the edge to Ketner.

Why is it so hard for people to understand that one can be religious and still feel that a woman has a right to make her own decisions about her body? I have known plenty of Episcopal, Presbyterian, Congregational, Methodist, Lutheran, and yes, even Catholics who are both devoted to their God and a woman's right to choose. So please don't assume that Ketner being pro-choice prevents her from being Christian--it in no way does, despite what the zealots may think.

SC ranks 26th of the 50 states in education:
http://www.morganquitno.com/edrank.htm

SC ranks 39th in income, 5th highest in unemployment, 30th in healthcare: http://www.statemaster.com/red/state/...

We also rank 10th highest living in poverty, 10th highest in children living in poverty, and 4th highest in senior citizens living in poverty.

"Why would we ever want to change our brilliant place in this country?" asks ReasonSpeaks.

Because "our brilliant place" is scraping the bottom of barrel.

To say "lefties" are crazy? I think you must be, due to your ignorance of these facts.

I do understand that some people are both Christian and pro-choice. However, in order to be comfortable with that, you have to either believe that a) life does not begin at conception (which is at odds with most Christian doctrines), or b) elective abortion is, in fact, murder, but it is justifiable. While some might gasp at the acceptance of justifiable murder, those who accept the death penalty or George Bush's war in Iraq clearly promote it.

Ketner may very well believe in god and go to church and be pro-choice. You are correct that the error is mine in assuming that because she mentions god and religion in her ads that she would automatically be pro-life.

I don't think this is a left or right thing. I think it is agreed that most incumbents need to be voted out. Maybe not all of them, but those that have not represent the people or the country. I for one have not been taught to vote a straight ticket. It is voting for the best person for the job. Not all Democrats are evil. I don't believe in over abused social programs or taxing the hell out of people or corporations. Some of you tend to get caught up in this Left or Right fight. This country has a very important decision to make soon and I think many people are voting just to be stylish. I am voting for a proven leader with combat experience and the experience to lead this country and make tough decisions. Not some one with 140 days experience and who voted present 130 times sat on the fence and did not make decisions.

Gay rights, abortion have no action in this years election and are about as significant as a fart in a hurricane. In true Goldwater conservative fashion, abortion is a women's choice. It was hijacked somewhere along the line and has absolutely no play in any election I vote in. Those two issues are used as smoke screens to obfuscate real issues that affect us all on a daily basis. They are used by both sides.

Agreed.

Get rid of all the ones that have more than 6 years tenure. Keep the ones with less than 6 years in so they can "guide" the "1st graders" around the school (Washington) for the first time.

The folks with less than 6 years are like middle school kids...they WANT to be in High School, but will respect it more and hopefully do right when they see all the High School kids ahead of them get expelled.

IMO.

Brown's reputation as a legislator isn't very high and if you look at his record, you will see he rarely introduces or pushs legislation and is not a player.

Ketner is absolutely right. If you listen to the underlying message in the video, the world IS changing and South Carolina had better realize that. Education, job growth and a business friendly environment are the big issues and you need someone in DC that understands that.

I meant that Linda spent weeks helping people devastated by Katrina reclaim their homes - and that's just one small example of her commitment to improving lives. And yes, I have seen photos of Linda with shovel in hand and covered head to toe in mud helping those who were devastated by the hurricane. She works hard. I also know that she started and ran a food pantry for those returning to the hardest hit areas.

She doesn't wear these accomplishments on her sleeve nor does she often take credit for her contributions to local charities, preferring to be listed as "Anonymous." Yes, it's true absolute fact all of it. Linda is a wonderful person of extraordinary character. Perhaps she didn't literally dig homes out of the mud I apologize - but I know she is a committed humanitarian, with a very strong work ethic.

I understand - it's easy to be cynical. But Linda is very genuine and worth the risk. Can you think of one boast for Henry Brown after multiple terms in office? Seriously, I would love to know. I have not met anyone who can point to any achievement of significance.

For everybody that wants the truth PLEASE research the real Linda Ketner on the issues...

Most of the comments on the P&C are from Ketner employees trying to confuse all the voters out there. We simply cannot trust Ketner. She is trying to hide from her positions, her party and her homosexual lifestyle and pretend she is above it all and because she has never been elected to any position at any level of elected office she thinks that she can just spend millions of her daddy's money with endless commercials that do nothing but lie and smear (the latest figures are that Ketner has already spent over $1.5 million)...

If you doubt me just research the following positions:

Ketner has stated that she is in favor of abortion on demand even in the last term of pregnancy.

Ketner has stated that she supports gay marriage with full legal rights just as regular married couples.

Ketner has stated that she is in favor of ILLEGAL immigrants to "have a path to US citizenship"

Ketner has stated that she is against our gun rights provided under the 2nd amendment

And of course Ketner has stated she supports the increase in many taxes including small business and corporate taxes.

While I agree that Henry Brown is not perfect, he has a proven track record of helping our community and getting funding to the coast and does a good job representing the majority of the Districts traditional values...Brown has earned the right to be reelected by us if for no other reason if we don't vote for Brown every citizen in the 1st District will be horrified when the "real" Linda Ketner shows her face on Nov. 5th.

Don't believe her website, don't believe her commercials, be an educated voter and check it out for yourself by searching for Ketners answers on the survey at www.votesmart.org

turtleman: the source you cite defeats your argument. It's apparent you will not for Ketner, and that's your right, but it is NOT your right to publicly lie about a candidate. And if you're going to do that anyway, at least find a source that supports your lies. Because the one you list does not.

On taxes: her survey response was "slightly increase" corporate taxes (which were continually lessened over the last eight years) - that is not applicable to small businesses, as you infer.
On gun rights: the survey makes no such reference to any restrictions. You made that up.
On illegal immigrants: yes, she responded that temporary work visas could be allowed, and that illegal immigrants could apply for citizenship - same thing the Bush Adminstration requested. Your quotation, though, is of the survey question - that is not a quote from Ketner herself.
Supports gay marriage: yes, she supports that. At least you got one right, and without any false insinuations.
On abortion: her response was "should be legal" - her response was not "even in the last term" as you attempt to infer.

You are attempting to do what many republican officials and supporters continue to do: mislead the public by stretching the truth, and even lying outright.

The public has had enough of that. That's why we're voting for Ketner and not the stretching/lying Henry Brown.

You seem to have all the answers why don't you tell Ketner to put the positions you stated on her website because the public cannot find those positions anywhere. And why is she hiding the fact that she is a Democrat? Why has Sen. Hollings or Reps Clyburn or Spratt endorsed her? Because they know who she really is, thats why.

Why is Ketner hinding her positions that she knows the public in SC won't find appealing? Any smart answers for that?

I'll tell you why, because she thinks she can spend all of her daddy's money to try and fool the people until election day. Sorry some of us have seen through her lies.

She is nothing more than a lying, California style, liberal, lesbian.

DON"T BELIEVE KETNER SHE CAN"T BE TRUSTED.

Actually, turtleman, those positions ARE stated on her website. Just go there (www.lindaketner.com) and click on "issues" - in fact, there are many more details on those positions on the website.

There's no hiding of anything. It's all right there - and that's my smart answer to your dumb question.

As for using her daddy's money? Why are some folks so eager to make that false statement? Ketner has been quite successful all by herself. She's president of the company she herself founded, teaches at the College of Charleston, and has won award after award after award for her role in our community.

She didn't need any of daddy's dollars to do her campaign, either. In fact, she's raised over a million dollars in donations from voters who are sick of Henry Brown.

So please please please tell me about these lies you continue to claim. So far in our communication, the only lies I see are coming from you.

You must be one of Ketners high priced staff because I see her getting money from all kinds of gay rights organizations from Los Angeles and New York City and I see writing herself checks for hundreds of thousands of dollars but I'm not sure where you see her success...without her daddy's money she wouldn't have a snowballs chance in hell in this District and you know it.

And I am still waiting for you to tell me where on the issues page it says anything about abortion, gay marriage, guns or illegal immigration...I have been to the website and I can find a tab marked "arts" but nothing on the mainstream social issues that folks in South Carolina hold to be important...maybe you are looking at a different Linda Ketner website but the one I searched has nothing about social issues hmmm I wonder why? I know because she is totally the opposite of most voters in the first District so Ketner has just decided that we don't get to know about those positions.

I and many other voters continue to wait to see when Ketner will tell us the truth on her positions on the issues...but I won't hold my breath because she will try to deceive the public right up until election day hoping that we don't find her out to be the California style liberal that she really is...

And you claim I'm trying to cover the truth? I'm telling you how to VERIFY the truth. (well, not you - I don't care what you think, but if anyone else bothering to read this wants to know the truth...)

At the same time, you are trying to cover up the fact that Henry Brown continues to cover up his real actions. He claims to be pro-veteran, but actually - and repeatedly - votes against bills that are for veterans. Just go to the same website you unsuccessfully tried to use against Ketner. www.votesmart.org

Look up what the real veteran's associations have to say about Henry. Disabled Veterans Association, for example - they gave Brown rankings of ZERO three years in a row, and because he's voted against veterans benefits time and time again. Yet, Henry tries to claim he's a veteran's best friend.

He only says that garbage to try to get re-elected. It won't work this time.

I'm giving up on this trading of barbs with you, turtleboy. I've got much much much better things to do than to waste my time on you.

As a last advice, be prepped for November. You and Henry can share a drink, talk about old times...
