IslandGrill & Bar is undoubtedly one of James Island's oldest and most beloved bars.
For almost two decades, the inconspicuous, little watering hole along Folly Road has been offering cold drinks, its locally famous "build-your-own" burgers and, of course, the primary house specialty - karaoke.
My first experience at the Island - and with karaoke - was over a decade ago, where every Thursday, a group of friends would meet to enjoy trying to outdo each other in choosing cheesy songs to sing.
Years later, the Island still offers the best (and the worst, but it's all in good fun) amateur singers every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. In fact, on Fridays, "Uncomfortable Don," formerly of 96 Wave fame, hosts karaoke with radio buddy "Stupid Mike" Fili.
The Island has always struck me as one big comfortable living room. The bar is no-frills, and its familiar, casual atmosphere is perhaps its greatest quality. Much of the staff has been there for the better part of the Island's existence. Familiar indeed.
James Island residents have long known what a treat they have in the Island Grill & Bar. Newcomers couldn't go wrong in finding out for themselves.
