COLUMBIA — A South Carolina man set to die Friday for killing a store clerk has been granted a stay of execution from the U.S. Supreme Court.

Chief Justice John Roberts signed the stay Tuesday, giving Freddie E. Owens' attorney time to prepare an appeal to the high court. The stay does not say whether the court will agree to hear the case.

Owens, 30, has been sentenced to death three times for killing Greenville clerk Irene Grainger Graves during a holdup in 1997. His first two sentences were overturned.

I need more information on this, why did they have a problem with this case is what I want to know. Because his lawyer was not ready is not a good one.

I wish I knew....he's the same piece of garbage that killed another inmate, admittedly, by strangling him with a sheet. I can't imagine what else he can do to warrant the death penalty. I hope another inmate simply does the same to him, and it'll save the state a lot of time, money, and energy.

Let's see here-this guy Owens not only killed the store clerk in '97, but a few hours after his first conviction he killed a 29 year old by strangling him with a bed sheet and sticking a frikin' pen up his nose into his brain. Officials also say he had stomp marks on his chest and neck! At his hearing, he took the stand and stated he does not live for society, but for himself. He also stated that if he were to get out of prison and kill every whitey he saw, there would be nothing wrong with that. The reason he gets this stay is because his lawyer-a pos in his own right-claims the trial judge erred when he allowed Owens' 28 violations while in prison. wtf?
BTW-the man he killed in prison, Christopher Lee, was serving a little time for TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS! Why was he even put in the same cell as this animal? Is this Owens the kind of guy who deserves every benefit of the doubt from our justice system? Is this justice at all? C'mon judge Roberts-this is ludicrous!

There were no stays of execution for his victims. Give him equal rights.

ironhorse (and Early for thinking it's funny), YOU'RE AN IDIOT, and you proved it quite effectively. Convicts can't vote, and will they EXECUTE him or EXECUTION him? Learn the difference between a noun and a verb. You're part of the reason everyone thinks the South is so backwards.

No idiot, my parents are educated professionals unlike yours who apparently ARE brother and sister (since that's the 1st thing you reached for. A little sensitive about it are you?) and probably had to eat dirt to survive. They're the ones the Sandlapper song was written about. Once again, you've proven my point--YOU'RE AN IDIOT!!!!!!!!!
And RW, of course you don't care what anybody else thinks. Better to live in ignorance and be comfortable. As far as being criminals' best friend, you don't know what my stance on that situation is. If you'd like to know, ask. Don't assume. You know what that makes you.
